ScallyWagAThon TBR

Header Image (12).jpg

Okay, so I am utterly fucking crazy! This will be ReadAThon number 4 in November. You can find my #HouseCupReadingChallenge TBR HERE & Read-A-Thin HERE if you wanted to know about those. My TBR for Duodecathon will be up closer to the dates of it.

Okay, so as this was a late announcement and it didn’t make it onto my November Reading Guide till about half an hour ago I am going to put all the info below. I’ll just copy and paste it straight from my guide! If you already know then just skip the the ‘My TBR’ header.

Blog Title (28)

Okay, so this is a really fun looking ReadAThon and I’m thinking about adding it into my crazy November!!

This ReadAThon starts at midnight on the 5th of November & ends at 11:59 on the 11th of November. There is alsoa Pirates of the Caribbean WatchALong happening from the 12th to the 18th.

You can watch Ali’s video HERE for a whole in depth desrciption of the ReadAThon along with an example TBR but I am going to try and explain it!

Firstly, the map!

*This was taken from the link in Ali’s video.*

scallywagathon

Okay, so how this map works is firstly you pick a number between 1 & 5. Once you pick your starting point you follow the corresponding coloured line to the next challenge. Most of them have more than one option you can choose from. Then when you get to your first stop you then follow that number or letter’s correspoding coloured line to the next challenge until you get to the treasure chest. All of the tracks you take will have 4 challenges but if you finish those 4 in the week you are welcome to continue onto any of the other challenges you wish.
So, here is an example of how to navigate the map. I am going to start at 1, from there I will follow the dark purple line to 6, from there I will follow the orange line to A and then from A I will follow the dark blue line to 9 and then to the treasure! Hopefully that makes sense.

When you complete the 4 challenges you can enter your email in the link on Ali’s video to get some free printables from Ali!

Okay, next is the Pirates of the Caribbean WatchALong. Here is a calendar that can be downloaded from the link in Ali’s video. It has the dates on the sides for each of the movie WatchALongs. However follow Ali on Twitter as she will be announcing closer to the date the times that they will be watching each movie.

scallywagathon (1)

And finally she is holding a giveaway! All you have to do is post your TBR to either YouTube, Blog or Tumblr and leave the link in the comments of Ali’s video. Also make sure you leave a way for Ali to contact you in your TBR post.

This is the BOTM for my facebook group The YA Book Nerds. This hasn’t actually been announced as the voting doesn’t end for a little while yet but as it has more than double the amount of votes that the other options, I would say it’s going to win!

warcross_030717 (1)

This is the Life & Lit BOTM!

This is the only 2 BOTMs I am doing so far out of the ones I know about. Life & Lit has said their second book too but I read that book in October and that was Stalking Jack the Ripper. YA Book Club and Book Talk also has said theirs too but it’s a book I’m not interested in.

Blog Title (24)

Blog Title (26)

These are the books that if I finish the BOTMs & the books in the ‘Other Reads’ section I will pick up some of these.

Blog Title (25)

Beastly is kind of an extra read too, the other three will have a preference but if I finish them I will start it.

That is it for my ridiculous TBR! Not included my ‘extra reads’  I will be reading 9 books and 3 audiobooks. In total it is 15 books and 4 audiobooks! Wish me luck!

So this is just going to be a short spoiler free review. I 100% think this is a book that you just need to jump into and figure out on your own, so that is why I this is just a mini review.

As for the writing, it was so well written. The entire time you were left guessing with absolutely no clues as to who is the real bad guy until the Bayview Four start doing their own investigating and start bringing up clues. This book hooked me so much, it was so suspenseful when it came to finding out who killed Simon! I didn’t want to put it down.

The plot is really good too! Not predictable at all! When you start suspecting one person there is something that pops up that changes your mind. The whole time you are just shuffling around in your mind who it could be. Very well done mystery book! And also, that bloody ending!!!!

Overall, I loved it! It was so well written and I never wanted to put it down! It was suspenseful and mysterious and just an amazing debut from Karen M. McManus and I can’t wait to see what she does next!!

A new adventure about a girl who is fated to wash the bodies of the dead in this companion to Furthermore.

Our story begins on a frosty night…

Laylee can barely remember the happier times before her beloved mother died. Before her father, driven by grief, lost his wits (and his way). Before she was left as the sole remaining mordeshoor in the village of Whichwood, destined to spend her days washing the bodies of the dead and preparing their souls for the afterlife. It’s become easy to forget and easier still to ignore the way her hands are stiffening and turning silver, just like her hair, and her own ever-increasing loneliness and fear.

But soon, a pair of familiar strangers appears, and Laylee’s world is turned upside down as she rediscovers color, magic, and the healing power of friendship.

Well, that is it! What release are you anticipating in November?! Let me know in the comments.

When BFFs Charlie, Taylor and Jamie go to SupaCon, they know it’s going to be a blast. What they don’t expect is for it to change their lives forever.

Charlie likes to stand out. SupaCon is her chance to show fans she’s over her public breakup with co-star, Reese Ryan. When Alyssa Huntington arrives as a surprise guest, it seems Charlie’s long-time crush on her isn’t as one-sided as she thought.

While Charlie dodges questions about her personal life, Taylor starts asking questions about her own.

Taylor likes to blend in. Her brain is wired differently, making her fear change. And there’s one thing in her life she knows will never change: her friendship with Jamie—no matter how much she may secretly want it to. But when she hears about the Queen Firestone SupaFan Contest, she starts to rethink her rules on playing it safe.

Absolutely love it! I have had hair a very similar colour so as soon as I saw this cover back at the start of the year I wanted to pick it up.

This was the only photo I could find when I had full pick hair. So, yes is it a pretty crappy photo, but oh well. Also, when I sent it from my phone to my mac the colouring went kinda off too, on the mac it makes it look really bright and it kinda lost the actual strands of my hair and just looks like a big pink blob. Hopefully, that is just my computer doing that and it looks normal to you guys.. Gotta love technology.

Blog Title (11)

Okay, so I have one major issue with this book. I am Aussie and so is the author. Also, so is 2 of the main characters and the third is a former American that now lives in Aus.
But it is clear that this book was written to appeal to the American audience. Why do I say that you aks?? Well while I was reading I came across a couple things that are not accurate to Australians. For one thing, the spelling of COLOUR! They used the American spelling COLOR in this book, which really irritated me.
The second major thing is the word FRIES! I have never heard any Aussie call them Fries, we call them CHIPS! So please explain to me why exactly does in the book Charlie walk into the room and say “Do I smell fries?” and also in Taylor’s head she calls them fries. I would understand if it was Jamie calling them fries, as I said he is a former American. But why would the two girls that are meant to be born and raised in Aus? It just doesn’t make sense and it frustrated the hell out of me. As an Aussie myself I don’t agree with using words that suit another country when you are trying to represent your own! I would have let it slide if it was a non-Aussie author, but come on!

I was so annoyed with this that I was actually putting it on my insta story. Here are 2 of those pics.

Anyway, that little rant over. Besides that, I did enjoy the rest of the writing. This book was honestly one of my quickest reads, I feel like. It took me a total of 4hrs and 15mins to read this book. Which just felt crazy, I literally read it overnight!

Blog Title (12)

I  enjoyed the plot of this book even if it was a little predictable, but to me the majority of contemporaries I have read are predictable. So I don’t really judge them on that.
But still, I enjoyed it and I really enjoyed the whole Queen Firestone thing. Skyler Atkins is definitely the J.K. Rowling of that world.

There isn’t much I can say as like I said it’s kinda predictable and fairly standard for a YA contemporary.

Blog Title (13)

I love the diversity in this book! Charlie is an Asian-Australia Bisexual and Taylor has social anxiety and is on the autism spectrum. I can’t speak about the rep for autism and anxiety as I don’t have either of those things. However, as a bisexual, I did enjoy the bisexual rep and thought it was really well done.
I especially liked when Charlie had an argument with her ex-boyfriend when he said he doesn’t believe in bisexuals as I have literally had the same conversation with my best friends mum when discussing the Marriage Equality vote that is happening in Aus atm. #voteyes

As for Taylor, I can’t speak of the rep as I already said but I did really enjoy her. It was good seeing her develop and come to accept the things she has to deal with and trying new things.

I also really liked Jamie, he was interesting, fun, flirty and obviously paid a lot of attention to his best friends as he could read them really well and knew when something was off.

Charlie was really cool too. She a bit more bold but was kinda struggling too and again it was really good seeing her develop and adapt to what has been happening in her life.

Reese was an ass! It’s as simple as that. Cheating is never okay! I don’t give a damn what excuses you try and swing. He was up himself and a jerk. If I had of been Tay in that scene at the party I would have kicked him in the balls and punched him in the nose. Give him an actual reason to call me her a ‘bitch’. But that’s just me haha.

I really enjoyed Mandy, at first I thought she might have played the annoying manager roll but that was not the case. She was pretty fun really.

Brianna was a really interesting character too. It was good seeing that even someone who usually doesn’t suffer from any of those issues can have it sneak up on them. I really liked how Taylor dealt with it and help her out and they basically instantly became friends purely because they both liked Queen Firestone.

Josie was also a nice addition to the story and another diverse character. I’m pretty sure she suffered from the same things as Taylor, anxiety & on the Autism spectrum. Having a character come in that has the same issues and is overcoming them and could give Taylor some good advice was a great addition and really helped Taylor develop.

Blog Title (14)

I really enjoyed the book. It was a fun and easy read and also a cute diverse contemporary. Besides that big issue I had I really enjoyed the writing. The plot was a bit predictable, but I find most contemporaries predictable so it didn’t really bother me. I love the characters, they were all written really well and I even enjoyed Reese as a character as he was written well and represents a large group of people even if he wasn’t nice, he was necessary.
Overall a really good book.

Don’t miss this exciting short story that connects The Darkest Minds to its much-anticipated sequel, Never Fade

Gabe’s life has been devastated in the wake of the economic crash. The only option left for someone like him to escape his tragic past is to leave his small town behind and to attempt to become a skiptracer. This already almost impossible task is made all the more difficult by his first score, a young girl who won’t speak, but who changes his life in ways he could never imagine.

This book is the prequel to Never Fade and comes between The Darkest Minds and Never Fade. It doesn’t follow one of the characters we know, which I enjoyed! Seeing this from a whole new perspective was really interesting, especially from the perspective of someone older than Ruby and the Psi ‘kids’. It also helped as I waited until just before I read Never Fade to read this rather than back when I read The Darkest Minds, so it made for a good way to get back into the world before diving into Never Fade. It also fills in a bit of a blank about one of the character’s whereabouts too. I highly recommend reading this before Never Fade if you haven’t read it yet!

Ruby never asked for the abilities that almost cost her her life. Now she must call upon them on a daily basis, leading dangerous missions to bring down a corrupt government and breaking into the minds of her enemies. Other kids in the Children’s League call Ruby “Leader”, but she knows what she really is: a monster.

When Ruby is entrusted with an explosive secret, she must embark on her most dangerous mission yet: leaving the Children’s League behind. Crucial information about the disease that killed most of America’s children—and turned Ruby and the others who lived into feared and hated outcasts—has survived every attempt to destroy it. But the truth is only saved in one place: a flashdrive in the hands of Liam Stewart, the boy Ruby once believed was her future—and who now wouldn’t recognize her.

As Ruby sets out across a desperate, lawless country to find Liam—and answers about the catastrophe that has ripped both her life and America apart—she is torn between old friends and the promise she made to serve the League. Ruby will do anything to protect the people she loves. But what if winning the war means losing herself?

Never-Fade-by-Alexandra-Bracken

You can find my review for The Darkest Minds HERE and I would suggest reading it before this review as my thoughts haven’t changed and I don’t feel the need to explain myself twice, saying the same thing.

Blog Title (10)

The cover of this book did not make sense to me until just now! Well, I’m guessing that it’s meant to represent Jude’s Compass.
Even those these covers aren’t as nice to look at as other I still like them as they simply represent different parts of the book. The first book has the Psi symbol and this one has Jude’s compass. The last book has a Crescent Moon which I’m guessing we will learn the meaning of in book 3.

Blog Title (11)

My thoughts on the writing in Never Fade are the same as they were for The Darkest Minds! I still would like a map so I could easily follow the travel in the book! But again I’m guessing they didn’t bother as it was only set in America, not a made-up world.

This book as a bit slow to read. I don’t mean that the plot was slow, but the actual book. It took me a lot longer to read that other 500 page books have taken me. As I’m not using BookOut I can accurately see how much time exactly I have been reading each book and this one took me a total of 12 hours and normally a 500 page book takes about 7-8hrs. At the start, it kinda felt like I was reading and getting nowhere. After about 60% though it felt like it picked up, I think that was because there was more happening in the book and it distracted me from how long it was taking me to read the book.

I recently read Zero Repeat Forever and my mind was mixing them up when it came to where the Head Quarters was located. In Zero Repeat Forever it’s underground in the mountains and in this one it’s underground as well and I kept thinking of the location from Zero Repeat Forever when HQ was mentioned in this book! It was quite confusing..

Blog Title (12)

These books are very action packed and never has a dull moment!
That plot twist at the end though! Actually, there were 2 big shocks right at the end that I was not expecting! Well, to be honest, this whole book was unpredictable, I would think I knew what would happen and was completely wrong! Every time!

Blog Title (13)

My view of Ruby & Clancy hasn’t changed. I still like Ruby and I still hate Clancy.

It’s hard to talk about any of the returning characters really without spoilers for both this book and the end of The Darkest Minds. So I’m not going to talk about them.

Jude was really sweet, but he was also really shy but never quiet! I really enjoyed him as a character and it was good seeing a character that showed their fear, it added that bit of realisticness around Ruby & Vida.
Vida was awesome too! At the start, she was a bit of a bitch but she is fierce and stubborn. Sometimes she let her anger get the better of her but still, she is a badass!
Cole was a bit of a jerk really. He acted so full of himself most of the time and the ‘jokes’ acting like no female could resist him, that really pisses me off.

Blog Title (14)

I really enjoyed this book, a bit better even than The Darkest Minds. The writing is great as always and the world and world building are amazing. The plot was great and so action packed! The characters are mostly great excluding Cole whose personality just irritated me and also obviously excluding the ‘bad guys’. Overall an Amazing book and addition to the series!

The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding by Alexandra Bracken – Spoiler Free Review

Genre: Middle Grade Fantasy

“I would say it’s a pleasure to meet thee, Prosperity Oceanus Redding, but truly, I only anticipate the delights of destroying thy happiness.”

Prosper is the only unexceptional Redding in his old and storied family history — that is, until he discovers the demon living inside him. Turns out Prosper’s great-great-great-great-great-something grandfather made — and then broke — a contract with a malefactor, a demon who exchanges fortune for eternal servitude. And, weirdly enough, four-thousand-year-old Alastor isn’t exactly the forgiving type.

The fiend has reawakened with one purpose — to destroy the family whose success he ensured and who then betrayed him. With only days to break the curse and banish Alastor back to the demon realm, Prosper is playing unwilling host to the fiend, who delights in tormenting him with nasty insults and constant attempts trick him into a contract. Yeah, Prosper will take his future without a side of eternal servitude, thanks.

Little does Prosper know, the malefactor’s control over his body grows stronger with each passing night, and there’s a lot Alastor isn’t telling his dim-witted (but admittedly strong-willed) human host.

From #1 New York Times best-selling author Alexandra Bracken comes a tale of betrayal and revenge, of old hurts passed down from generation to generation. Can you ever fully right a wrong, ever truly escape your history? Or will Prosper and Alastor be doomed to repeat it?

I really like the cover of this book. It’s simple but also has that bit of detail around the mirror so it’s not too plain. I like that they choose to show Al’s form instead of Prosper himself as I don’t like books with people on them. I also really like the little drawing of Toad on the back cover.

This is my 3rd Alexandra Bracken book and I can’t fault her writing. This book did feel easier to read than the other two books by her I have read (Passenger & The Darkest Minds), but I’m assuming that is because this is a Middle Grade. I liked that though as it made for a quick read.

So at the end of this story, I felt like the whole book was kinda leading up to book 2. Does that make sense?
Like there was a big plot point thing that happened at the end and all these secrets get revealed but it still all feels like it is just setting up for the next book. Which I don’t mind, but as there isn’t even a release date for book 2 it is a little frustrating but that can’t be helped.

The plot of this book was a heap of little plot points all through the book rather than 1 or 2 big things that happened. Which was enjoyable as it kept me interested for the whole book and there wasn’t any dull points.

Prosper was an interesting character. He was kind and just wanted to be accepted and not bullied and there is nothing wrong with that! He was a tad too trusting in my opinion but he learnt the hard way with that one.

Nell was an okay character, not a favouite though. She was a little dramatic at times and a bit annoying. But she was also passionate and I didn’t mind her.

I didn’t really like Uncle B. He was kinda all over the place actually. Stubborn and cranky some of the time and then overly kind and nice the other half of the time. He was just irritating.

Alastor was actually really fun. Obviously, he was ‘evil’ but he was also sarcastic and sassy and I found it hilarious a lot of the time. He was a little frustrating when it came to who’s side he was on but still an enjoyable ‘bad guy’.

I really enjoyed this series. The writing is great and the world building is really good. The plot was well done and kept me hooked the whole time! I don’t love all the characters but I think they were meant to be questionable characters so that didn’t worry me. I can’t wait to read book 2 but as we don’t even have a release date who knows how long it will be until we have book 2!

Before

Mira Minkoba is the Hopebearer. Since the day she was born, she’s been told she’s special. Important. Perfect. She’s known across the Fallen Isles not just for her beauty, but for the peace treaty named after her, an agreement which united the seven islands against their enemies on the mainland.

But Mira never felt perfect. She counts compulsively. She struggles with crippling anxiety. And she’s far too interested in dragons for a girl of her station.

After

Then Mira discovers an explosive secret that challenges everything she and the treaty stand for. Betrayed by the very people she spent her life serving, Mira is sentenced to the Pit—the deadliest prison in the Fallen Isles. There, a cruel guard would do anything to discover the secret she would die to protect.

No longer beholden to those who betrayed her, Mira must learn to survive on her own and unearth the dark truths about the Fallen Isles—and herself—before her very world begins to collapse.

I still don’t like covers with people on them but you can’t deny that this book is gorgeous. I love the colours of the cover and how dark it feels. I also love the back cover! The forest/woods with the dragon’s tail is so simple but represents the book really well.

This is my first Jodi Meadows book and I have heard pretty good things about her writing and I was not disappointed. For a 500 page book this was fairly quick. There were parts in the middle that was a bit slow but they were building the characters personalities and also the characters’ friendships, so they were needed and worth it.

I also really enjoyed the swap of past and future in the 2/3 or so of the book. It was good to have a break from those slower parts and it was also good to see what happened to Mira rather than just hearing it her thoughts and convos.

So even though the basis of this plot is fairly basic, it was done really well that it didn’t feel like ‘just another …….. book’. The whole book felt like it was building to a certain event and then there was something that happened about 3/4 of the way in that threw a spanner in the works and I no longer knew what to expect. I liked that this book had those unpredictable bits, however, there were some parts that were predictable too.

Mira was an enjoyable character. Even though she was kinda the ‘chosen one’ trope she felt a lot more realistic than most. She struggled most of the time to figure out what was wrong and right and what she should do. Also, the anxiety played a pretty big part of her life while in the pit which made her feel more real too. Even with all the struggles, she was still a strong character and I really enjoyed her.

Ilina & Hristo were also enjoyable characters. We mostly see them in the chapters that show the past. Hristo is loyal and caring & Ilina is passionate and strong. They would both do anything for what is right and their best friend.

Gerel was a pain, but the kind of enjoyable pains that you can’t help but like despite yourself. She was stubborn but smart and but also loyal to what she believes in and the promises she has made to the Fallen Isles. Aaru I still don’t know how I feel really. He is shy and quiet but also kind and interesting.

Altan is a pathetic person. He is one of those cruel characters that you aren’t meant to like. Even though he knew why Mira was in prison and knew it was a load of bull he still acting like she was no better than a murderer. It was pathetic considering he wanted the information she held.

Elbena, was also cruel. Again acting like Mira was at fault when it was actually her and her people that were doing the wrong thing. And delibertly allowing  a certain thing to happen just so she could turn the situation to fit her needs! In that moment, if I was there I would have strangled her. So much outright curelty.

I loved this book! It is an amazing start to a new fantasy series! The writing is amazing and I loved he use of chapters from the past and future. The main character is great and so are her friends! The plot is really well done and the world is amazing! I can’t wait for book 2 to be released! The only thing this book is missing is a map! This would be the perfect book to have a map in!
