Hogwarts House Battles + September 💫 TBR

So, you may have seen my post last week with my TBR for September & Reading Rivalry. Well it is 3 days into September and I decided to leave the Reading Rivalry groups. This is mainly because the people running things were so damn pushy. I joined the group for the reading only but was pushed to answer questions and post daily instagram posts (or weekly reviews) and if you didn’t comment or post then you would get tagged in posts with reminders.. Which even after 3 days was just getting bloody irritating. I don’t mind doing a monthly insta challenge but I don’t like being pushed to post if I don’t feel like it and I prefer ones that have challenges anyone can do. This challenge was very US based from what I could tell. Day 2s challenge being ‘Labour Day’, which is COMPLETELY irrelevant to me. For one, it is not labour day here in Australia and 2 basically no one in Australia (myself included) gives a damn about Labour Day. It means nothing to us besides a day off work/school. So why would I make a post about it?
So anyways, I just had an issue with how things were run on that group and made the decision just to leave it as it wasn’t worth the irritation.

Now, onto the actual TBR! After posting my last TBR I decided to join the Hogwarts House Battles, so here is my TBR for that!

Alchemy – New Forms – Read a recommendation from a friend

I was recommended this one a while back and I was going to use it for a similar challenge for the NEWTs but didn’t get to it. So I’m putting it on this TBR instead! I have started this one and am about 50 pages in and I’m intrigued so far.

Apparition – Teleportation – Only Read this book in public

This challenge I will be skipping as I don’t read any books in public except for the odd few pages when waiting at the Drs.

Arithmancy – Numbers – Read a book with a number in the title

The Woods: Vol 3 has the number 3 in the title. It’s also the next volume I need to read and I’m keen to continue.

Astronomy – Reading under the stars – Only read this book at Night

I haven’t chosen a specific book for this one but I will likely just pick up a graphic novel or novella that I can finish in one sitting at night.

Care of Magical Creatures – The Beasts – Read a book with an animal on the cover

Appointment with Death has a snake on the cover, so it fits. It’s also the next book in the Hercule Poirot series that I need to read!

Charms – Something New & Unexpected – Read a “New-To-You” Book

Ford this one basically what I did was went onto Scribd, into the audiobook section and looked at the recommendation until I found a cover hat I hadn’t seen before. I then looked up the genre on Goodreads, mainly to make sure it wasn’t romance heavy & also checked it wasn’t a sequel. And this is what I found, which actually sounds right up my alley. It’s a Historical Fiction set during WWII which it the part of Historical Fiction I gravitate towards.

Defence Against the Dark Arts – Can’t Last – Read a book you previously put down

Furyborn I started to read physically just after it came out. I was trying to get out of a reading slump at the time and was told by a few people that it was pretty slow going, so I decided to put it down. A slow book didn’t sound like the best idea for a slump. So I’m going to give it another go but this time via audiobook.

Divination – The Future – Read a predicted 5 star read

The Devil’s Thief is the second book to The Last Magician which I really enjoyed! I just still haven’t gotten to The Devil’s Thief yet! I haven’t decided whether I will read this physically or on audiobook. I want to read it physically but it is huge and kinda intimidating. I also originally read book 1 on audiobook, so I’m indecisive on whether I should audiobook or physically read it!

Flying – Fly High – Read your most anticipated book

At the moment this is the book that I’m super keen to get into, so I’m considering it my most anticipated.

Herbology – Caring – Read a book that means a lot to you

I haven’t chosen a book for this one specifically as I don’t know if I’ll do the challenge. Of course I would reread Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for this challenge but I only just finished another reread of the whole series this morning, so if I have time I might do it but it won’t be top priority.

History of Magic – Historical – Read a book from another generation

Hercule Poirot’s Christmas is well and truly from another generation considering it was published in 1938. This is also the next book after Appointment with Death in the series!

Muggle Studies – Blending In – Read a hyped book

The Shades of London series in general is super hyped and I’ve been meaning to read this one for ages! So I thought it was time to add this one to a TBR!

Potions – Mixing – Read a genre you wouldn’t usually pick up

I haven’t chosen a book for this one as I have felt a little slumpy lately, so at the moment I don’t think it’s the best idea to be picking up something I wouldn’t usually and risking making the slump worse. If later in the month I feel like it I might choose something but for now I’m not.

Study of Ancient Runes – Ancients – Read a classic novel

I don’t generally read classics as they usually aren’t genres I’m interested in or are very romance heavy, so I haven’t picked anything for this one.

Transfiguration – Change – Read the Last Book You Bought

As of right now the last book I bought was a Harry Potter Box Set which is strictly for display only, so I will not be reading that one. I will basically choose a book for this one if I buy something else between now & the end of the month.

The rest of my September TBR!

Okay, so I have put the covers for the two Year Book Editions of The Woods just to display that I want to finish all the issues that are currently out rather than putting all of the volume covers.
House of Salt and Sorrows I saw on Scribd yesterday on Audiobook! I’ve been seeing it around and the cover is gorgeous, so I want to pick it up!
Spin the Dawn is also on audiobook on scribd. I do own it physically but I feel like picking up the audiobook at the moment. But will see what happens throughout the month!
Kriss is a Graphic Novel eARC that I need to get to and I’m super keen to jump in!
We are Blood and Thunder is a review copy I got from Bloomsbury and I really need to get to it! Just haven’t had the chance yet. So I’m keen to get into it.

Well that is all of the books currently on my TBR!
What are you most looking forward to in September?!

TBR Jar ReadAThon 💫 Round #7 Announcement!

Dates: 6th – 15th of September, 2019

How it works

This ReadAThon is pretty simple. First, pick a goal. I will be aiming for 7 books, but you can choose as many or as little books as you wish.
Next, grab a jar, or cup, or hat, it really doesn’t matter. Something you can put names into.
For the next step, you can do this one a few ways.
Option 1 is to put all the books on your TBR (physical, eBook, audiobook, whatever you wish) into a hat.
Option 2, you can pick some of the books you are most looking forward to and put them in a hat. Or you can also put the books that fit another challenge/ReadAThon you’re participating in and put them in the jar
Option 3, (this is what I will be doing), get a 2nd jar, in 1 jar put all the physical & eBooks books on your TBR into it and in the 2nd jar put all the audiobooks on your TBR.
Lastly, pick a name out of the jar and read that book, then pick another name and read that book and continue until you either hit your goal or run out of time in the ReadAThon.

Extra Info

You can choose to pull the number of names you choose for your goal out of the jar prior to the ReadAThon or pull them out as you go.

Use the hashtag #TBRJarRAT so I can see what you’re up to (also if it is on Twitter or Instagram then you can tag the @TBRJarRAT page too.

So, some of you may have a few books from the same series still on your TBR. Join the club. So if this is the case, you can either choose to only put the 1st book (or the book you are up to) in the TBR jar OR you can put it in as the full series. So if you pick up that name, then you have to try and read all the books from that series that you have on your shelf.
This ReadAThon is very customisable, so do whatever fits you.

Beat the Bingo ReadAThon TBR!

So, I’ve been extremely inactive on my blog lately. Between Biannual Bibliothon, MedievalAThon & The Reading Rush I have been super busy & next month is probably going to be the same. I will be participating in NEWTs Edition of Magical ReadAThon (Month long), Beat the Bingo ReadAThon (Month long) & the Harry Potter Edition of Fantasy JourneyAThon (10th – 19th)!

Beat the Bingo ReadAThon is taking place over in the Facebook Group The YA Book Nerds which I run. You can join the group HERE!

I have chosen books for all the challenges except for the ‘Previous YA Book Nerds BOTM’ because as the organiser of the group I have read all the Group Books as I was the one that choose them & made the discussion questions. So I’ve just left this as a free choice for myself.

Read a book with a Male MC

Reread a Favourite

Read a book with a blue cover

Listen to an Audiobook

Read a fantasy book

Read a book with a plant on the cover

Read a Sci-Fi

Read a Graphic Novel

Read a book with multiple POV

Read a book under 250 pages

Read a Diverse Book

Read a book with gold on the cover

Read the Group Book

Read a Dystopian Book

Read a book set in the future

Read a book with red on the cover

Read a mystery book

Read a book by an Author of colour

Read an Own Voices book

Read a 2019 release

Read a book over 300 pages

Read a Historical Book

Read a book with yellow on the cover

Read a Middle Grade book

My TBR is a bit ambitious but I tried to choose a decent amount of Graphic Novels & Audiobooks! There are 14 books, 7 Audiobooks & 3 Graphic Novels! So fingers crossed I can complete as many as possible!

Magical ReadAThon FAQ

My Career Goals!

So I have chosen to strive to be a Magizoologist for this years Magical ReadAThon.

Magizoologist Fact Sheet – Created by Book Roast on YouTube

So as you can see the OWLs that are required for Magizoologist are: Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Herbology & Potions.

My TBR!

So I will be concentrating on the 4 subjects required for Magizoologist but I have chosen a book for each of the 12 subjects. If I have time I will pick up as many as I can but my priority will definitely be the 4 subjects for Magizoologist!

Care of Magical Creatures – Land animal on the cover

Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin (aerial view of a someone riding a motorbike with a wolf shadow coming from the bike)

This one is fairly self explanatory. There is a wolf on the cover, which is a land animal.

Charms – Age Line: Read an adult work

The Bedlam Stacks by Natasha Pulley

This is an Adult Historical Fiction. I absolutely love this cover and I picked it up on a whim when I was out shopping with a mate. I haven’t read what it’s about but I hope I love it!

Herbology – Plant on the cover

The Song Rising by Samantha Shannon (Orange Flower in top middle of book)

I have been meaning to read this for AGES! I read The Bone Season & The Mime Order maybe 2 years ago, maybe longer and I picked a copy of this one up straight away but never actually read it. I think i will definitely need to read an overview of Book 1 & 2 before starting this one.

Potions – Next Ingredient: Sequel

This Cruel Design by Emily Suvada

This is book 2 to This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada. I absolutely loved This Mortal Coil so I can’t wait to read this book!

Ancient Runes – Retelling

This Monstrous Thing by Mackenzi Lee

This is a Frankenstein retelling. So fits the challenge perfectly. I have been wanting to read another book by Mackenzi Lee as I absolutely love the Montague Siblings series.

Arithmancy – Work written by more than one author

The Wicked + The Divine: Vol 7: Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Matt Wilson & Clayton Cowles

This has 4 contributors so it’s perfect for this challenge. I have been making my way through this series and I am really enjoying it. The artwork is absolutely gorgeous!

Astronomy – “Star” in the title

Ruin of Stars by Linsey Miller

This is pretty self explanatory. Ruin of STARs is the second book to Mask of Shadows which I read and enjoyed last year.

Defence of Magical Creatures – Land animal on the cover

A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir

I’m cheating slightly as the first letter is A, but I don’t have anything else that fits. So I’m using it!

Divination – Set in the future

Dry by Neal Shusterman & Jarrod Shusterman

This was recommended to me when I asked in a Facebook Group for books set in the future. I can’t find anywhere in the description if this is set in the future so I hope that is correct.

History of Magic – Published at least 10 years ago

Murder in the Mesopotamia by Agatha Christie

This was published in 1936, so definitely more than 10 years old! I have been making my way through the Hercule Poirot series and this is the next book I’m up to.

Muggle Studies – Contemporary

Dear Martin by Nic Stone

This has been on my TBR for ages, so I’m glad to be finally getting to it hopefully.

Transfiguration – Sprayed Edges OR red cover

Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa (Black Background, Silver Fox like mask with a red swirl and red silhouette of asian landscape behind mask)

Another self explanatory one, the cover has red on it. I’ve been meaning to read more by this author as I read The Iron King a while ago and really enjoyed it.

Let’s Chat!
