Calling Aussie Book Bloggers!

logo_Aussie-Aussie-Aussie-Tee-Thumb-1000x1000

I am currently organising an Australian themed ReadAThon for October!

I’m looking for fellow Aussies to help me cohost the ReadAThon!
I have posted this a couple places but realised that I didn’t even post it on my blog to see if any of you would like to help!

You do not have to be Aussie to participate but I would like all Aussies as the cohosts.

The whole thing will be based on Australian Stereotypes. The ReadAThon will be 8 days (12th – 19th of October) and will have 8 optional reading challenges to choose from.
There is also an Aussie Themed Book Tag to go along with it for the book bloggers & book tubers! The tag is also based on Stereotypes and is called the ‘Shrimp on the Barbie Book Tag’.

aussie-map-stereotypes

Just in case anyone was iffy about joining because they don’t know what being a cohost means, here are some of the things you will need to do:
– Participate in the ReadAThon (You don’t have to complete all 8 challenges, just do the best you can)
– Post an announcement for the ReadAThon to let others know it is happening & all the info (all the info will be provided)
– Post your TBR for the ReadAThon
– Post the Shrimp on the Barbie Book Tag on the 1st day of the ReadAThon
– Help with Twitter sprints
*If you don’t use Twitter this isn’t necessary however there will be a dedicated Twitter account for the ReadAThon so even if you don’t have an account you can still do the sprints if you want. But I know Twitter can be confusing as hell, especially if you have never used it, so this is optional.*

Well, I think that’s all you need to know! Let me know in the comments or message me @duskangelreads on Twitter or Instagram if you want to join.

Kell is one of the last Antari—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black.

Kell was raised in Arnes—Red London—and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.

Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see. It’s a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they’ll first need to stay alive.

“Hesitation is the death of advantage.”

This was my second experience with Victoria Schwab’s writing (first being the Monsters of Verity Duology). I enjoyed her writing when I first read one of her books, but I think I enjoyed it, even more, this time around. She has the ability to get to the point and move along quickly to keep the book feeling well paced but also takes enough time to build and develop the world and characters. She created a very vivid world (well worlds, plural,  actually) in this book. However, it was in no way info dumping. We gradually learn about each London and it’s done in a way that feels natural rather than just for the sack of world building.

I also really enjoyed the way the characters were introduced and developed. Even in this first book of the series all the characters we meet feel fleshed out and realistic. Nothing felt forced or fake about these characters or their relationships with each other.

This is also a book that has the right amount of romance for me. As in very little. In A Darker Shade of Magic, not once did I feel like the romance was taking over the plot of the book. It felt natural and for once the characters were more focused on the world ending than their relationship. That is a pet hate for me in YA books. Characters just go off and do romantic or sexual crap when the world is falling apart around them, yet they claim to be helping. That was not the case in this book. The characters had their priorities straight for once!

In the beginning, the plot was a little slow. However, it was done well. In the beginning, the author is setting the scene and things are happening but you can’t make the connections. Then at around 1/4 of the way into the book, we dive straight into the action. From then on out the book is full of action, mystery & twists and turns.

“I’d rather die on an adventure than live standing still.”

First off me have Lila, who I loved and also she reminded me or myself. For one thing, she has a sarcastic attitude, which is totally me. She is also funny at the perfect times, which while I’m not going to toot my own horn by saying I’m the same, I do amuse myself with my well-timed jokes, whether other people find it funny, well I don’t particularly care haha.

“I apologize for anything I might have done. I was not myself.”
“I apologize for shooting you in the leg.” said Lila. “I was myself entirely.”

She also has an awesome attitude to life. She doesn’t let anyone tell her what she can’t do, she takes opportunities when they come along and she tries to live life to the fullest even if that means risking her own neck.

“I’m not going to die,” she said. “Not till I’ve seen it.”
“Seen what?”
Her smile widened. “Everything.”

Next, we have Kell who is such an amazing character. He is one of those characters that is just straight out good. He is caring, loving and protective even when he doesn’t know people fully. His relationship with his brother Rhy is amazing! I love strong family dynamics in books and even though the whole situation between them is a little rough they care about each other fiercely. They try and keep each other on the right track (even if it doesn’t always work) and they protect each other with everything they have.

Kell wore a very peculiar coat.

It had neither one side, which would be conventional, nor two, which would be unexpected, but several, which was, of course, impossible.

Rhy, Kell’s brother, we only actually see a couple times in the book. However, in that short time we do, I really liked him. Like I said above I really enjoy his and Kell’s relationship. He is another simply good guy in this book (There were 3). He is kinda sweet an innocent some of the time but then he is also a bit of a troublemaker and wants to have fun. He is also just so nice and cares so much.

Holland is a questionable character. While I don’t agree with some of the things he does, I don’t hate him either. He is a mysterious character and I hope we get to learn more about him.

Lastly, I want to talk about Barron, who only have a small role in the book. I loved him! He is my 3rd good guy type character. He is so nice and just wants to help those in need. He is one of those people that would do anything to help someone even if he doesn’t really know them. What happened to him throughout the book killed me, like a lot. I won’t say anything more as I don’t want to spoil anyone.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. There is nothing I can complain about or that I didn’t enjoy. The writing, world building, character development and plot are all amazing. The characters are so well done and just amazing people! I love it!
I did read this as part of the A Darker Shade of ReadALongs which is hosted by Common Spence on YouTube. So I won’t be reading Book 2 until next month! Which kinda sucks as I want to start it right now, but I will wait so I don’t get confused with what happens in which book during the discussion!

She considered him a moment before answering. “Delilah Bard,” she said. “But Lila will do.” Lila. A soft name but she used it like a knife, slashing out on the first syllable, the second barely a whisper of metal through air.

Magical ReadAThon – NEWTs Edition

So a couple months ago there was a OWLs Edition of Magical ReadAThon. You won’t really be able to do the NEWTs if you didn’t do the OWLs. For this ReadAThon each subject has 3 challenges. However, you can only do the challenges for a subject that you completed in the OWLs edition. Same as at Hogwarts, if you fail a subject in your OWLs you won’t be allowed to continue with that subject. Now, each subject as I said has 3 challenges, one for each of the pass grades you can receive during exams (Acceptable, Exceeds Expectations & Outstand). You have to complete these in order. So you start with the Acceptable challenge and then move up to Exceeds Expectations and then finally onto Outstanding. Hopefully that all makes sense, it is really hard to explain but I will leave links below to the creator’s announcement post.

The ReadAThon will go for the entire month of August.

This is going to be a hectic couple month as there are a lot of ReadAThons I want to join coming up! There is just a lot of ReadAThons happening! TBR Jar ReadAThon!

Yes, I am finally hosting a ReadAThon!! Here is all you need to know! I have a full announcement linked below but this is just your main overview!

The ReadAThon goes from midnight on the 2nd till 11:59 pm on the 8th of July.

TBR Jar ReadAThon

So, this ReadAThon it is exactly as it sounds! You put the names of books in a Jar (or mug, or cup, or hat, whatever works) and pull one out, read & repeat until the ReadAThon ends. You also set your own goal. So make a goal with how many books you want to read in the week of the ReadAThon and aim for that number!
As for what books you put in the jar well that depends on you! You can put all the books on your TBR into the jar, you can put the books you are anticipating & really want to read in the jar, if you are doing another reading challenge for the month you can put the names of all of those books in the jar or you can do what I will be doing which is get 2 jars, one for physical/eBooks & one for audiobooks. I read a lot more audiobooks than physical and I don’t want to be limited waiting for an audiobook to come out of the jar. So I will have 2 separate & you can do that too if you are someone that reads audiobooks like I do.

Well, that is the main gist of how it goes. I go into some extra info in my announcement to cover any questions I may have got so feel free to check that out!

Giveaway!

There is a GIVEAWAY for this ReadAThon too! If you are participating then all you have to do is let people know on whichever platform you prefer (Instagram, Twitter, blog, Booktube, Litsy, etc.) that you are participating. Then go to my announcement post & in the comments either leave the link to your post or where I can find it (I know for Instagram & such it isn’t as easy to get a link as it is for other platforms, so just tell me where & your handle and I will check it out!) And that is how you enter! Make sure you use the Hashtag #TBRJarRAT & if it is on Twitter you can tag @TBRJarRAT too!
If you are unsure how to announce it, it could be as simple as posting a pic of your TBR jar and say you are getting ready of #TBRJarRAT or if you want a bit more then you can tell us all the books that are going in your TBR jar! Whatever works is fine, just make sure you link back to be entered!

Tome Topple ReadAThon

This one is the reason I wanted to get this up a little early as I know how popular it is and it does cross over from June into July. This is a 2 week long ReadAThon and the main challenge is to read Tomes. If you don’t know a Tome is any book over 500 pages. This ReadAThon has optional Reading Challenges, Instagram Challenges & will have reading sprints happening on Twitter.

The ReadAThon goes from midnight on the 29th of June till 11:59 pm on the 12th of July.

Some rules are you can only read Tomes, so over 500 pages or very very close. If a book is 499 then go for it. The Creator has said that 475 is an absolute minimum but over 500 pages are prefered. Also, another rule is that short story collections DO NOT count as a Tome even if they have more than 500 pages. Graphic Novel bind ups DO count as it’s very hard to find Graphic novels over 500 pages, whereas bind ups are a collection of 2 or more volumes together in 1 book. Audiobooks do count as long as the physical copy of the said book is a Tome.

Reading Challenges:

1. Read more than 1 Tome
2. Read a Graphic Novel/Bind Up (Over 500 pages)
3. Read a Tome that is part of a series
4. Buddy Read a Tome (You can head to the Goodreads group linked below to find a buddy if you wish)
5. Rean an Adult novel

Summer Alphabethon – Month Long Special

This is an extra round of Alphabethon that will be a month long instead of the usual week. This is happening during the american Summer holidays, so they decided to make a special month long ReadAThon.

The ReadAThon will go for the entire month of July.

If you have heard of Alphabethon before you will know that each round they read a single letter of the Alphabet. BUTTT for this month long edition your challenge is to read the entire Alphabet! Okay, maybe not all 26 but challenge yourself as much as possible. The next challenge is that you have to read in Alphabetical order! So you can’t just pick and choose letters, you have to read A then B then C, etc.
Another rule is this time books will only count if the first letter in the title is the specific letter. Usually Author first & last name counts too but for this month long edition only book titles count.

High Summer ReadAThon

This is a month long ReadAThon that has no reading challenges besides just to challenge yourself and read more than usual. There is also a bonus Christmas in July mini ReadAThon happening (28th – 31st July) wherein you are challenged to read Christmas books.

The ReadAThon will go for the entire month of July.
However, this one you are encouraged to all start at the exact same time rather than midnight in your time zone. So it starts on Midnight on the 1st of July in Central US Time. So you will need to convert to your time so you know when to start & finish.

Around the World ReadAthon

This is a month long ReadAThon all about reading books from different countries. This ReadAthon works on a Bingo Board but the unique thing with this Bingo Board is you have to pick a starting point somewhere on the board and then make your way around using the adjacent squares (Horizontal does count). Also, all the books you read must be by authors from a country besides your own unless the bingo card says otherwise.

The ReadAThon will go for the entire month of July.

Road Trip ReadAThon

This is a month long ReadAThon based on taking a road trip and I actually love the idea of this one!

The ReadAThon will go for the entire month of July.

Basically what you do is choose a state/country. They are basing it on the US states but if you are outside of the US you could still choose to do the US OR you could do your own states/countries/territories/provinces (whatever word you use) OR you could choose another random continent and use their States & such. You could be in the UK but choose Australia and use our states & territories.
Anyway after you choose your state you read a book set in that state, then you move to the next state, however, it has to be a connected state. Like if you were on a Road Trip, you can’t just start in Queensland jump over Northern Territory and choose Western Australia instead. You have to travel from state to adjacent state. You just keep doing this until the end of July!

They have an example on the announcement post which I will link below.

TBR Jar ReadAThon Announcement!

Header Image (10)

Guys, I’m finally hosting a ReadAThon! I have had this idea for ages and was originally just going to do a month-long reading challenge for myself where I do this. However, I have decided to actually make it into a ReadAThon! This ReadAThon will be starting on my birthday too!

TBR JarReadAThon

This Round will be going from midnight on the 2nd till 11:59pm on the 8th (7 days long)

Blog titles (18)

This ReadAThon is pretty simple. First, pick a goal. I will be aiming for 7 books, but you can choose as many or as little books as you wish.
Next, grab a jar, or cup, or hat, I don’t care. Something you can put names into.
For the next step, you can do this one a few ways.
Option 1 is to put all the books on your TBR (physical, eBook, audiobook, whatever you wish) into a hat.
Option 2, you can pick some of the books you are most looking forward to and put them in a hat. (Try and put at least double the amount that is your goal)
Option 3, (this is what I will be doing), get a 2nd jar, in 1 jar put all the physical & eBooks books on your TBR into it and in the 2nd jar put all the audiobooks on your TBR.
Lastly, pick a name out of the jar and read that book, then pick another name and read that book and continue until you either hit your goal or run out of time in the ReadAThon.

Blog titles (19)

If you want to join please make a post announcing that you are participating & your first TBR Jar picks. This can be a blog post, Twitter, Instagram or YouTube.

Use the hashtag #TBRJarRAT so I can see what you’re up to (also if it is on Twitter then you can tag the @TBRJarRAT page too.

So, some of you may have a few books from the same series still on your TBR. Join the club. So if this is the case, you can either choose to only put the 1st book (or the book you are up to) in the TBR jar OR you can put it in as the full series. So if you pick up that name, then you have to try and read all the books from that series that you have on your shelf.
This ReadAThon is very customisable, so do whatever fits you.

TBR Jar ReadAThon

I will be holding some reading sprints over on the TBR Jar ReadAThon Twitter. So make sure you follow @TBRJarRAT

There will be a giveaway for everyone who participates! All you have to do is leave a link to your post stating that you are participating in the comments of this announcement! Giveaway winner announced on the last day of the ReadAThon!
Winner will receive 1 book of up to $20 AUD value from Book Depository!

I just want to explain how I will be doing this ReadAThon. As I said above I will have 2 jars, one for audiobooks & one for physical/eBooks. This is because I want to be able to read both at the same time rather than be limited to only what I pull out of the jar, no matter if that is physical or audio. So at the start, I will pick an audiobook & a physical/eBook out of the jars and start there. As I finish each I will then pick another out of the designated jars.

I will be doing a video on my YouTube channel where I tell you all the books that are going into my TBR jar choose my first books, so keep an eye out for that one & then I will be doing a reading vlog for that week where you can see all my TBR Jar choosing!

Please let me know if you will be joining in the comments. Also if you have any questions please comment and I will get back to you straight away.

The Alphabethon is a pretty chill ReadAthon. The only challenge is to read books that either the book title or Author (first or last name) starts with a certain letter

You can find there Twitter HERE!

New Blog Title (26)

The ReadAThin is a month long ReadAThon concentrating on thinning out those TBRs! The main rule is that you can only use books that you already owned or had ordered prior to the reading challenges going up. The challenges went up today Sunday 28th-Monday 29th (depending on time zone). So any book you ordered yesterday still counts! This ReadAThon goes all month and the goal is to complete 6 challenges, but obviously, you can read other books throughout the month, that just depends on how much you read in a month. The goal is 6 challenges but you can complete as many as you want! Don’t stress yourself out. You can also use 1 book for 2 challenges, but no more than that. So you could complete the ReadAThon by reading 3 books if you could find ones that fit.

This month they also have a group book, which I don’t understand the point of personally. If you don’t already own the book then it doesn’ count & you can’t already own the book as it doesn’t release till the 6th of Feb (unless you have an ARC)!!!

The group book:

33158532

Reading Challenges:

– 2017/2018 release
– Buddy Read (This can include the group book)
– Least Favourite Emoji
– Read a New To You Author
– Finish a series
– A book with a spring themed cover
– Read a book with red, pink or white
– It’s Black History month, Read a book with a Person of Colour
– Read a book featuring a diverse relationship *
– Read a smutty book
– Read a book with NO romance

*For clarification, they are only counting LGBTQIAP+ relationships, not relationships that feature any other diversity, such as mental illness, race, etc.

Well, that is all. If you know of any other ReadAThons happening in February then please let me know in a comment or tag me on Twitter @duskangelreads.

Header Image (12).jpg

Okay, so I am utterly fucking crazy! This will be ReadAThon number 4 in November. You can find my #HouseCupReadingChallenge TBR HERE & Read-A-Thin HERE if you wanted to know about those. My TBR for Duodecathon will be up closer to the dates of it.

Okay, so as this was a late announcement and it didn’t make it onto my November Reading Guide till about half an hour ago I am going to put all the info below. I’ll just copy and paste it straight from my guide! If you already know then just skip the the ‘My TBR’ header.

Blog Title (28)

Okay, so this is a really fun looking ReadAThon and I’m thinking about adding it into my crazy November!!

This ReadAThon starts at midnight on the 5th of November & ends at 11:59 on the 11th of November. There is alsoa Pirates of the Caribbean WatchALong happening from the 12th to the 18th.

You can watch Ali’s video HERE for a whole in depth desrciption of the ReadAThon along with an example TBR but I am going to try and explain it!

Firstly, the map!

*This was taken from the link in Ali’s video.*

scallywagathon

Okay, so how this map works is firstly you pick a number between 1 & 5. Once you pick your starting point you follow the corresponding coloured line to the next challenge. Most of them have more than one option you can choose from. Then when you get to your first stop you then follow that number or letter’s correspoding coloured line to the next challenge until you get to the treasure chest. All of the tracks you take will have 4 challenges but if you finish those 4 in the week you are welcome to continue onto any of the other challenges you wish.
So, here is an example of how to navigate the map. I am going to start at 1, from there I will follow the dark purple line to 6, from there I will follow the orange line to A and then from A I will follow the dark blue line to 9 and then to the treasure! Hopefully that makes sense.

When you complete the 4 challenges you can enter your email in the link on Ali’s video to get some free printables from Ali!

Okay, next is the Pirates of the Caribbean WatchALong. Here is a calendar that can be downloaded from the link in Ali’s video. It has the dates on the sides for each of the movie WatchALongs. However follow Ali on Twitter as she will be announcing closer to the date the times that they will be watching each movie.

scallywagathon (1)

And finally she is holding a giveaway! All you have to do is post your TBR to either YouTube, Blog or Tumblr and leave the link in the comments of Ali’s video. Also make sure you leave a way for Ali to contact you in your TBR post.
