September 2018 TBR

Copy of Header Image (2)

First off I will be doing 2 ReadAThons in September. The first will not have a TBR as it is the TBR Jar ReadAThon and I don’t know what I’ll be reading until it starts and I pull the names out of the jar. The other, Banned Books ReadAThon, will have its own TBR.

Unearthed by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner

This is one of the BOTMs for The YA Book Nerds, the Facebook Group I run. So I need to read this to create the discussion questions. I am also trying to get a couple people together to do a buddy read for this one between the 1st and 7th (TBR Jar RAT starts on the 8th).

Truly Devious by Maureen Johnston

Truly Devious will be a reread. This is also the other BOTM for The YA Book Nerds. I listened to Truly Devious on audiobook a while back and LOVED it! So I want to reread via the physical book & annotate it. Still waiting for it to come in the mail though!

Stalking Jack the Ripper & Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco

Both of these are Rereads. I’ve read SJTR twice now & HPD once. All those reads were via audiobook and I want to reread the physical book and annotate before Escaping From Houdini comes out! I’ve already started SJTR.

The Gentlemen’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

This is another reread! We are reading The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats & Piracy in October as a Group Read on The YA Book Nerds. So I want to reread Gentlemen’s Guide!

A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab

It’s the second month in ADarkerShadeOfReadALongs and we are reading A Gathering of Shadows!

We Three Heroes by Lynette Noni

This is a Novella that goes with my second favourite series of all time. This released on the 29th and I’m anxiously waiting for it to ship!!

Calling Aussie Book Bloggers!

logo_Aussie-Aussie-Aussie-Tee-Thumb-1000x1000

I am currently organising an Australian themed ReadAThon for October!

I’m looking for fellow Aussies to help me cohost the ReadAThon!
I have posted this a couple places but realised that I didn’t even post it on my blog to see if any of you would like to help!

You do not have to be Aussie to participate but I would like all Aussies as the cohosts.

The whole thing will be based on Australian Stereotypes. The ReadAThon will be 8 days (12th – 19th of October) and will have 8 optional reading challenges to choose from.
There is also an Aussie Themed Book Tag to go along with it for the book bloggers & book tubers! The tag is also based on Stereotypes and is called the ‘Shrimp on the Barbie Book Tag’.

aussie-map-stereotypes

Just in case anyone was iffy about joining because they don’t know what being a cohost means, here are some of the things you will need to do:
– Participate in the ReadAThon (You don’t have to complete all 8 challenges, just do the best you can)
– Post an announcement for the ReadAThon to let others know it is happening & all the info (all the info will be provided)
– Post your TBR for the ReadAThon
– Post the Shrimp on the Barbie Book Tag on the 1st day of the ReadAThon
– Help with Twitter sprints
*If you don’t use Twitter this isn’t necessary however there will be a dedicated Twitter account for the ReadAThon so even if you don’t have an account you can still do the sprints if you want. But I know Twitter can be confusing as hell, especially if you have never used it, so this is optional.*

Well, I think that’s all you need to know! Let me know in the comments or message me @duskangelreads on Twitter or Instagram if you want to join.

D – The ABC Book Challenge

For this challenge, every week you make a post talking about the best books you’ve read and the ones you are keen for on your TBR that start with a specific letter.
So this week I will be doing the letter D. I will not be including the word ‘The’ as the first word.

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

This is the first book in the, now series, The Darkest Minds. I love this series so much and I can’t wait to get to the new 4th book, The Darkest Legacy. There is so much to love about this book including the characters, Ruby, Chubs, Zu & Liam! Chubs is probably my favourite of the main group. The world is also very detailed and vivid. The plot is also hectic & full of twists and turns.

Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody

This is one of my favourite books of last year! Not only is it super rare to find a good standalone fantasy but this book is also full of diversity. The world of Gomorrah is extremely unique and interesting. The abilities in this book are also really interesting and I would have loved to learn more about them, but I’m not complaining as like it said, standalones are rare!

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

This is the first book in a fantasy duology (also fairly rare). I listened to these books on audiobook & I highly recommend them! The audiobooks are very well done and the narration is really good. As for the book itself, this has a pirate ship full of badass females and this book has pirates & sirens! What more do you want?

Draekora by Lynette Noni

Definitely my favourite book out of this list! Draekora is the 3rd book in The Medora Chronicles series. The Medoran Chronicles is my 2nd favourite series of all time! Only second to Harry Potter. This series is filled with amazing friendships, hectic adventures and a super interesting world! Also, did I mention that it has dragons?!

Dragon on Trial by Tui T. Sutherland

More dragons! This is the 2nd book in a fun middle-grade series, Menagerie. Like I said, this book is really fun and entertaining. The first book starts off when a young boy wakes up to a Griffin cub hiding under his bed. This book is full of amazing and interesting magical creatures! If you’re looking for a fun, easy and entertaining read, then I highly recommend this series!

Goodreads TBR Clean Out

Copy of Header Image (5)

So as I’m doing  The ABC Book Challenge I am actually looking at my Goodreads more than usual and I realised how many books I have on there that realistically I know I won’t ever read. So I decided to do a clean out. Here are all the books I deleted. I will not be naming or linking them as there are too many.

Here is my starting point

Screen Shot 2018-08-23 at 10.42.11 pm

If there are any that aren’t released and don’t have covers yet I will type them below.

The Everlasting Rose by Dhonielle Clayton

Here is my finishing point. It’s also now 2 hours later haha.

Screen Shot 2018-08-24 at 12.20.22 am

So that is 188 books removed from my TBR on Goodreads. Not every single one is pictured as some were sequels that I haven’t read the book before it, so I don’t know why they were on there and also some were double ups.

Copy of Blog titles

Are there any of these you think I really need to read?! Keep in mind that I don’t like books with too much romance and I’ve heard that is the case for a lot of these.

C – The ABC Book Challenge

Argh, I’m hopeless at remembering to post these! This is the one that should have gone up on Saturday!

For this challenge, every week you make a post talking about the best books you’ve read and the ones you are keen for on your TBR that start with a specific letter.
So this week I will be doing the letter C. I will not be including the word ‘The’ as the first word.

I don’t have as many books for C that I love as I have for A & B.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

This is the first book in The Lunar Chronicles. While there are a couple things in this series that I don’t love, for the most part, I did really enjoy them. They are fun and action-packed. Also, the world is very well developed and vivid.

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

This is the amazing sequel to Six of Crows! These books are intense, action-packed and very enjoyable to read. The characters are very well developed and so is the world. Though I do recommend reading at least the first book in the Grisha Trilogy before starting Six of Crows as the magic system isn’t explained in Six of Crows at all, so that could be found confusing. I personally read in this order Shadow & Bone, Six of Crows, Siege and Storm, Ruin and Rising & Crooked Kingdom.

TBR Jar ReadAThon Round #2 Announcement

Copy of Header Image (2)

This Round will be going from midnight on the 8th till 11:59pm on the 14th of September (7 days long)

Blog titles (18)

This ReadAThon is pretty simple. First, pick a goal. I will be aiming for 7 books, but you can choose as many or as little books as you wish.
Next, grab a jar, or cup, or hat, I don’t care. Something you can put names into.
For the next step, you can do this one a few ways.
Option 1 is to put all the books on your TBR (physical, eBook, audiobook, whatever you wish) into a hat.
Option 2, you can pick some of the books you are most looking forward to and put them in a hat. (Try and put at least double the amount that is your goal)
Option 3, (this is what I will be doing), get a 2nd jar, in 1 jar put all the physical & eBooks books on your TBR into it and in the 2nd jar put all the audiobooks on your TBR.
Lastly, pick a name out of the jar and read that book, then pick another name and read that book and continue until you either hit your goal or run out of time in the ReadAThon.

Blog titles (19)

You can choose to pull the number of names for your goal out of the jar prior to the ReadAThon of pull them out as you go.

Use the hashtag #TBRJarRAT so I can see what you’re up to (also if it is on Twitter then you can tag the @TBRJarRAT page too.

So, some of you may have a few books from the same series still on your TBR. Join the club. So if this is the case, you can either choose to only put the 1st book (or the book you are up to) in the TBR jar OR you can put it in as the full series. So if you pick up that name, then you have to try and read all the books from that series that you have on your shelf.
This ReadAThon is very customisable, so do whatever fits you.

Yes, we have Instagram Challenges this time around! They are completely optional but are there if you want to join in!

The Instagram Challenges will be posted on the TBRJarRAT Instagram within the next24 hours of this post going live.

Just picture the most epic book with more twists and turns than chapter headings that you know? Got one, cool, now picture that book on Steroids…. Ladies & Gentlemen I present…… This Mortal Coil.

The only way I can describe this book is insane (in the best way possible).

The writing is amazing! This book hooks you from the first page and does not let you go! There are tonnes of brilliantly done world building. It is done in a way that you feel like you know everything you need to, but it was never excessive info dumping. Besides the world building that sets the scene at the beginning of the book we mostly learn as the main character learns new things. The world building was so vivid and I wasn’t left disappointed at all.

This book is pretty heavy on the coding/technology side of Sci-Fi. Which is something I personally don’t know jack crap about. However everything was very well explained in this book, I never found my self utterly confused about anything that was discussed in this book. Again it didn’t feel like info-dumping, we were given enough to understand what we needed to in that particular moment and then we moved along.

My only issue with this book is that I didn’t like the romance (I know, no surprise there, I just don’t like romance, but…). I simply felt like the two in the romance didn’t have chemistry between them. I kinda get it in some ways because of, well of everything I can’t talk about without spoiling you. But yeah I just didn’t feel an actual connection. There is also a love triangle, also didn’t enjoy that…

Blog titles (30)

I started This Mortal Coil before I started annotating my books and when I jumped back in I didn’t bother annotating only the last half of it. I’m so glad I made that choice! With the number of twists & turns in this book, I would have run out of orange sticky tabs easily (the colour I use for shocking/unexpected)!!!

This entire book is full of smaller things that are shocking and crazy. But then at the end it all comes together and is explained, to some degree. Everything had a purpose, it didn’t feel like plot twists just for the sake of plot twists! They had meaning and there was an overall plan from the beginning.

Absolutely love the plot! It kept me interested for the entire book!

Blog titles (31)

I really don’t feel like I can talk about the characters too much. Some of it would lead to spoilers & some I just can’t put into words because life in this book is confusing and all over the place and I don’t know what to think.

However, I do enjoy the characters, there are all so well done, even the questionable/bad guys. All the characters are fleshed out really well and each by themselves is interesting and unique.

Blog titles (32)

I loved nearly everything about this book! It is such an interesting world that is fully developed and explained amazingly. The characters are amazing as characters even if not all of them are amazing people. The plot was intense and a little crazy, okay a lot crazy. I can’t wait to get my hands on book two!!
