Graphic Novel Mash Up 📚 Spoiler Free Reviews

The Avant-Guards: Vol 2 & Down to the Wire

Title: The Avant-Guards: Vol 2 & The Avant-Guards: Down to the Wire
Series: The Avant-Guards
Author: Carly Usdin & Noah Hayes
Genre: YA LGBT
Publication Date: Feb 18th, 2020 & Nov 12th, 2020
Pages: 112
Publishers: BOOM! Box
Rating:

5 Stars

This graphic Novel series is INCREDIBLE! It’s so much fun but also touches on the importance of friendship & the natural struggles that can come with that.
This one also has amazing rep! The Avant-Guards features a Trans Woman, a Non-Binary Person & a Sapphic relationship! *Chefs kiss*
I really hope they expand this series. The story kind of wrapped up in Down to the Wire but there could easily be more to this and I would be totally here for it!

Alice: From Dream to Dream

Title: Alice: From Dream to Dream
Author: Giulio Macaione, Giulia Adragna & Adapted to English by Jackie Ball
Genre: YA Fantasy
Publication Date: Oct 2nd, 2018
Pages: 144
Publishers: BOOM! Box
Rating:

4.5 Stars
Alice: From Dream to Dream Cover

Alice was a beautiful story that featured the importance of family & friendship. It was a very impactful read while also having some action & suspense. The fantasy aspect just took it up a notch for me. I found it fascinating but would also love to know more about the world itself. Was her ability somewhat normal? Do other people have abilities? Or is Alice the only one? I’m curious about the world for sure. Alice was also adapted to English which was a fun surprise. I do try and make an effort to read adaptations but I find most of the popular ones just aren’t a genre/story I would read. Which makes it hard but this one is definitely worth the read!

Eat, and Love Yourself

Title: Eat, and Love Yourself
Author: Sweeney Boo & Lilian Klepakowsky
Genre: YA Magical Realism
Publication Date: Apr 21st, 2020
Pages: 160
Publishers: BOOM! Box
Rating:

3.5 Stars

This one left me a little underwhelmed. The fantasy element was interesting but definitely not explained in the slightest. I also felt like at times the story was a little all over the place. It was very disjointed at times which made it a little hard to follow.
While I personally have never experienced an eating disorder and can’t directly comment on that rep I do feel like it could have ended a lot better. It ended very abruptly with no resolution. I feel like it might have been more impactful to see Mindy overcoming her struggles with eating disorders & her journey to loving herself. That’s just not what we got though. It ended with her saying she will do better but that was it.
There are definitely people out there enjoying it and I’ve seen positive feedback regarding the rep from people who have gone through a similar experience. However, for me it just didn’t quite hit the mark.

The Basics

For this ReadAThon all you have to do is roll 2 dice and make your way around the board earning or losing points based on the spaces you land on and what is required for each space. Pretty simple but I have added some fun elements like quizzes & bonus challenges throughout!

Also, if you roll a double when making your way around the board you simply roll again. Roll doubles, move your marker, roll again and then complete the challenge in that space. This is the same as in the actual game to keep it easy.

Different types of spaces

Brown Cover Property Space

Property spaces

All you have to do when you land on one of these is Read a book that fits the challenge and once you do you Earn the specified points & then take your next roll.
I have tried to keep the challenges broad but if you simply do not have a book that fits the challenge you can read something that is kinda similar but doesn’t quite fit and still earn full points or read something that is the complete opposite. Get creative with it. As long as you can justify the book you chose then you can earn the points.
If you land on the same property space twice throughout the month you can either complete the challenge again and earn more points OR skip and roll again but not earn any points.

Treasure Chest Space

Treasure Chest Spaces!

These replace the Community Chest spaces on a normal Monopoly board. For Treasure Chest you will need to complete a Quiz. You can always find the Quizzes linked in our Twitter Bio.
The Treasure Chest Quiz will result in you receiving a Treasure Chest Card where you could earn or lose points depending on which you get. If you land on this square more than once you will need to retake the test to receive another card but for the second time you must answer the quiz questions the opposite of what you first answered them so that you can discover a new card.

Adventure Space

Adventure

When you land on the space you must head over to the Adventure Map. Start at Haroyell on the map and chose a path at random. When you reach the end of that path you will need to complete the corresponding challenge to earn the 100 points for this space.

Adventure Map

Haroyell > Meya
Haroyell > Soori Outpost
Haroyell > Dupressa
Meya > Mardenia (End of Route)
Meya > Ezera Forest
Soori Outpost > Akarnae Academy
Soori Outpost > Garon
Dupressa > Garon
Ezera Forest > Mount Paedris
Akarnae Academy > Woodhaven
Garon > Chateau Shondelle (End on Route)
Garon > Denasa
Mount Paedris > Maroo (End of Route)
Mount Paedris > Woodhaven
Denasa > Graevale (End of Route)
Woodhaven > Tryllin
Woodhaven > Karonia
Tryllin > Nialas (End of Route)
Karonia > Hallowgate (End of Route)

Mardenia: Read a book with “Wild” in the title
Maroo: Read a book with “Night” in the title
Nialas: Read a book with “Dragon” in the title
Hallowgate: Read a book with “Dead” in title
Graevale: Read a book with “Star” in title
Chateau Shondelle: Read a book with “Queen” in title

Forgot your book Space

Forgot your book & Dropped your book Spaces

These spaces replace the Luxury Tax/Income Tax spaces on a real Monopoly board. Landing on either of these means you lose points and you will continue to lose points every time you land on them.

Bookshelf Space: Tree/s on cover

Bookshelf Spaces

The Book Shelf spaces replace the Train Stations/Airports on normal Monopoly boards. For these squares there is also a Reading Challenge which functions the same as the property spaces, however you have the ability to earn bonus points with these squares! You can land on any Book Shelf space and complete the challenge more than once. If you complete 1 challenge you receive 100 points, if you land on a 2nd Book Shelf space and complete the challenge you received 150 points, 3rd is 200 points & 4th is 250 points. This counts for all of the Bookshelf spaces, so first you could land on the left most Book Shelf, complete the challenge and get 100 points & then the next time you could land on the right side Book Shelf, complete the challenge and get another 150 points. You do not have to land on and recomplete the exact same space just to get the bonus points.
This is slightly hard to explain but hopefully this makes sense! Any questions simply comment below.

Magical Ability

Magical Ability

Introducing the Magical Ability space! This replaces the Sorting Hat space for Round 1. For the Magical Ability space you will need to use a random number generator or get a person to chose a number at random for you between 1 & 6. You will then receive the corresponding magical ability. You can only use this ability once for each time you land on the space. You do not need to use the ability straight away. It is completely up to you when you use your ability and on which space.

1. Skip 1 challenge & earn the points
2. Earn double points on 1 challenge
3. Double the amount on your dice roll
4. Skip 1 challenge (no points earned)
5. Change 1 word in a challenge to suit you
6. Read any book you chose for 1 challenge

Get a Pet space!

Get a Pet!

The Get a Pet space replaced the Reaping space from Round 1. In Round 3 to receive a pet companion to go on your Bookopoly ReadAThon journey you will need to check out the Get a Pet Graphic, choose your type of pet & complete the corresponding challenge. When the challenge is completed you receive your pet & 100 points!

Dog: Read a book with food on the cover
Cat: Read a book with a POC on the cover
Bird: Read a book with a hat on the cover
Lizard: Read a book with flowers on the cover
Fish: Read a book with a crown on the cover
Hamster: Read a book with blood on the cover

Corner Spaces

Go Space

Obviously we have the starting point, Go which is where you begin and will also collect 200 points every time you go past.

Next is the In a Reading Slump/Just waiting space. This is where you will sit if you are In a Reading Slump. To get out of the Reading Slump you have 3 options!
Roll a doubles on your dice within 5 rolls (If you don’t roll doubles within 5 rolls you must choose another option)
OR
Lose 100 points
OR
Use a ‘Get Out of Your Reading Slump Free Card’

Next is the Library. This is just to fill space. If you land on this space simply roll again and continue on.

Lastly is the Fall into a Reading Slump space. If you land on this one you must head on over to the In a Reading Slump square and follow the above rules. If you pass ‘GO’ do NOT collect 200 points.

I have set up a Google Sheet for you guys to record your points & current position on the board. It is up to you to keep track of your points but this just gives you a place to put that information!

September & Bookopoly ReadAThon 📚 TBR

It’s already September which is crazy! I will of course be participating in Bookopoly ReadAThon in September which is a ReadAThon I host. Obviously because Bookopoly runs by receiving a challenge based on a dice roll I won’t really be able to set out a TBR but here are some books that I hope I can fit into Bookopoly challenges as well as a couple ARCs and a Group Read I will be reading.

Currently Reading

eARC I will be reading

Indigo Owl is a book I received from Wakefield Press as part of a Blog Tour and my review will be out on the 26th of September!
Firefrost is an eARC that I received through NetGalley which releases 21st of September so look out for my review sometime before then.

ReadALong

A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow

This one is the first ReadALong for The YA Book Nerds which is the Facebook Group I run! The ReadALong will take place from the 17th to 30th of September and we will be chatting over on Discord! If you wanted to join this ReadALong just head over to our Discord.

Books I hope to fit into challenges

Bookopoly ReadAThon 📚 Round 2 💫 Announcement

You guys wanted Round 2 soon so here it is!

Dates

Round 2 of the Bookopoly ReadAThon will go for the entirety of September! From 12:00AM on the 1st of September till 11:59pm on the 30th of September!

The Bookopoly Board

You are welcome to download this image and enlarge to print out or simply download it and zoom in to see it better. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make the text any bigger or the information simply wouldn’t of fitted.

I break down this Bookopoly Board in my YouTube Announcement for the visually impaired

August 💫 Tome Topple, Dewey’s 24 Hour 2020 Reverse ReadAThon & Roll the Dice ReadAThon 📚 TBR!

Yes, I am taking on 3 ReadAThons minimum this month! May I join another? Maybe. Maybe not. We will see!!
So let’s jump into it

General August TBR & Dewey’s 24 Hour 2020 Summer Reverse ReadAThon TBR

So firstly, Dewey’s 24 Hour ReadAThon begins 7th of August at 8pm EST. So for me in Australia it begins at 10am on the 8th of August! Which is also the same day Tome Topple begins.
I have a general TBR which I will be focusing on during the days that I am not doing any ReadAThons (1st to 7th) and also during Dewey’s. Even though Dewey’s is also day 1 of Tome Topple I am not going to stress about the 500+ page requirement for Dewey’s.

Fable & Firefrost are both eARCs that I need to read & review before September. So they will be my first priorities. Then I will concentrate on the others if I have time.

Tome Topple TBR

Tome Topple goes from 8th to 21st of August and I have a bit of an ambitious TBR but I am aiming to try and get some of the books off my TBR that are on my 20 books to read in 2020 list.

These are the 5 books I will be aiming to read. Which as I said may be ambitious but I will try my hardest! I may end up picking up The Devil’s Thief as an audiobook and maybe one of the others. Will just see how I feel!

Roll the Dice ReadAThon

So I don’t have a TBR for this one as I will be discovering what I will be reading as it happens. For this one there are 2 methods that you could chose to take and I am using the method where you assign each of your shelves a number, roll the dice to chose a shelf, then assign each book on that shelf a number & roll again to discover what book to read. So obviously I don’t have a TBR for this one!

Bookopoly ReadAThon 💫 Announcement!

Yes, I am hosting ANOTHER ReadAThon! I had an awesome idea and I just had to go with it. Let’s jump straight in as this will be a long one!!

Dates

Round 1 of the Bookopoly ReadAThon will go for the entirety of July! From 12:00AM on the 1st of July till 11:59pm on the 31st of July!

The Bookopoly Board

You are welcome to download this image and enlarge to print out or simply download it and zoom in to see it better. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make the text any bigger or the information simply wouldn’t of fitted.

The Basics

For this ReadAThon all you have to do is roll 2 dice and make your way around the board earning or losing points based on the spaces you land on and what is required for each space. Pretty simple but we have added some fun elements like quizzes & bonus challenges throughout!

Also, if you roll a double when making your way around the board you simply roll again. Roll doubles, move your marker, roll again and then complete the challenge in that space. This is the same as in the actual game to keep it easy.

Different types of spaces

Property spaces
All you have to do when you land on one of these is Read a book that fits the challenge and once you do you Earn the specified points & then take your next roll.
We have tried to keep the challenges broad but if you simply do not have a book that fits the challenge you can read something that is kinda similar but doesn’t quite fit and still earn full points or read something that is the opposite. Get creative with it. As long as you can justify the book you chose then you can earn the points.
If you land on the same property space twice throughout the month you can either complete the challenge again and earn more points OR skip and roll again but not earn any points.

Treasure Chest & Adventure Spaces!
These replace the Community Chest & Chance spaces on a normal Monopoly board. For both of these you will need to complete a Quiz.
The Adventure Quiz is a story based quiz where you make decisions based on the scenario in the story. There are 3 possible outcomes and you will either earn or lose points depending on which you get. If you land on this quiz for a second time simply skip and roll again.

These spaces replace the Luxury Tax/Income Tax spaces on a real Monopoly board. Landing on either of these means you lose points and you will continue to lose points every time you land on them.

Book Shelf Spaces!

This one is pretty simple. We wanted to incorporate a Harry Potter feature because Harry’s birthday is in July when we are having the ReadAThon!
If you know what your Hogwarts House is already then that is awesome! If you do not simply head over to the Wizarding World website and take the quiz to find out. Once you know your house simply complete the corresponding challenge!
Gryffindor: Read a book with Red on the cover.
Slytherin: Read a book with Green on the cover.
Hufflepuff: Read a book with Yellow on the cover.
Ravenclaw: Read a book with Blue on the cover.

You receive 100 points for completing a sorting hat challenge!

I decided to include a Reaping space to share in the excitement of the release of The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (The prequel to The Hunger Games).
For this one you actually get to make a choice in the Reading Challenge you receive. Simply chose any of the 12 Districts and complete the corresponding Reading Challenge.

District 1: Read a book with Gold on the cover
District 2: Read a book with a weapon on the cover
District 3: Read a book that features advanced technology
District 4: Read a book that features the ocean/lake/creek/etc.
District 5: Read a book with a powerful message or with someone seeking power
District 6: Read a book that features travel
District 7: Read a book with a tree/plant on the cover
District 8: Read a book with a colourful/rainbow cover
District 9: Read a book set in the outback
District 10: Read a book with an animal on the cover
District 11: Read a book that has a landscape on the cover
District 12: Read a book with a black cover

You receive 100 points for completing a Reaping challenge!

Corner Spaces

Points Tracker

I have set up a Google Sheet for you guys to record your points & current position on the board. It is up to you to keep track of your points but this just gives you a place to put that information!
