Goodreads Synopsis

If you trust her you’ll never make it home…
Avery is an exceptional child. Everything he does is precise, from the way he washes his face in the morning, to the way he completes his homework – without complaint, without fuss, without prompt.

Zib is also an exceptional child, because all children are, in their own way. But where everything Avery does and is can be measured, nothing Zib does can possibly be predicted, except for the fact that she can always be relied upon to be unpredictable.

They live on the same street.
They live in different worlds.

On an unplanned detour from home to school one morning, Avery and Zib find themselves climbing over a stone wall into the Up and Under – an impossible land filled with mystery, adventure and the strangest creatures.

And they must find themselves and each other if they are to also find their way out and back to their own lives.”

So, I loved the Wayward Children‘s series and while I did enjoy this one it did not live up to my expectations. Wayward Children was interesting, thrilling, mysterious & so freaking unique and I just loved it. Over the Woodward Wall just didn’t quite hit that mark. It’s still 4 stars but definitely not what I expect from Seanan McGuire.

I think my main issue was I couldn’t connect with the characters. I don’t know if thats a me issue, because its middle grade or what but I just felt no connection with them. I did really enjoy the Crow Girl and I think I enjoyed her more than the 2 main characters actually. So that was annoying. I’m sorry to keep comparing this to Wayward Children but I was so invested in this characters from the very start, so to feel such a disconnect with these characters was disappointing.

This book gave me Alice in Wonderland & Wizard of Oz vibes, both of which I enjoy the story of but they aren’t my favourites. Especially the similarities with Alice in Wonderland where absolutely nothing makes sense and the author just did things because she can and not because there is a reason. I’m just not a huge fan of that aspect. I like to learn and understand things about the world. So while this world was unique and king of interesting it also frustrated me that nothing much made sense.

I did find the story unpredictable, action packed and generally engaging. So that is the main reason for my higher rating. I enjoyed the overall experience but there were a few things that annoyed me a little. And again, I had high expectations based on what I have previously read by Seanan McGuire (both Wayward Children & Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day) and this one just didn’t quite live up to it in my opinion!

October 📚 Most Anticipated Releases

Today I will be talking about the books that I am keen for that are releasing in October 2020! I only have a few this month, so let’s jump in.

6th October

Kingdom of Sea and Stone by Mara Rutherford

Firstly we have Kingdom of Sea and Stone which is the sequel to Crown of Coral and Pearl which I read as an eARC and LOVED! I am super keen to get my hands on this one and see what happens next in this series.
Crown of Coral and Pearl follows Nor who lives on town on the ocean. The most beautiful girl in the town is intended to marry the crown prince which will likely with Zadie, Nor’s twin sister. Until Zadie is gravely injured and Nor is sent in her place. There are a lot more secrets and lies than expected and Nor has to navigate this to save her town.

Over the Woodward Wall by A. Deborah Baker

Next we have Over the Woodward Wall which is the first book in a new Middle Grade series. This cover definitely what caught my eye but the synopsis also sounds super fun. I’m also into more fun kind of reads at the moment and I feel like this would be perfect for that.
Over the Woodward Wall follows two points of view, Avery who is very precise & Zib who is very unpredictable. They accidentally find themselves in a new world after climbing over a stone wall and they must find themselves and each other in order to return to their own world.

13th October

A Golden Fury by Samantha Cohoe

A Gold Fury is one I have an eARC for so I’m hoping to get to it in the coming weeks! This is a standalone YA Historical Fantasy and again the cover definitely interested me for this one. It also sounds really good so I am definitely keen to read it soon!
A Golden Fury follows Thea who longs to be an Alchemist. Thea and her mother are attempting to create a Philosopher’s Stone but then before they are finished her mother destroys it. Thea then learns that the stone is cursed and will send anyone who attempts to create it insane.

Beyond the Ruby Veil by Mara Fitzgerald

Beyond the Ruby Veil is another one with a super interesting cover and it actually gives me Alice in Wonderland vibes with the red rose in the corner. I don’t believe it’s related though. This one is the first book in a new YA fantasy series. There is also LGBT+ representation so I am definitely keen for that!

A dark, queer YA fantasy that’s perfect for fans of the Three Dark Crowns series and Wicked Saints. After Emanuela Ragno kills the one person in Occhia who can create water, she must find a way to save her city from dying of thirst.

20th October

Among the Beasts & Briars by Ashley Poston

I love Ashley Poston’s work, so of course this is on my October Anticipate Releases!! Among the Beasts & Briars is a standalone YA Fantasy and I am so keen! I’m really interested to read this one because so far Ashley Poston has not released a Fantasy so I am so curious to see what world se creates!

In Among the Beasts & Briars we follow Cerys who is the daughter of a gardener for the royal palace. She is forced to flee after dangers enter the kingdom from the woods. It is up to her & her companions, a small fox, a powerful bear & her own magic, to find the Lady of the Wilds and save her Kingdom.

27th October

Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco

Lastly we have Kingdom of the Wicked. While I am keen to read this one I’m also a little worried as I didn’t love the Stalking Jack the Ripper series as a whole. I really enjoyed the first 2 books but as the romance overtook the plot in the last two books I started loosing interest. I loved the first two books for the mystery but the mystery ended up feeling like a side plot in the last two books which was super disappointing. I’m worried the same thing will happen here as there is ‘an intoxicating romance’ according to the synopsis…
Kingdom of the Wicked follows Emilia who is a Streghe, a witch. She finds her twin sister brutally murdered and sets out to seek vengeance. She meets Wrath, a Prince of Hell who claims to be on her side.

Let’s Chat!

Well those are the books I am super keen for that release in October! Are you keen for any of these or what other book are you most looking forward to?
I’m definitely looking forward to Kingdom of Sea and Salt the most!
