My Goodreads Choice Awards Challenge 💫 November TBR 📚 Blogtober #31

So, as many of you may know Goodreads has just opened their Goodreads Choice Award voting. As many of you also probably know the Goodreads Choice Awards are not that great for fairness…
Firstly, there are books on there that haven’t even released yet or have just released (These Violent Delights for example), so how can those books compete with books that released in January for example. Of course the books released earlier in the year will get more votes as simply more people have had the chance to read it.
Secondly there is often books categorised in genres that they simply don’t fit in.
Thirdly there is a lot of sequels which of course will get more love because if someone reads a sequel it is because they loved book 1 and will likely love book 2. So they have an unfair advantage to first books in series & stand-alones.
Fourthly (is that a word?) there is people that vote for books simply because they like the author, even if they haven’t read the book
And lastly there is people that vote for a book when it was literally the only one in the category they have read. Really this is the case in all cases though because unless you have read every book in the category how do you really know it’s the best one there?
There are other reasons but these are the main ones that make this unfair.

ANYWAY!
For that reason I decided to take on the challenge to read as many books in one category as I can. The category I chose is Young Adult Fantasy/Sci-Fi

There is some books in the list that I will not be reading because they are sequels of books I haven’t/or won’t read. Also one of them I DNFd in the past. So I won’t be completing that one but I can still give a bit of feedback for it in the end!

Already Read

DNFd

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

Won’t be reading

Will be trying to read!

So with that discussed let’s talk about what I am planning to read in November!

November TBR!

Firstly, Audiobooks!

And now for physical books, eBooks & graphic novels

Let’s Chat!

Bookshelf Scavenger Hunt 📚 Blogtober #30

I have done a book shelf scavenger hunt on my YouTube before but it had different prompts. So I thought I would give this one a go!

1. Find a book that starts with an “N”

Never Fade by Alexandra Bracken

2. Find a book cover that’s mostly brown

Pride by Ibi Zoboi

3.  Find a book that’s based on a true story

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

4. Find a multiple perspective book

Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody

5. Find a book you read last year

Enchantee by Gita Trelease

6. Find the most recent book that you bought

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

Well this is the most recent one I got in the mail anyway. My most recent purchases online have not arrived yet!

7. Find a book cover you don’t like

After the Funeral by Agatha Christie

8. Find a retelling

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

9. Find a book that is also a movie

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

I am still yet to watch it but it is a movie!

10. Find a book written this year

Loveless by Alice Oseman

Well maybe not written this year but it was published this year!

11. Find a non-fiction book

The Complete MAUS by Art Spiegelman

12. Find a book you have told others to read

Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson

13. Find a book with a tree on the cover

In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire

14. Find a book where the author’s name is the same as yours (first, middle or last)

Yeah, I don’t own one. I don’t even know of any books by someone with the first name Eliza or last name Eames. So instead I chose a book that has a character called Eliza. She isn’t a main character but she is in there!

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

15. Find a book you have read more than once.

Akarnae by Lynette Noni

16. Find a book you didn’t finish

Don’t have one for this. I don’t keep books I have DNFd…

17. Find a book with a king in it

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

The king may not have been a major character and also not in the book for long but he was there, so it counts!

18. Find a book that’s purple with its dust jacket off

This is the OwlCrate edition of All the Stars and Teeth. The original cover has a blue naked hardcover.

19. Find a book you will read by the end of the year

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron
Let’s Chat!

Have you done a bookshelf scavenger hunt before?! Because if you haven’t you should give it a go! Give yourself a time frame if you want to make it a challenge!

Last Year I Was Reading… 💫 #8 📚 Blogtober #29

So, I’m joining a weekly feature that is kind of like a Throwback Thursday! Last Year I Was Reading… was created by ReadingMaria!

Take your current read and compare it to what you reading this exact time last year. Which one do you like better? What is different about the books? Any special facts/things you want to make note of or bring attention to? Be sure to link it back to my blog so I can see them!

This Year I Am Reading…

Queen of Volts by Amanda Foody

I’m currently about 70 pages into Queen of Volts and loving being back in this world. This is book 3 to Ace of Shades which I LOVED so this is a highly anticipated read! I will be sad to finish this one and end this series but I also can’t wait to see what goes down in this one!

Last Year I Was Reading…

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

I actually wasn’t reading anything this time last year but I finished the audiobook for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban the day before, so close enough for me. Of course I love Harry Potter!

Argh how can I compared when I’m comparing to Harry Potter!? I’m going to have to give it to HP as it’s just amazing and also I’m only 70 pages into Queen of Volts which is a 600 page book so we are still setting up and just starting to get into the action. So as of my current point in Queen of Volts compared to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as a whole it just can’t compare unfortunately. I do highly recommend checking out Ace of Shades though if you haven’t already!

Let’s Chat!

Top Ten Tuesday 💫 New Releases with spooky covers 📚 Blogtober #27

Yes, I am jumping back on the Top Ten Tuesday band wagon but it may not be every week. I’m just planning on jumping in when I enjoy the prompt of the week. So these will be pretty random.

Top Ten Tuesday is a monthly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish but now lives at The Artsy Reader Girl and you can find all the info and upcoming prompts Here.

Prompt: Halloween Freebie

So these will not necessarily be halloweeny books. I’m Aussie & don’t really celebrate Halloween besides using it as an excuse to dress up once a year & go to the pub. It’s also not ‘Fall’ here. It’s currently Spring, so those Fall/Halloween vibes just aren’t there for me really. So instead of doing a list of Halloween related or Halloween feeling books I thought I would just show off 10 books that have recently released/upcoming releases that have spooky/creepy covers

1. The Desolations of Devil’s Acre by Ransom Riggs

This one isn’t set to releases until Feb 2021 but I had to include it as the cover released a couple hours ago & it’s definitely creepy!

2. Burn Our Bodies Down by Rory Power

Burn Our Bodies Down releases in July & this is Rory Power’s second book. I read Wilder Girls last year & I wasn’t impressed so hopefully this one is better!

3. Hemlock by Rue Volley

I have never heard of this book & know nothing about it but the cover definitely gives off eerie vibes! It is marketed as romance but I don’t think I’ll be adding it to my TBR. Released in August.

4. Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare

Clown in a Cornfield released in August & I read it last week & really enjoyed it. It’s a pretty simple slasher style horror & it made for a fun read.

5. Some King of Twisted Love by Rachel Sullivan

This is another one I had never heard of but I love the creepy vibes that the cover gives off. I’m actually planning on going as a siren for Halloween at the pub, so this is perfect.

6. Horrid by Katrina Leno

Horrid is not one that’s on my TBR but I have heard of it. I received a copy in a Subscription boxes earlier in the month and have already sold it as it just doesn’t sound up my alley. The cover is definitely creepy though.

7. The Reckless Afterlife of Harriet Stoker by Lauren James

The Reckless Afterlife of Harriet Stoker is another one that I hadn’t heard of before making this list but it actually sounds really intriguing, so I have added it to my TBR!

8. Even if We Break by Marieke Nijkamp

Even If We Break released in September I read it in September. It was really good & super creepy and the masks on this cover are also creepy!

9. This is Not a Ghost Story by Andrea Portes

Another one I’m adding to my TBR thanks to this list! This is Not a Ghost Story releases in November, so it should have been included in my November Anticipated Releases but I didn’t know it existed yesterday when I wrote that post.

10. Don’t Tell a Soul by Kirsten Miller

Yet another I hadn’t heard of before but at least I have heard of the author. I read & DNFd the book that Kirsten Miller releases with Jason Segel, Otherworld.

Let’s Chat!

What creepy covered books do you have on your TBR?

November Anticipated Releases 📚 Blogtober #26

This will be a short one as there is only 4 books I’m looking forward to that are releasing in November. I feel like the releases have kinda slowed down in November & December as there is very few I’m interested in!

November 3rd

The Ravens by Kass Morgan & Danielle Paige

The Ravens is a YA Fantasy that features a sorority that is actually a secret coven of witches. This one sounds fascinating & while I haven’t read anything by Danielle Paige I have always been curious about the Dorothy Must Die series. As for Kass Morgan, I have enjoyed what I’ve read so far, so hopefully this one will also be good!

November 10th

Rebel Rose by Emma Theriault

Rebel Rose is a YA Historical Fantasy Retelling of Beauty and the Beast. This one is apparently based on the real story behind Beauty and the Beast which makes me very curious! I love a good retelling, so I’m keen for this one.

Those Who Prey by Jennifer Moffett

I’ve been in a huge YA Thriller/Mystery mood so I am keen to get to Those Who Prey which is a psychological thriller. This is about a college freshman who is seduced into joining a cult & is then trying to escape it.

November 17th

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

These Violent Delights is another YA Historical Retelling but this one is based on Romeo & Juliet but set in 1920’s Shanghai. While Romeo & Juliet is romance it doesn’t sound like These Violent Delights is too romance heavy, so that makes me super keen!

Let’s Chat!

My Life in Books Tag 📚 Blogtober #24

Today I am doing the My Life in Books Tag! So let’s jump in!

1. Find a book for each of your initials

Well I don’t have a middle name, so this is easy!
E: Escpaing from Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco
E: Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Librarby by Chris Grabenstein

2. Count your age along your bookshelf: What book is it?

Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve

3. Pick a book set in your city/country

Tomorrow When the War Began by John Marsden

4. Pick a book that represents a destination you’d love to travel to

Does this have to be real life location because screw that! I’m going to Medora!

Akarnae by Lynette Noni

5. Pick a book that’s your favourite colour

The Tales of Beedle the Bard

This light bluey purple colour it just stunning! My exact favourite colour is a kind of turquoise/aqua/teal kinda colour but I don’t have a book that is exactly that colour. I do have a candle that is this exact colour I love though! You can find it HERE!

6. Which book do you have the fondest memories of?

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

This is an obvious one. Harry Potter will always have a special place in my heart even if the author is a questionable human being.

7. Which book did you have the most difficulty reading?

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

Salt to the Sea is a WWII book that is written beautifully and is definitely a difficult one to stomach as it’s just so heartbreaking!

8. Which book in your TBR pile will give you the biggest accomplishment when you finish it?

Gothic Fantasy: Detective Mystery Short Stories

This is a massive short story collection that has ALOT of stories in it! I’d love to read it but it’s just huge & will be a big commitment.

Graphic Novels still on my TBR! 📚 Blogtober #23

I was hoping to read a lot more during Graphics-A-Thon but I just didn’t have the time with work. So I thought I would talk about the Graphic Novels/Manga’s that are still on my TBR!

1. Wicked Things by John Allison & Max Sarin

This is a YA detective Graphic Novel which sounds super fun! There is only this single volume so will be a quick & easy read hopefully.

2. Slam! by Pamela Ribon & Veronica Fish

I feel like I read more sports based Graphic Novels than I ever would sports related books! This is one of them. Slam! is based around Roller Derby and has just the two volumes so another quick & fun read by the sounds of it.

3. Brave Chef Brianna by Sam Sykes & Selina Espiritu

Another single volume graphic novel! This one I honestly know nothing about but I’m guessing it involves cooking and the cover just looks so interesting.

4. Hex Vet by Sam Davies

A two volume graphic novel series about a vet that specialised in magical creatures? I’m in!

5. By Night by John Allison & Christine Larson

This one is a 3 volume fantasy graphic novel that sounds super interesting!

6. B.B. Free by Gabby Rivera, Kieran Quigley & Royal Dunlap

Volume 1 of B.B. Free is currently out but Volume 2 doesn’t release until next year! So I will probably hold off and read this one closer to the release of Volume 2 so I can read them both together! Either way I am super interested in this one and it sounds like it has amazing diversity!

7. Bee and PuppyCat by Natasha Allegri

I have no idea what this is about but it looks hilarious and it’s fantasy, so I’m in.

8. Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion IV, Werther Dell’Edera & Miguel Muetro

I want to get more into horror graphic novels & try and convince my partner to read them with. me seen as he likes horror but doesn’t love reading. I feel like a horror graphic novel is the perfect middle ground!

9. Ghosted in L.A. by Sina Grace, Siobhan Keenan & Cathy Le

This is another one I will probably wait to read as Volume 3 comes out in December. So I will wait till then and then read all 3.

10. Basically everything Junji Ito

I’ve read one bind of Junji Ito stories so far and that was Frankenstein and it was very interesting. So I’m keen to read more by this author. I have featured Gyo, Uzumaki & Tomie as they are the ones I most hear talked about but there is others by the author that interests me as well.

11. Check, Please! by Ngozi Ukazu

This one is talked about so much and I’m so curious to get to it! It sounds cute and so much fun so I’m keen!

12. Brightly Woven by Alexandra Bracken, Leigh Dragoon & Kit Seaton

Brightly Woven is based on Alexandra Bracken’s debut novel, which I personally haven’t read but I love Alexandra Bracken’s The Darkest Minds series so I’m keen to get to this one!

Let’s Chat!

Are there any other Graphical Novels that I should have on my radar?

This Year I Am Reading…

The Inheritaance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

I’ve just finished The Inheritance Games today and it was amazing! Listened to the whole thine in 24 hour period and I had so much fun! I loved mystery aspect & it was very gripping and I didn’t want to put it down!

Last Year I Was Reading…

Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell & Faith Erin Hicks

I loved Pumpkinheads and was thinking of rereading it this October! It’s such a fun Graphic Novel and super quick. This is just one of those feel good books but with a hint of autumn (fall). The illustrations are also amazing.

This is a hard one to compare as they are just so different but I think I’m going to go for The Inheritance Games. Both are really good books in their own right but I think I love the mysterious aspect of The Inheritance Games a little more! Highly recommend both though!

Auto Buy Authors 📚 Blogtober #19

Today I am going to talk about the authors whose books I automatically buy without even reading a synopsis half the time!

1. Maureen Johnson

Truly Devious is in my top five favourite series! I am so keen for The Box in the Woods & I will definitely be pre-ordering it closer to release which is set for 27th of April 2021. I’m also very keen to eventually see what Maureen Johnson comes up with next. She does have one older release that I plan to give a go at some point but it always makes me nervous going backwards in release order because maybe the author wasn’t as good or experienced then as they are now. I do want to have a go at The Name of the Star but the other don’t interest me as they are contemporary romances & that’s just not my cup of tea.

2. Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

I’m pretty sure this duo is on most YA readers Auto Buy list at this point. I personally don’t love Jay Kristoff’s writing alone but I do enjoy Amie Kaufmans & I love them together! I can’t wait for Aurora Rising #3 and I’m hopeful that we will see something else from these two in the future!

3. Karen M. McManus

I’ve read all of Karen M. McManus’s released books, the One of Us is Lying duology & Two Can Keep a Secret. I have The Cousins pre-ordered and it is set to release December 1st. So not long to wait! Karen M. McManus is an amazing YA mystery writer and I’m excited for The Cousins and everything else she writes after that!

4. Ashley Poston

So I have only actually read 3 of the 5 that are currently out but I’m getting there! I’ve read Geekerella & The Princess and the Fangirl. I only got Bookish and the Beast recently and I just haven’t gotten to it yet. Hopefully after my spooky Halloween reads and done. I’ve also read Heart of Iron but am yet to get to Soul of Stars but again hopefully soon. I might do a reading vlog binging the Ashley Poston books once my copy of Among the Beasts and Briars arrives!

5. Seanan McGuire (AKA Mira Grant)

So far I have read 6 books by Seanan McGuire but she has SOOOO many its kinda crazy. Not only does she has 40+ books under Seanan McGuire but she also has a heap under Mira Grant. I’ve read book 1 – 5 for the Wayward Children series as well as Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day which is one of her standalones. I’m keen to see what she comes out with next but as for her older stuff I honestly have no idea where to start. I am curious about the Rolling in the Deep (possibly) series but that’s the only one I’m actually sure I might read at some point.

6. Lynette Noni

Another in my top 5 favourite series is The Medoran Chronicles by Lynette Noni. The only book that she has published that I have not read is A Very Medoran Kaldoras which is a Christmas short story set in The Medoran Chronicles world. I also really enjoyed the Whisper duology and I can’t wait for The Prison Healer which is set to release April 2021.

7. Alice Oseman

There is just something about Alice Osemans books that I just love! Solitaire is probably my least favourite but it’s still good. Raido Silence, Loveless & I Was Born For This are favourites in that order. As well as the Heartstopper graphic novels & the companion book to them Nick & Charlie. I can’t wait for Volume 4 and then whatever Alice Oseman releases next!

8. Nadine Brandes

I’ve read Nadine Brandes two most recent releases, Romanov & Fawkes, and both were amazing and extremely unique! I am really keen to see what she comes out with next & I’m also curious about her older series Out of Time.

9. Amanda Foody

So far I have read Ace of Shades & King of Fools from the Ace of Shades Trilogy and I’m really keen to have time to sit down and read Queen of Volts! I’ve also read Daughter of the Burning City which is an amazing standalone! You can bet that I will be pre-ordering The Accidental Apprentice which is book 1 in her new middle grade series & All of us Villains which is co-authored by Christine Lynn Herman, whose writing I also love!

10. Angie Thomas

I have read The Hate U Give three times & I’ve read On the Come Up twice because they are both amazing! I can’t wait for Concrete Rose and literally anything else she writes in the future!
