Youtube Channels I loved in 2020! 🎄 Blogmas Day 25

Merry Christmas everyone! Today I will be talking about YouTube channels I have loved this year. These aren’t necessarily ones I am still avidly watching as I tend to only focus on a couple channels at a time. So they change fairly regularly. I’ll talk about BookTube channels first & then talk about other random channels.

Booktube

Books with Chloe

Books with Chloe has been a go to for a long time & I also support her on Patreon, so I do watch most of her videos over there rather than actually on YouTube but of course I had to include her! She is a fellow Aussie & I just love her vibe! I have especially loved her recent Moving Vlogs as they have been making me so excited & hyped to move out early next year. I also especially love her vlogs!

Books with Chloe

BookswithEmilyFox

I love Emily so freaking much! I have been watching her channel for years & I just love every video she puts out. We have the same views on romance in YA books so that is awesome & I also have a pretty similar taste to her, especially when it comes to Sci-Fi books. I also love how genuine and brutally honest she is! Videos where she is ranting about books are my favourites by her!

Recent favourite video posted:

BooksWithEmilyFox

BooksAndLaLa

I go in and out of interest with this channel. I binge watch a heap of her videos in a week and then don’t watch anything for like a month! I still go back though… I recently watched an hour & a half video she posted reading horror books… I don’t even read adult horror & had heard of like 2 of them & didn’t even add any to my TBR BUT I still watched the video!

Background noise for when I’m reading

ASMR Rooms

I love listening to Background music while reading and ASMR Rooms has been my go to for a long time! I love all the Harry Potter & LOTR inspired ones. They are all so beautifully done! I’ll share my favourite below but honourable mentions are Hufflepuff Common Room (original, not remake), Hogwarts Library REMAKE, Waking up in Shell Cottage & Mirkwood

My favourite:

ASMR Rooms

Autumn Cozy

My other go to is Autumn Cozy & while these aren’t HP inspired they are still gorgeous!

My favourite:

Autumn Cozy

Bullet Journalling

AmandaRachLee

This is hands down my favourite Bullet Journalling channel. I watch others on occasion but this is the one I go to for inspiration. I love her spreads & the little doodles she does. I also just like her voice. Which is kinda of random but when you are watching a video that is mostly voice overs, that’s important!

Recent favourite video:

AmandaRachLee

Life Style/Beauty type channels

Safiya Nygaard

There isn’t a time since I discovered Safiya that I haven’t watched Safiya.Even though she doesn’t post as often as she used to I still am always on the look out for her latest video & I occasionally binge rewatch her older stuff.

Recent favourite video:

Safiya Nygaard

Molly Burke

Another one I have been watching for a fair while! I really enjoy Molly’s personality & all her videos. I do love her normal (none blind girl) videos just as much as the videos that are more centred around her being blind & her educating people on blindness. I really enjoy that her videos are fun but also educational & I’ve learnt a lot about blindness & the blind community since I started watching her channel.

Recent favourite:

Molly Burke

SimplyPodLogical/Simply Nailogical

I will talk about these together for obvious reasons. I love Cristine and enjoy every one of the video she puts out on her main channel! But I also love her Podcast style channel. I can just turn it on and have it playing in the background and just listen for hours. I love that it’s somewhat educational as well as just talking about their lives. I really enjoy listening to this one!

Bailey Sarian

Okay yes this is a make up channel, however, I don’t really watch for the make up, though she is good! I 100% watch this channel for her Murder, Mystery & Makeup Monday series! Every Monday she does her make up while talking about a true crime story. Which I find fascinating. I love true crime stories and Bailey just has a way of telling these stories that I really enjoy. I’ve only just discovered this channel is recent months, so I have just been making my way through the playlist.

Doesn’t fit any of the above categories!

Royalty Soaps

I love Katie, I love Kenny, I love this channel! I find watching soap making videos very calming but also this channel is super fun! Katie always has such a good time making these soaps & it comes across in the videos! I also love her brother Kenny, he is just hilarious!

Wrap Up

I read 19 books! 📚October Wrap Up

So in October I participated in GraphicsAThon, so 11 of the 19 books I read where Graphic Novels, 7 were audiobooks & the other 3 where physical reads.
So, let’s jump in!

Graphic Novels

Firstly for graphic novels I read Fence Volume Two & Volume Three by C.S. Pacat, Johanna the Mad & Joana LaFuente. I rated both of these 4.5 stars as they are super fun & also engaging. This series is the lead up to a fencing competition, so you are rooting for certain characters to win & there is a lot of anticipation while reading!

Next I read Pandora’s Legacy by Kara Leopard, Kelly Matthews & Nichole Matthews. These one is about a family’s who responsibility is to look after Pandora’s Box. However, it gets opened and these 3 kids have to return everything that escaped to the box before anyone finds out! This is fun & full of adventure. I ended up rating it 4 stars!

Next I read Volume One, Volume Two & Volume Three of Goldie Vance by Hope Larson, Brittany Williams, Noah Hayes, Jackie Ball, Jim Campbell & Sarah Stern. Goldie Vance is a Mystery Graphic Novel and it very immersive & addicting. I would have read Volume 4 & Larceny in La La Land as well but it became unavailable on Scribd before I could get to it! So maybe this one. I rated all 3 volumes 4.5 stars!

Next I reread The Tea Dragon Society & The Tea Dragon Festival then continued onto The Tea Dragon Tapestry by Katie O’Neill which I had an eARC of! These are just such a cute wholesome series & I’m really sad that it is over. I would easily read another 10 books set in this world or following these characters as it’s just all amazing. I rated all three 5 stars!
The Tea Dragon Society Review
The Tea Dragon Festival Review
The Tea Dragon Tapestry Review

The Avant-Guards: Volume One by Carly Usdin & Noah Hayes is another sports based Graphic Novel. This one we have a girl that moves to a new school and has a group trying to recruit her for a basketball team they are trying to form. This one is very fun and I love this random group of characters! This is another one I would have continued but Scribd made them unavailable. I’m keen to get to the rest of this series! I rated this one 4 stars!

Frankenstein: Junji Ito Story Collection by Junji Ito is a Horror Manga collection. This one I ended up rating 4 stars. This one features:
Frankenstein: 4.5 Stars
Neck Specter, Bog of Living Spirits, Pen Pal, Intruder, The Strange Tale of Oshikiri & The Strange Tale of Oshikiri: The Walls: 4 Stars
The Hell of the Doll Funeral: 3.5 Stars
Face Firmly in Place: 3 Stars
Boss Non-Non & Hide-and-seek with Boss Non-non: 3.5 Stars
So, overall I gave this one a rating of 4 stars. I’m keen to try more stories by Junji Ito!

Audiobook

The Silence of Bones by June Hur is a Mystery book set in 1800 Korea. I loved learning about the culture at that time and I love a good mystery. This one was interesting and keen to read more by the author. I rated it 4.5 stars.

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is another YA mystery and I loved this one! I have a full spoiler free review up for this one and you can find that HERE! I’m so keen to read book 2 when it comes out because I feel like there is more to learn about this mystery!

This was my least favourite read of the month. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia was slow & also the twist was very confusing. It didn’t make a lot of sense and I felt like it was a little ridiculous really. There were so many better ways this book could have gone. I ended up rating this one 3 stars but I have debated downgrading that to 2.5 stars. I’m not sure.

Physical/eBook

I reread Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys in October and loved it even more this time! This is a hard hitting WWII story that is very emotional and beautifully written. You can find my spoiler free review HERE!

FINALLY!!! They finally released Memento by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff in eBook & Audiobook form so I had to read it straight away! This one follows AIDAN in the events leading up to Illuminae. This was awesome & I rated it 5 stars!

Lastly I read Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare which is a Slasher thriller and it was a tonne of fun. The only downfall with this one was the reveal at the end.. It just didn’t really make sense and the motive was a push. I rated this one 4 stars.

Let’s Chat!

What was your favourite read from October?!
Mine would be The Inheritance Games for audiobook & The Tea Dragon Tapestry for Graphic Novel. Of course Salt to the Sea is a favourite but as it’s a reread I thought I’d let the new books have a chance.

Last Year I Was Reading… 💫 #4 📚 Blogtober #1

So, I’m joining a weekly feature that is kind of like a Throwback Thursday! Last Year I Was Reading… was created by ReadingMaria!

Take your current read and compare it to what you reading this exact time last year. Which one do you like better? What is different about the books? Any special facts/things you want to make note of or bring attention to? Be sure to link it back to my blog so I can see them!

This Year I Am Reading…

The Silence of Bones by June Hur

I am currently 30% into The Silence of Bones and I am super intrigued by the plot and very keen for the murder mystery to be revealed! I am really enjoying this one so far and hopefully that continues.

Last Year I Was Reading…

Tiger Queen by Annie Sullivan

Tiger Queen was good but also a very forgettable book. I remember liking it and I vaguely remember the big end scene but VAGUELY. I also remember that I didn’t review it straight away and left it a couple weeks and then literally couldn’t remember what I liked or disliked about. So yeah, definitely didn’t leave an impression.

I think I’m enjoying The Silence of Bones more than I did Tiger Queen. It’s a super engaging story and really dragging me in! So I’m loving it and keen to continue!

This Year I Am Reading…

Misfit City: Vol 2 by Kirsten Smith, Kurt Lustgarten & Naomi Franquiz

This year I am reading Misfit City: Vol 2 and loved it! The Misfit City Graphic Novels are so fun, kinda creepy and full of action. I have loved the whole thing and just had so much fun reading them!

Last Year I Was Reading…

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling

This time last year I was listening to the audiobook of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This was of course a reread for me and I obviously love this book!

It’s hard to compare anything to Harry Potter, so while I did love Misfit City, of course I loved Harry Potter more. Harry Potter is my all time favourite series, so it doesn’t really compare. I do highly recommend Misfit City though!!

Graphic Novel Recommendations

Today we are going to be talking about 10 Graphic Novels that I think you should check out!
All of these except 1 I have read more than 1 volume of (except the ones that are just one book) so I feel like I have read enough to give you are proper recommendation!
So, let’s jump in!

1. The Backstagers

I have read Vol 1 & Vol 2 of The Backstagers but am yet to read Vol 3. The backstagers is a fun action packed contemporary with a hidden magical world behind the curtains! Our main character transfers to an all boys school where he doesn’t feel like he fits in. Until he finds his place as part of the Backstagers and discovers this hidden underground world.
Highly recommend if you are after a fun & fantasy read!

2. Heartstopper by Alice Oseman

I have read Heartstopper Volume 1, Volume 2 & Volume 3. Volume 4 is set to release Feb 2021!
This is a cute LGBT+ romance and it is just such a fun and wholesome read! This also follows characters that feature in some of Alice Oseman’s other books, so if you love her other books then it’s definitely worth checking it out!
Highly recommend if you are looking for a cute & very quick Graphic Novel.

3. Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker & Wendy Xu

Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker & Wendy Xu

Mooncakes is such a gorgeous stand alone Graphic Novel! This one is a YA Fantasy and features a tonne of representation. The main character lives with her Lesbian Witch Grandmothers and wears a hearing aid. There is also a female/female romance featured! So plenty of rep for such a short story!
Mooncakes follows Nova who lives and works at her grandmothers bookshop. She goes to investigate sightings of a white wolf in the woods only to discover her childhood crush, Tam, a werewolf, battling a horse demon. Tam turns to Nova for help against dark forces which are after her wolf magic.
I highly recommend checking out Mooncakes if you are after a LGBT+ witchy fantasy book!

4. Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell & Faith Erin Hicks

Pumpkinheards by Rainbow Rowell & Faith Erin Hicks

This is another super fun read! Pumpkinheads is a standalone contemporary and perfect for the autumn (fall) season.
This one follows Deja & Josiah on their last shift at the Pumpkin Patch where they have been working every autumn of high school. Josiah wants to spend the night feeling melancholy about it being their last shift but Deja comes up with a plan that involves seeing every sight & tasting every snack!
If you are looking for a fun, wholesome & autumn feeling read then this is definitely the one for you!

5. Misfit City

I have read Misfit City: Vol 1 and loved it and I’m hoping to read Vol 2 this month!
Misfit City is a kinda creepy adventure story where the characters go on the hunt to find pirate treasure.
I highly recommend this if you need an adventure which is a little creepy. This is another one that would be good for the autumn season as it’s got those creepy elements!

6. Heavy Vinyl

I have read Heavy Vinyl: Riot on the Radio but I didn’t know until brainstorming for this video that there is actually now a follow up book called Heavy Vinyl: Y2K-0!. So I will be going and reading that one soon! I do highly recommend the first one though!
This one follows Chris who has just joined the staff of a local record store. The staff’s favourite singer mysteriously disappears the night before a big show in town and Chris learns that the record shore is just a front for a teen girl vigilante fight club!
This is just such a cool idea and I loved every minute. This is a mystery and is super action packed & fun to read.

7. Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Promise

I don’t think I need to describe this one. As far as I know this follows the events of the TV show, so if you love the Avatar Show then I highly recommend picking this one up!

8. The Wicked + The Divine

This one is an Adult Fantasy series that is a tad brutal & intense.
The Wicked + The Divine follows 12 gods incarnate as humans. That is literally all you need to know! This series is amazing but as it is adult it has some sexual and gory content that could be troubling for some readers, so be careful.

9. Giant Days

Giant Days is a Fun YA Contemporary that is about three girls that make fast friends when they start University. This series follows the chaos that is their life in university. It’s funny, action packed and crazy.

10. The Complete MAUS by Art Spiegelman

MAUS is a Historical Non-Fiction story that follows the life of Art Spiegelman’s grandfather during the Holocaust as a Jewish man. This is a hard hitting but amazing story but it’s definitely not an easy read. There is no sugar coating things in the story and I love that about it. I also love the art style and that the illustrator used different animals to represent different groups (jews, Germans, Pols, Russians, etc.). This made it easy to follow and understand.
I highly recommend this book if you are a looking for a WWII Historical book!

The Shadows Between Us 💫 Spoiler Free Review

Title: The Shadows Between Us
Author: Tricia Levenseller
Genre: YA Fantasy
Publication Date: February 25th, 2020
Pages: 326
Publishers: Feiwel & Friends
Rating:

4.5 Stars

Goodreads Synopsis

Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:

1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

The Shadows Between Us book cover – Silver sword in the centre with red stones in the handle surrounded by a black design & a red background.

Firstly I want to address the romance in this book. As yall may know I am not a fan of romance in books and I went into this book literally knowing NOTHING about it. So by the time I realised this was going to be a romance I was already fully hooked on this story! In the end the romance actually didn’t worry me at all. So that was a bit different for me. Anyway onto the actual review!

This book hooked me from the very beginning! After the first chapter I knew I was going to enjoy this book. I was already so invested in Alessandra’s story & this world.

I love that this is a standalone as standalone fantasy is rare to find, especially good ones that don’t feel like they are missing something. I also kinda wish there was a second book because I wanna know what goes down after the events of The Shadows Between Us. I am happy with how it ended but I love this world and characters so of course I want more.

As I have already mentioned I really enjoyed the characters. Alessandra was a super interesting character and I loved seeing her grow throughout the book. She was also a bit of a badass which I really enjoyed too. Kallais was also interesting and mysterious and I enjoyed seeing him grow and open up to Alessandra. Both characters were very well written and developed really well. The side characters were also very well written and fleshed out! No one felt two dimensional which was great.

This book was very unpredictable except for the overall outcome of the romance. I guessed that pretty early but how we got to that point was unexpected. The plot was super well written and I enjoyed it the whole time. I was hooked and couldn’t wait to see what would happen next.

Overall I really enjoyed this one and can highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, intense & interesting romance. I am definitely looking forward to seeing what Tricia Levenseller comes out with next as so far I have been a fan!

Beat the Bingo ReadAThon TBR!

So, I’ve been extremely inactive on my blog lately. Between Biannual Bibliothon, MedievalAThon & The Reading Rush I have been super busy & next month is probably going to be the same. I will be participating in NEWTs Edition of Magical ReadAThon (Month long), Beat the Bingo ReadAThon (Month long) & the Harry Potter Edition of Fantasy JourneyAThon (10th – 19th)!

Beat the Bingo ReadAThon is taking place over in the Facebook Group The YA Book Nerds which I run. You can join the group HERE!

I have chosen books for all the challenges except for the ‘Previous YA Book Nerds BOTM’ because as the organiser of the group I have read all the Group Books as I was the one that choose them & made the discussion questions. So I’ve just left this as a free choice for myself.
