Banned Books I’ve Read!

Copy of Header Image (8)

So to go along with Banned Books Week & Banned Books ReadAThon I thought I would share some of the Banned Books that I have read.

I’ll also insert screen captures of why & when these books were banned or challenged if I can find it.

Blog titles (2)

Well, this was an obvious one really. Harry Potter is my favourite series of all time and it is definitely one that has been banned and challenges often.

I read this trilogy around the time when the first movie came out and LOVED it! I really need to do a reread of this one!

To Kill a Mockingbird is a book that I had to read in, I think year 10. Since then I have reread it and continued onto the sequel, Go Set a Watchman. While I enjoyed and recommend To Kill a Mockingbird, I think Go Set a Watchman was absolutely pointless.

It’s been a very long time since I read The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It’s probably at a point that if I hadn’t of watched the movie more recently I would have forgotten what happens. I do remember liking it at the time and I really enjoy the movie. Another one that I am well and truly due for a reread of.

This was one of the first big series I read. I read all 6 VA books back to back and then went straight on to the companion series, Bloodlines. Loved all of them!!

Even though I am in no way a contemporary reader, I did enjoy this one because of the mystery/hunt side of it. It was really interesting.

First off I’m not sure which Goosebumps books I read as it has been ages and I simply don’t remember. But I had heaps of fun reading these in late primary and early high school.

I actually haven’t finished this series. I have read The Fellowship of the Ring & The Two Towers but still haven’t gotten to The Return of the King. However,  I am in the process of reading all the books in the LOTR world on audiobook. I have read The Hobbit and hope to get to The Fellow Ship of the Ring during Banned Books ReadAThon.

I’ve read the first two books in The Mortal Instruments series and didn’t particularly care for them. I found city of bones on a couple of the lists but its not one I could find information on.

51vv75oglyL._SX326_BO1,204,203,200_

I am yet to find a classic I can get into. This included. It was fine, it was slightly interesting but for the most part I didn’t know what was going on or really what the point was. Just wasn’t very impressive.

Banned Books ReadAThon TBR

Copy of Header Image (10)

It’s, time for the Banned Book ReadAThon TBR! I will not be making a video for my TBR as I am sick and lost my voice for 2 days and my voice is still really hoarse and my throat is still sore! On top of that, I think I am getting conjunctivitis. So all is great!

Blog titles (4)

My goal for Banned Books ReadAThon is to read as many Harry Potter books as I can! I will be starting from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and working my way through the series. I haven’t reread via the physical books in a while now and I think it’s time! Also, these books have been banned and challenge multiple times all over the world so they are a perfect fit!

I was also planning on reading Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi but I don’t think it will get here in time. We will have to see!

Also just on the side, I will be reading Huntin Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco. I’m trying to get this finished by the end of the month, so it will be in the background during Banned Books ReadAThon too!

Blog titles (5)

I’m in the process of rereading LOTR and also reading the other books set in the LOTR world! So this is a perfect excuse to continue with this!

And these are just two other banned or challenged books that I have on audiobook.

The Gentlemen’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

This is a fun, diverse historical fiction. I absolutely love this book. The characters are amazing and I specifically enjoyed Felicity, so I am so excited for book 2 which is a companion from Felicity’s POV.

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

This i a YA Contemporary Cinderella retelling. Even though I am not generally a contemporary fan I did really enjoy this. I loved the fandom side of things and loved all the little references to Cinderella throughout. It was super fun.

Gemina by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

THIS BOOK!! I’m pretty sure this is my favourite book in The Illuminae Files. The Illuminae Files is in my Top 5 favourite series and I adored Gemina! I love the character we get to meet in this one and the chaos that happens throughout! I just love this series so much!

Graevale by Lynette Noni

Graevale is the 4th book in The Medoran Chronicles series which is my second favourite series of all time and it’s not even all out yet! This world is absolutely amazing, the characters are spot on, the friendship is the best I have seen since Harry, Ron & Hermione. I absolutely adore this series and everything about it!

1. What is your favourite bookish trope? (I borrowed this from Anna since I really liked the question.)

It really depends on how well the trope is done, but some I don’t mind if done well are villain redeems themselves, chosen one & protagonist sacrificing themselves.

2. What is your least favourite bookish trope?

Now here I have a list:
Love Triangles
Insta Love
Every MC finding their love interest (You know its more likely to meet someone and NOT fall in love!)
Absent/arsehole/dead/missing parents (Again, more likely to have parents that are present and not complete arseholes… Why can’t YA characters actually have awesome parents occasionally!)
Continuous use of quotes such as: “she felt her heart begin to race”, “The corner of his mouth quirked up” & “I let out a breath I didn’t realise I was holding”

3. If you had to have three YA book characters back you up in a fight, who would they be?

Amani from Rebel of the Sands
Lila Bard from A Darker Shade of Magic
Ginny Weasley from Harry Potter

4. How many books are on your TBR?

I have 57 books on my physical TBR!

5. How many books have you read this year so far?

Screen Shot 2018-09-12 at 12.29.55 pm

6. What’s the story behind your blogs name?

Okay, so this is a little random. But ‘Dusk Angel’ was a randomly generated name from when I signed up for Runescape when I was in high school. I couldn’t think of a username at the time and didn’t want to use anything close to my real name as I did for everything else. So I just kept randomly generating usernames until Duskangel…. came up. I really liked it, so I kept using it for other things. Originally I used duskangel222 for personal things. Then when I created my blog I added ‘Reads’ at the end. I am also a photographer running under ‘Dusk Angel Photography’. I’m a beauty therapist and my salon is called ‘Dusk Angel Beauty’ and I will soon be creating candles which I am calling ‘Candles by Dusk Angel’

7. Give me three interesting facts about yourself?

I always need to be doing something! I run my own salon. I work as a seasonal Lifeguard. I run a photography hobby business, Dusk Angel Photography where I photograph cars & trucks. I run this blog and a Youtube, Instagram & Twitter that goes along with it. I run the Facebook Group The YA Book Nerds. I run an international Book exchange, The Book Nerds Book Exchange. I host 2 ReadAthons and planning a 3rd (TBR Jar ReadAThon & MateAThon). I run The Ultimate ReadAThon Guide. I’m starting a candle company, just waiting for supplies. There is probably something I’m missing.

I used to Parade & Judge cattle at regional shows in the area when I was in high school.

I own 3 cats, Hoppy (who only has 3 legs), Mmiee (pronounced M-E) & Possum (who is the devil covered in fluff) & a rescue dog, Roxy, that came from an abusive & neglectful home. She is blue heeler cross labrador and she is gorgeous!

8. What’s your favourite book that you’ve read so far in 2018?

Just 1?! Nope.
The Themis Files by Sylvain Neuvel, This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada, Graevale by Lynette Noni & Truly Devious by Maureen Johnston

9. What book has been on you TBR the longest?

Well, I have unhauled most of the really old ones. But maybe And I Darken by Kiersten White or A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess.

10. What is the number one thing that you’re grateful for?

I never know what to answer for this..

11. As a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?

I didn’t have an exact plan but I wanted to work with animals.

Blog titles (1)

I won’t be tagging 11, but here is who I tag!

Kathy @ Books and Munches

Destiny @ Howling Libraries

Abi @ Abi’s Book Reviews

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander

Or this one?

Finding Wonders by Jeannine Atkins

This book has 3 stories about 3 women that make scientific discoveries throughout history. This book is written in verse and this was actually my first time reading in verse. I personally do not like poetry but I really enjoyed this book. I also loved the background on the discoveries made. It was super interesting.

This is the first book in the Kanin Chronicles. The Kanin chronicles is the companion series to the Trylle Trilogy. I really enjoyed these books but it’s been a long time since I read it.

So I liked one story more than the other, so I’m just going to break this review into 2 mini-reviews for each story.

Blog titles

3 star

This was my least favourite of the two stories. While it was interesting, I honestly didn’t think most of it was that important. My favourite part of this one is right at the beginning when we get to meet the previous Queen as she is giving birth to the three queens we meet in Three Dark Crowns. That bit was quite interesting and did explain something that is discovered at the end of Three Dark Crowns. Besides that part, the rest of this story just kinda heightens how cruel this whole royal system is in this world. The rest of this story didn’t really shed any light on anything or really serve a purpose, so I didn’t find it overly necessary or entertaining.

Blog titles (1)

4 and a half star

This story follows a previous queen that we hear mentioned often throughout Three Dark Crowns and One Dark Throne books. There is a lot of disturbing rumours about what happened during that queen’s rule. This story basically explains what actually happened. And HOLY SHIT. First off I loved the characters, I connected with them all straight away and considering how short the story is, they were very well developed and thought out. By the end of this story, I actually felt like stabbing someone. Just the intense as hell stuff that happens in this story!! My god, I was so angry by the end of it.
This is definitely a story that drags you in from the first chapter and you end up so invested in the characters that when something happens to them you can’t help being sad/angry/etc.

Thou shalt kill.

A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery. Humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control.

Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.

I just love this book honestly. But the writing is definitely my favourite part. This book makes you question so many things. For one, you can vividly see how this could be us in the future, which is scary as hell honestly. There is a lot of discussions around morality and mortality/immortality in this book. It just basically makes you question everything and I loved it.

The world building is amazingly done. Like I said it is extremely vivid because of how close to reality it is but also all those differences just stand out. We basically learn through Citra & Rowan being bought into the world of the Scythes and also through the Scythe Journal Entires.

Speaking of the Scythe Journal Entries, I really enjoyed them. They always gave you that bit of background, something to think about and just let you dive a little deeper into the mind of that specific person.

Blog titles (30)

While the plot was a bit slower at times, there were enough twists and turns to keep me interested. Besides one major thing that I guessed before even picking up the book, the plot was not predictable. Whenever there was a twist, it was generally something extremely shocking and there was no way to prepare for that thing to happen!

We follow two POV in this book, Citra & Rowan. While I did enjoy Citra as a character a bit more than Rowan, I did like reading from Rowan’s POV because of his situation.

Citra is a more of the strong and intelligent one and then Rowan is a little questionable at times. He goes through a tonne of character development and while I didn’t always agree with how that was turning out there were times when I 100% agreed with his choices.

As for the Scythes, we have our ‘good guys’ & our ‘bad guys’. Scythe Faraday was an interesting character and I enjoyed his methods. It just felt like there were more thought and reasoning behind Faraday’s choices than some of the others.
Scythe Curie is a wise woman and can usually judge what is best. She is loyal and caring and I really enjoyed her.

As for the ‘bad guys’, while I wouldn’t like them as people as they are horrible, I did enjoy them as characters. They were very well done and you couldn’t help but hate them. However, I did find myself agreeing with some of the main ‘bad guy’s opinions, I didn’t agree with his methods though. He also totally got what was coming for him.

The only weak point of this book is the romance. It quite simply didn’t feel natural. I found them connecting as characters but it kinda jumps straight into a potential romance and it just didn’t feel right.

I loved everything about this book excluding the romance. It is such an interesting, unique and well developed world. The characters are amazingly done and the plot is a little slow but worth it for all the twists and turns throughout! Highly recommend.

E – The ABC Book Challenge

Copy of Header Image (3)

I missed last Saturday as I went to 2 car shows in one day, which also involved about 6 hours altogether driving an I was just exhausted when I got home. You can find all the photos on my photography blog Dusk Angel Photography if you were interested in vintage Aussie cars.

For this challenge, every week you make a post talking about the best books you’ve read and the ones you are keen for on your TBR that start with a specific letter.
So this week I will be doing the letter E. I will not be including the word ‘The’ as the first word.

There is only 2 for this month. For the most part, the books starting with E were either meh or I didn’t like at all. But here are the 2 books that I have read and loved that start with E.

Escape from Mr Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein

This is the first book in the Mr Lemoncello’s Library series. This is a fun, amusing and action-filled middle-grade book. This is full of books, libraries, knowledge & famous new & historical people. Overall it is just super fun and I loved listening to the series on audiobook! Highly recommend.

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

This is the first book in the Wayward Children’s series and while this book is not my favourite in the series I still really enjoyed it. It is a mystery book and I love a good mystery. I also love the range of diversity we saw in these characters.
