Top 5 Wednesday – Books Without Romance on my TBR

Header Image (79)

This Meme is hosted by Thoughts On Tomes and the prompts can be found on Goodreads.

This week’s prompt is: Books Without Romance
— A few (very, very few) people complained about the “shipping” topics lately, so I thought it would be good to talk about books that don’t have a romantic subplot! This is a really hard one, so if you can’t find any, you can talk about some where the romance is super super minor. Like barely mentioned… at all…

So I haven’t actually read 5 books without romance or with very little, so I’m going with books on my TBR that are meant to have no romance. I basically just googled ‘YA with no romance’ so if any of this actually have a romance in them then let me know! I haven’t read them yet obviously so I don’t actually know if the no romance part is true.

1. The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
2. Eon by Alison Goodman
3. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
4. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
5. This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

Well that is all for this weeks Top 5 Wednesday!

So I have wanted to get into some middle grade books as I’ve only ever read two and I want to read more. This book sounds like an awesome fantasy book. I actually purchased it a couple days ago with the money Mum gave me for my birthday. It’s not breaking my book buying ban if the money was a gift right? haha

Verdict: KEEP

I’ll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson

sun_375w (1)

This is a diverse book that is also about family. I mainly read diverse books that focus on the LGBTQIA+ side of diversity and I want to read more. I have read a few but not enough and this one sounds really interesting as it is told in the 2 POVs at different times in their life. This book definitely sounds like something I want to try.

Verdict: KEEP

Naughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman

So on the front cover this book is said to be a thriller but the description shouts romance in a dystopian setting. As you may no I’m not a huge fan of romance concentrated books and this screams that it is one.

Verdict: DELETE

Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst

OFAScoverR-678x1024 (1)

It’s so uncommon to find diverse characters in fantasy books. It’s happening more often but there still isn’t enough out there! This book and magic world sounds really interesting and the diversity is just a plus. I’m keen to get to this book!

Verdict: KEEP

Tattoo Atlas by Tim Floreen

There is a lot of diverse books in this post. This one is a Sci-Fi Mystery with a GLBT character. This book sounds really interesting and I have never read a mystery besides Agatha Christie so it would be interesting to read a mystery by another author.

Verdict: KEEP

A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray

So this is mainly on my TBR because of the cover. I do have a copy of this book on my Scribd app. So this book is said to be a crossover of Orphan Black & Cloud Atlas which I don’t know what either is, I have heard of the Orphan Black show but never actually watched it. So from that I don’t know what to expect from that. But the synopsis does sound really interesting. A multi dimensional hunt for a murder? I’m intrigued.

Verdict: KEEP

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Night-Circus-Cover-low-res (1)

This is such a popular book that I want to read it just for that. It does seem to have a strong romance theme but hopefully it won’t be too overpowering to the story. This is a book that I want to give a chance even though it is romance focused as there is so much praise that I want to see for myself if the hype is worth it.

Verdict: KEEP

The Ocean At The End Of The Lane by Neil Gaiman

17026_413852478709121_1163712783_n (1)

So I do want to give a horror book ago and everyone has recommended Neil Gaiman for that! Also this book is really short so it seems like a good place to start in horror. I do already own a copy of this book that I purchased last year but just haven’t got to. The synopsis just makes me so curious to found out what happened to our MC when he was a kid!

Verdict: KEEP

Prisoner of Night and Fog by Anne Blankman

17668473 (1)

I love Historical Fiction books, especially ones set during WWII. This book’s MC is the niece of none other than Adolf Hitler and that is such an interesting POV to come from in a WWII book! There is obviously going to be a romance as a main part of this book but I still want to give this book a go because of everything else! So hopefully it won’t be too much and at least the romance seems to play a legit part in the plot of the story.

Verdict: KEEP

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

I honestly don’t know why this book is on my TBR at all. New Adult Contemporary Romance? Why did I put this on there?! This is so not something I want to read.

Verdict: DELETE

Well that is all for today! Deleted 2!

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

The synopsis for this definitely sounds interesting, but it is still just a romance. I know that so many people love this series and there was so much hype surrounding the last book release was a bit crazy! But this isn’t something I would actually read and it’s only on my TBR because of all they hype surrounding it.

Verdict: DELETE

Harry Potter: The Creature Vault: The Creatures and Plants of the Harry Potter Films by Jody Revenson

y450-293 (4)

I have three of these books on my TBR and I’m only going to write one description. I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan and I want to know everything! I have the Character Vault and it was so interesting see things for the filming side of things and I want to read all of them!

Verdict: KEEP

Harry Potter: Magical Places from the Films: Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, and Beyond! by Jody Revenson

y450-293 (5)

Verdict: KEEP

Harry Potter: The Artifact Vault by Jody Revenson

Verdict: KEEP

Fate of Flames by Sarah Raughley

download (22)

This book sounds so interesting! Magical powers, phantoms, beasts and badass females?! This book sounds right up my alley and I will definitely be getting my hands on a copy of this book!

Verdict: KEEP

The Wangs Vs. The World by Jade Chang

28114515 (1)

This book follows a Chinese family living in America. I haven’t read a book about a Chinese main character I don’t think, so that is one reason I want to read it. Also this is meant to be a contemporary comedy book of sorts and I really want to read a book that is intended as comedy but also about a diverse topic (Immigration).

Verdict: KEEP

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

So this is an Historical Fiction book about being a slave in America in the pre-Civil War Era. There is a lot of mixed reviews about this book and some people have said they didn’t connect with characters and there were also some comments about things being inaccurate. I have no idea if this will be accurate, but I still want to read this book. I don’t know a lot about slavery in America, as I’m not american I didn’t study it in school as or anything like that. But I hope this book can show me a bit of what it was like. And I’m really interested in read this. Also I haven’t read a Historical Fiction book that wasn’t set around war, so that will interesting.

Verdict; KEEP

Burn for Burn by Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian

So this is a book about revenge, however it is still labeled as a romance, which turns me off this book. I have a copy of this on Scribd as it sounded interesting by the synopsis, but now that I’m seeing that it is labeled as a romance I’m not interested. The main reason I was interested was because it just sounded like a revenge story and I was intrigued. But now, not so much.

Verdict: DELETE

Trutchwitch by Susan Dennard

tumblr_nmkditGhQ61snf6rko1_1280 (1)

This is a series I have wanted to start for ages, just haven’t got around to it. I am a massive fantasy fan and this world sounds so interesting! This book also seems like it doesn’t seem to be a focus on romance at all which I am loving! It’s so unique to find a book that isn’t focused on romance, so I’m keen for that!

Verdict: KEEP

Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes

This is a high fantasy world and the world itself sounds really interesting. I like how in the synopsis you can choose whose side you think sounds the best. There is an implied romance, I think, in the synopsis but it doesn’t seem to be a big focus so I’m not too worried. I like how this book follows 4 different characters and I’m assuming that it will be written in Multi POV.

Verdict: KEEP

So I only deleted 2 books, but it is better than nothing haha! But oh well, that is all for todays Down the TBR Hole!

The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon

This book does sound interesting and it is also diverse as one of the main characters Natasha is being deported. I don’t remember what her nationality she is and it’s not in the synopsis but from memory I’m pretty sure she is from a nationality I haven’t read from the POV of before. The only thing that is putting me off this book is that it is so obviously going to be an insta love story which is something I CANNOT stand! So for that reason I will probably never read it.

Verdict: DELETE

Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

Well this book sounds really interesting! I read The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson last year as I received it in The YA Chronicles subscription box and really enjoyed it. I know this book is a romance and I really hope that it won’t involve insta love!

Verdict: KEEP

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

EverythingEverythingCover 7.11.08 pm

I have heard fairly mixed reviews about this book. There was one review I saw on Goodreads that said they don’t support the trope ‘love conquers all – including a life threatening illness’ and if that is the case of this book then I kinda don’t want to read it, I will though as I own the book and it’s only 300 pages.

Verdict: KEEP

November 9 by Colleen Hoover

So I only have this on my TBR as I have it on my iBooks app. It popped up one day as either 99c or free on iBooks so I grabbed it. This book does sound interesting, the synopsis is intriguing and I love the idea that one of the main characters is a writer. But this is also honestly sounding like those romance movies I strongly dislike, for example: The Notebook.. I don’t think I will ever read a Colleen Hoover book as I’m just not into contemporary romances.

Verdict: DELETE

Everything Leads To You by Nina LaCour

I have read You Know Me Well which was co-authored by Nina LaCour & David Levithan and I really enjoyed it! This book sounds like it will be just as good and it will be interesting to read a book only by Nina LaCour to see if I enjoy the writing of it as much as I did You Know Me Well. Also I am also all for diverse books and this also sounds interesting by the way the main character will be introduced to a new lifestyle of sorts.

Verdict: KEEP

Bright Smoke, Cold Fire by Rosamund Hodge

This book sounds very interesting. It is very obviously a Romeo and Juliet retelling, even using the same names by the sound of it. But the fantasy world around it is whats intriguing me most of all! I have read Romeo and Juliet, as I had to for school and I neither loved nor hated it, it was just kinda eh. So I’m hoping this will be a better version for me. But also there are a love of negative reviews for this book and that average rating on Goodreads is 3.3 so it sounds like a fair few people disliked it. I’m still interested though and want to try it for myself. Also the last part of the Goodreads synopsis is what really pulled me in:

“Both pairs will find friendship where they least expect it. Both will find that Viyara holds more secrets and dangers than anyone ever expected. And outside the walls, death is waiting. . .”

Verdict: KEEP

The Queen of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst

For some reason this cover just reminds me of LOTR. Anyway, first there is absolutely no mention of romance in the synopsis which I am loving! This book sounds like an action packed high fantasy adventure and I am so far all of that!

Verdict: KEEP

Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige

This sounds like an awesome take on a retelling of The Winter’s Tale! I haven’t read The Winter’s Tale I have just seen other people say that it is a retelling of it. I haven’t read Danielle Paige’s other series Dorothy Must Die, but it is on my TBR and I want to get to it soon! Basically everything in the synopsis sounds really interesting and like something I would enjoy! Lets hope I do.

Verdict: KEEP

P.S. I Like You by Kasie West

This just sounds like the typical ‘cute contemporary’ and I don’t really care for it. I don’t think I need to explain further than that.

Verdict: DELETE

Legend by Marie Lu

This sounds interesting. The world sounds very different and cool and that is what is drawing me in. Also a lot of people seem to love this series and it is one that I have wanted to read for ages! Marie Lu is just a very highly praised author and I want to jump on that bandwagon.

Verdict: KEEP

I also had another book on my TBR that I skipped over and that was The Kill Order which is the prequel to The Maze Runner. I read that series a couple years ago some time and I’m just not interested in reading a prequel to it so long after reading the series.

Top Ten Tuesday – Series That I Need To Start

Header Image (61)

Top Ten Tuesday is a monthly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and you can find all the info and upcoming prompts Here.

This week’s prompts is: Top Ten Series I’ve Been Meaning To Start But Haven’t (topic originally done March 2013) — anyone else have a mile long list of series to start like I do??

1. The Lunar Chronicles Series by Marissa Meyer

So I have been meaning to start this series for ages! I bought Cinder sometimes last year but still haven’t picked it up. I read Heartless, also by Marissa Meyer and also a retelling and didn’t enjoy it. It wasn’t horrible, but I just didn’t enjoy it, you can find my review for that review HERE. I will be reading Cinder in July as the Book of the Month for a Goodreads group YA Book Bloggers, feel free to join us if you are are YA book blogger haha!

2. Shades of Magic Series by V.E. Schwab

I honestly have no excuse as to why I haven’t started this series! I own the first book in the series but just haven’t picked it up yet! I really want to try some Victoria/V.E. Schwab as I have heard so many amazing things about basically all of her books! I will probably read the first book soon as I am on a book buying ban and I want to get my physical TBR down a tonne before buying anymore books, so I will read this soon.

3. Daughter of Smoke and Bone Series by Laini Taylor

I have read Strange the Dreamer and it is my favourite book so far this year! I wanted to read this series before reading Strange the Dreamer, but since reading it this series is a lot higher on my TBR!

4. Monsters of Verity Series by Victoria Schwab

So, another Victoria/V.E. Schwab series! Like I said before there is so many good comments about her books and that makes me want to read them! Also I have been told that The Savage Song has no romance.. If that is true, then that is awesome! I don’t know about Our Dark Duet as it only released a few days ago and I haven’t seen a tonner about it yet, but I do avoid reading reviews for books I haven’t read, so it may have been mentioned, but I just haven’t seen it!

5. Passenger Series by Alexandra Bracken

I am reading The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken right now and enjoying it so far! But even before starting The Darkest Minds this book was on my TBR! I also haven’t really read any books about time travel so that is really intriguing me!

6. Dorothy Must Die Series by Danielle Paige

So this was one of the first retellings I ever added to my TBR! And I still haven’t got to it yet!! It seems like there is a tonne of books when you look at the series page on Goodreads because there is 9 prequels to this series, 9!! I think that is what kinda throws me off because each of them are around 100-150 pages! So that is basically 2 full novels before the actual series! And I do want to read them in order as they are prequels. I do still want to read this series though!

7. Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series by Rick Riordan

So I have been meaning to read a Rick Riordan book in years! But I still haven’t and this one kinda includes Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Heroes of Olympus, The Trials of Apollo & Magnus Chase, The Kane Chronicles and the Gods of Asgard series. So basically all of Rick Riordans books haha! I definitely want to start a Rick Riordan book soon!

8. The Witchlands Series by Susan Dennard

So this is only the first 2 books as there is still 3 books to come out! Bloodwitch is the next one but it doesn’t have a cover yet. The world and magic system in this book sounds so interesting and everyone is talking about this book lately and I really want to get in on the hype!

9. The Gold Seer Trilogy by Rae Carson

For one thing these covers are gorgeous! The main reason this is on my TBR is that it is a Fantasy Historical Fiction book! That just sounds so intriguing to me as I’m pretty sure I haven’t read a fantasy historical fiction before, I might have, but I don’t think so! So this is really interesting to me and I’m keen

10. Frostblood Saga by Elly Blake

Again, these covers are gorgeous! This is actually a trilogy but Fireblood actually isn’t out until September and Nightblood isn’t out and doesn’t have a cover yet to use! This book was one of my highly anticipated from last year but I never got around to it! But I really want to get to it soon! It sounds amazing and its very highly praised!

Well that is all for today! I know I missed yesterdays Down the TBR Hole as I just literally forgot! So I will probably do it tomorrow or Thursday!

Book Travelling Thursday – Book With An ‘Ugly’ Cover That’s Beautiful On The Inside

Header Image (55)

Book Travelling Thursday is a weekly meme created by Danielle and Cátia. All you have to do is a pick a book that is related to the theme, the themes are announced on the Goodreads page. Once you have chosen a book you need to find the original cover, the covers from your country, your favourite cover and your least favourite cover.

This week’s prompt is: The inside is what matters… choose a book with an ‘ugly’ cover but that is beautiful on the inside.

Well my first thought was the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead but I have used that in a previous BTT! So I’m going with Bloodline instead, it’s not exactly ugly but I strongly dislike books with actual people on the cover and I really don’t like the covers of either of those series! I’m just going to do it for the first book in the series!

For once I’m going to explain some of my problems I have with a couple of these covers.

That honestly looks like those old style heart tattoo that you see on older guys?!

Sydney’s hair is BLONDE!!!

Again, BLONDE people!

This looks like a bad adult romance book.. And what’s with the crap on Adrian’s face?! The gold on Sydney’s face is because she is an Alchemist, Adrian is a Moroi.. And they never mention other tattoos on his face!

And the others I don’t like just in general.. Does anyone else get Supernatural vibes from that logo/title on the cover on the bottom left! Don’t know what that reminds me of Supernatural but it does!
