Top 8 πŸ“š YA Contemporary Recommendations πŸŽ„ Blogmas Day 12

It’s another Top 8! Today we are talking about YA Contemporary books I loved. This will include both standalones & series but I will only include series that I have read at least 2 books in the series. Let’s jump in!

1. Heartstopper by Alice Oseman

This is one of may favourite graphic novels! It’s just such a fun & cute read and I love it. I know I’m not usually a romance fan but when I feel like reading something cute & romansy I go to Alice Oseman books, which is why there is 3 on this list!

2. Once Upon a Con by Ashley Poston

The Once Upon a Con series is made up of 3 nerdy but contemporary retellings of common fairytales, Cinderella, The Prince and the Pauper & Beauty and the Beast. I’ve only read the first two but I’m really keen to get to book 3! These are fun & nerdy reads! I love contemporaries that have just that little bit more & this one definitely has that with the ExcelsiCon aspect. Definitely recommend!

3. The Brightsiders by Jen Wilde

This is another contemporary that has just that bit more! In this one our main characters is the drummer in a rock band and she is trying to balance life & the band. This one is super diverse with most of the characters being diverse in some way or another. I did also like that this one dealt with some harder topics like parental manipulation, substance abuse & homophobia/transphobia. Overall a really good read!

4. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

The Hate U Give is technically part of a series now but Concrete Rose is a prequel, so I’m still including this one as it can be read alone without any confusion. I also don’t think I need to talk about The Hate U Give too much. It is amazing and so damn important! Highly highly recommend!

5. Radio Silence by Alice Oseman

Another Alice Oseman book! This one is definitely less romance and more just dealing with life. This characters are all amazingly diverse and there is so much discussion on their sexuality & their thoughts & feelings. It’s just amazing. There is all representation for depression which is done very well. Overall this is an amazing story with awesome quotes and an amazing message.

6. Tiffany Sly Lives Here Now by Dana L. Davis

Tiffany Sly Lives Here Now is one of those books that simply aren’t talked about enough! This one follows a POC and deals with mental health as well as family issues. There is so much that happens in this one and it’s an emotional rollercoaster. I was crying & laughing throughout. It was just amazingly written and more people need to read & hype this book!

7. I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman

This one follows multi POV, one of which is the lead of a boy band & the other a girl who is a huge fan. This one also deals with mental health as well as just facing reality. This one also features LGBT characters, which at this point I’m pretty sure all Alice Oseman’s books do. Which is amazing! It should be the norm! I love the band aspect of this one and it just a really good read!

8. I Am Change by Suzy Zail

This book is on the complete other end of contemporary to all the rest in this list and I think it’s extremely important! I Am Change was written based on the stories of 30 Ugandan girls who shared them with the author. It shows the daily & normal life that girls in Uganda have to face. This is not an easy book to read and it deals with some very difficult topics from rape & domestic violence to child brides & genital mutilation. It is not easy but it is extremely important as it shows just how powerful and inspiring a young woman can be!

  1. I really need to read more contemporary! I’ve only read The Hate U Give of the books you’ve mentioned! I always tend to recommend my all-time favourite novel, Looking for Alaska!
