Last Year I Was Reading… ūüďö # 1

So, I’m joining a weekly feature that is kind of like a Throwback Thursday! Last Year I Was Reading… was created by ReadingMaria!

Take your current read and compare it to what you reading this exact time last year. Which one do you like better? What is different about the books? Any special facts/things you want to make note of or bring attention to? Be sure to link it back to my blog so I can see them!

This Year I Am Reading…

Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin

I am currently 101 pages into Wolf by Wolf and I am enjoying it! This is a super interesting story based on World War 11 but with a small fantastical element. I LOVE WW11 based books and this is definitely the most unique one I have read so far. I can’t wait to keep reading and see how everything is going to play out.

Last Year I Was Reading…

Wilder Girls by Rory Power

Wilder Girls, I rated 3 stars and I did review this one so you can find that HERE! This one was a huge disappointment for me! The only thing I enjoyed was the setting which was very creepy and atmospheric. The plot, characters and writing in general though all felt very flat. I couldn’t connect with the characters and couldn’t really get invested in the plot at all. The romance was a big no for me as well as. It felt super forced and like it was only thrown in their half heartedly to make sure there was LGBT+ diversity in the book.

So, I’m definitely loving my current read, so far, a lot more than my read from last year! I can’t wait to keep reading Wolf by Wolf.

Let’s Chat!

Top 5 Wednesday – Books to Read without the Synopsis

Copy of Review Banner (3)

This Meme is hosted by Thoughts On Tomes and the prompts can be found on Goodreads.

So here is my Top 5 Wednesday. I’m not 100% sure if I will be able to think of 5 for this as I don’t really read many book synopsis before reading so I don’t think I will actually have 5 but here we go!

Prompt: Books to Read without the Synopsis
–We all know that some synopsis writers spoil events that happen halfway through the book or have heard reviewers say “it’s best to go into this one blind.” Discuss those books.

Review Titles (9) 2

1. Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

bo0b-square-1536 (1)

The synopsis of this book literally gives away the main plot of the book!

2. The Gentlemen’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

You are better off going into this book knowing very little! This book is full of craziness and adventure and it’s definitely worth jumping into blind! It’s a hilarious, diverse and adventurous historical fiction! What more do you need to know?

3. Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody

30237061 (1)

This one I did not read the synopsis for before reading but I have since and I honestly think it could have been left at those first two paragraphs of the synopsis. The third is not necessary. But also I don’t think this synopsis is really needed at all! Seriously, just go into this book knowing nothing and it will amaze you all on its own.

Well, that is all, I didn’t think I would get to 5 and I was right. I just don’t read synopsis’s too often and when I do it’s usually months before I read the book and by then I have forgotten.

Top 5 Wednesday – Books That Aren’t Set In/Inspired By The Western World

Header Image (90)

This Meme is hosted by Thoughts On Tomes and the prompts can be found on Goodreads.

This week‚Äôs prompt is:¬†Books That Aren’t Set In/Inspired By The Western World
–I know this is a long title, but I couldn’t figure out how else to word it and still get the point across. Talk about books that are set outside of the Western World (so outside of North America and Western Europe) or if they are SFF, books that aren’t inspired by those places (so no medieval setting fantasy!)

This will be books I have & haven’t read

1. Cinder by Marissa Meyer (Have Read)

This is set in a Fantasy Beijing (New Beijing)

2. Soundless by Richelle Mead (Have Read)

This meme is hosted by Lia @ Lost in a Story.

Here is what you do:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you‚Äôre feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses¬†of the books
  • Decide: keep it¬†or should it go?

Blog Titles (16)

Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler

This book is only on my TBR because it was a possible read for a ReadAThon but I never actually chose to read it. It’s also nowhere near what I would choose to read myself. Contemporary, Chick Lit, Romance?? No thanks

Verdict: DELETE

The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee

24921954 (1)

This book looks like it has excessive romance in it as it’s mentioned with more than one character in the synopsis. Even though everything else about this book does intrigue me, I’m not a fan of all the romance references. This book has a gorgeous cover though.

Verdict: DELETE

Fear the Drowning Deep by Sarah Glenn Marsh

Another romance.. This book is also a fantasy historical fiction and sounds really interesting. If you have read this book then please let me know how excessive the romance is in this book. I will keep it on my TBR for now as everything else sounds awesome, but the romance is pushing me away.

Verdict: KEEP

Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson

CoverReveals_F15_WalkOnEarth (1)

I have a lot of Historical in this list. This one, however, shows no romance, and also sounds awesome! This is a fantasy historical fiction which are both genres I love. This also has a fair bit of high praise and a lot of people love Rae Carson. So I’m keen to get to this book at some point!

Verdict: KEEP

Nemesis by Anna Banks

So this book is being labeled as a ‘two enemies falling in love’ book and I’m not exactly keen on that. However the rest of this book sounds really interesting and I want to give it a go for that reason. I managed to ignore the general romance in the ACOTAR series, so if the rest of the book is good enough then I will be able to do that with this one too.

Verdict: KEEP

Glitter by Aprilynne Pike

Pretty sure this book is only on here because if the cover, as it is gorgeous. But this is another historical fantasy book. This book does sound really interesting but there is a lot of negative reviews and some of them are from people I trust the opinions of. People have said there is crappy characters, bad world development, and a shitty romance, so for that reason, I think I will leave it.

Verdict: DELETE

Scythe by Neal Shusterman

scythe-book-cover-neal-shusterman (1)

I have been wanting to give a Neal Shusterman book a go for a while, just haven’t got to it. This book sounds awesome and extremely interesting. Apprentices to a scythe in a world with nothing to kill people except¬†scythes. Yep, I’m intrigued!

Verdict: KEEP

Iron Cast by Destiny Soria

28818313 (1)

I must have been looking for historical fantasy books for a reason because this is yet another. This book sounds really fascinating and it has a lot of praise for it!

Verdict: KEEP

Beast by Brie Spangler

A Beauty and the Beast retelling with a transgender love interest? I’m interested in this book, it sounds really cool and I’m yet to read about a transgender character.

Verdict: KEEP

Speed of Life by J.M. Kelly

I have no idea why this is on my TBR, maybe because of the Mustang on the front cover? I don’t know. But this is a YA contemporary and I’m just not interested.

Verdict: DELETE

Deleting 4 books this week and I’m happy with that!

Tag Sunday – The Happiness Tag

Header Image (81)

I was tagged by the awesome Olga @ Olga’s Oddish¬†Obsession to do the Happiness Tag! Make sure you go and check out her answers HERE! And thanks for the tag! It’s fun to get away from tags that are about books sometimes. And for that reason I will not be using books as an answer for the first question as it’s kinda obvious, I wouldn’t have a bookish blog if I didn’t love it.

More Tag Questions (38)

1. Food & cooking!

Olga used this same¬†answer, well food, in hers but I can’t not use it when food is amazing! I love cooking and I basically never follow a recipe, I just make things up, don’t use measurements or see a recipe and alter it. Some of my favourite things to cook and eat are creamy garlic prawns, marinated pork & noodles, Mac N Cheese Lasagna & my Mum’s spaghetti¬†and meatballs.

I’ll insert a pic below what I made tonight for dinner.

It has butter, garlic, cream, chicken stock, garlic powder, onion flakes, curry powder, mushrooms, prawns & rice.

2. Movies & TV Shows

I love watching tv & movies! At the moment I’m rewatching Supernatural Season 10 as I want to continue with Season 11 & 12. I watched up to the send of season 10 last year on Netflix and was waiting for them to get the newer seasons but they never did and now they have removed Supernatural from the Australian & New Zealand Netflix and will soon be removing it from all the rest as well. Which sucks, so instead of using Netflix I am now downloading them from online. Other TV Shows I love are Orange is the New Black, The 100, That 70s Show, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Mrs Browns Boys & Two Broke Girls.

3. Music

I don’t listen to music as much as I used to, mainly because I use most of my spare time to read but I still listen to music at least once a day. I’m currently loving the new Katy Perry album, mainly Swish Swish, Bon App√©tit & Power

4. Photography

Photography is in my family and I love it. There are only 2 of my 5 cousins that aren’t into photography, the rest of us are and my Mum, Aunty, Uncle & Grandfather. I mainly photograph landscapes & flowers. I occasionally post my photography on my main Instagram (@duskangel222) if you wanted to check it out, there isn’t a lot on there, but some. Oh and if anyone was wondering I use a Canon 750D for my photography but I need to get more lenses as the one I have is the one that came with it and it doesn’t zoom very far in and I just want more out of it, so I will have to buy new ones for it.

5. Animals

I love basically all animals! I own 3 cats, well one is mine the other two are actually my dads. But yeah I have 3 cats, I really want a dog and so does my dad but we have very different ideas of what type of dog I want compared to what he wants. He wants a chihuahua that he can take in his truck with him, he has had 3 over the years and wants another because when he was with my Mum he wasn’t allowed because she hates dogs. Whereas I want a big dog, preferably a Husky as they are my favourite and so gorgeous. ¬†I also wouldn’t mind a Rottie, Labrador or something¬†similar. Our town’s crime rate has gone through the roof and I want a dog that could also be a guard dog. At the moment our neighbour has a Rottie and if he doesn’t know you, you would not step in that yard and if someone comes in our yard he doesn’t know he goes off and has jumped the fence in the past, so with him around I feel better about being home alone with all the ferals that have moved into town. But once I move out I won’t have him around so that’s also another reason I want a dog now, so by the time I move out it would be old enough. But outside of pets I also love wolfs, horses & pandas. I have a wolf tattoo and already kinda know what the next one will be!

More Tag Questions (39)

Yes, there will be Harry Potter involved in this list.

1. Bon Apétit by Katy Perry

2. In the Street (That 70s Show Theme Song) by Cheap Trick

3. Hedwig’s Theme

4. Do the Hippogriff by Patrick Doyle

5. No Diggity by Blackstreet

Larger Heading titles

Because I’ll be doing them every Sunday, I am only going to tag 2 people in each so I’m not tagging the same people all the time! So each week I will tag my latest 2 followers! These will also be only followers that I follow back as well as there is no point in tagging someone I don’t follow.

Top 5 Wednesday – Books Without Romance on my TBR

Header Image (79)

This Meme is hosted by Thoughts On Tomes and the prompts can be found on Goodreads.

This week’s prompt is: Books Without Romance
— A few (very, very few) people complained about the “shipping” topics lately, so I thought it would be good to talk about books that don’t have a romantic subplot! This is a really hard one, so if you can’t find any, you can talk about some where the romance is super super minor. Like barely mentioned… at all…

So I haven’t actually read 5 books without romance or with very little, so I’m going with books on my TBR that are meant to have no romance. I basically just googled ‘YA with no romance’ so if any of this actually have a romance in them then let me know! I haven’t read them yet obviously so I don’t actually know if the no romance part is true.

1. The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
2. Eon by Alison Goodman
3. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
4. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
5. This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

Well that is all for this weeks Top 5 Wednesday!

FURTHERMORE-cover-final-Jan-7-2016 (1)

So I have wanted to get into some middle grade books as I’ve only ever read two and I want to read more. This book sounds like an awesome fantasy book. I actually purchased it a couple days ago with the money Mum gave me for my birthday. It’s not breaking my book buying ban if the money was a gift right? haha

Verdict: KEEP

I’ll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson

sun_375w (1)

This is a diverse book that is also about family. I mainly read diverse books that focus on the LGBTQIA+ side of diversity and I want to read more. I have read a few but not enough and this one sounds really interesting as it is told in the 2 POVs at different times in their life. This book definitely sounds like something I want to try.

Verdict: KEEP

Naughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman

So on the front cover this book is said to be a thriller but the description shouts romance in a dystopian setting. As you may no I’m not a huge fan of romance concentrated books and this screams that it is one.

Verdict: DELETE

Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst

OFAScoverR-678x1024 (1)

It’s so uncommon to find diverse characters in fantasy books. It’s happening more often but there still isn’t enough out there! This book and magic world sounds really interesting and the diversity is just a plus. I’m keen to get to this book!

Verdict: KEEP

Tattoo Atlas by Tim Floreen

There is a lot of diverse books in this post. This one is a Sci-Fi Mystery with a GLBT character. This book sounds really interesting and I have never read a mystery besides Agatha Christie so it would be interesting to read a mystery by another author.

Verdict: KEEP

A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray

So this is mainly on my TBR because of the cover. I do have a copy of this book on my Scribd app. So this book is said to be a crossover of Orphan Black & Cloud Atlas which I don’t know what either is, I have heard of the Orphan Black show but never actually watched it. So from that I don’t know what to expect from that. But the synopsis does sound really interesting. A multi dimensional hunt for a murder? I’m intrigued.

Verdict: KEEP

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Night-Circus-Cover-low-res (1)

This is such a popular book that I want to read it just for that. It does seem to have a strong romance theme but hopefully it won’t be too overpowering to the story. This is a book that I want to give a chance even though it is romance focused as there is so much praise that I want to see for myself if the hype is worth it.

Verdict: KEEP

The Ocean At The End Of The Lane by Neil Gaiman

17026_413852478709121_1163712783_n (1)

So I do want to give a horror book ago and everyone has recommended Neil Gaiman for that! Also this book is really short so it seems like a good place to start in horror. I do already own a copy of this book that I purchased last year but just haven’t got to. The synopsis just makes me so curious to found out what happened to our MC when he was a kid!

Verdict: KEEP

Prisoner of Night and Fog by Anne Blankman

17668473 (1)

I love Historical Fiction books, especially ones set during WWII. This book’s MC is the niece of none other than Adolf Hitler and that is such an interesting POV to come from in a WWII book! There is obviously going to be a romance as a main part of this book but I still want to give this book a go because of everything else! So hopefully it won’t be too much and at least the romance seems to play a legit part in the plot of the story.

Verdict: KEEP

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

I honestly don’t know why this book is on my TBR at all. New Adult Contemporary Romance? Why did I put this on there?! This is so not something I want to read.

Verdict: DELETE

Well that is all for today! Deleted 2!
