July 2018 TBR

Header Image (12)

Okay, so this will be a weird month! First off I haven’t decided on most of my TBR. Now the first part of the month will be dedicated to TBR Jar ReadAThon & Tome Topple ReadAThon and if you want to know what my possible reads for that are, then check out my TBR video below!

Next, Biannual Bibliothon is being held from the 14th till 20th & they haven’t announced the reading challenges yet! Which is also really freaking annoying as its only about 2 weeks until it starts & now it is too late to purchase anything online as it won’t get here in time… So I have no idea what I will read for that.

Lastly, BookTubeAThon is on at the end of July and into August. No reading challenges for that one yet either.

So I only have about a week or so of actual reading time in between all those ReadAThons. So I won’t have a tonne of times. But there is a couple of books that I want to read!

ReadAThon Guide – July 2018

I’m back for the next month’s ReadAThon guide! This month is exciting as I’m hosting my own ReadAThon! So yes I am featuring it first, shameless self-promo!! This is going to be a hectic couple month as there are a lot of ReadAThons I want to join coming up! There is just a lot of ReadAThons happening! I’m also posting this a little early as one of the more popular ones is crossing over from June into July but starting in late June and I want you to have prep time.

TBR Jar ReadAThon!

Yes, I am finally hosting a ReadAThon!! Here is all you need to know! I have a full announcement linked below but this is just your main overview!

The ReadAThon goes from midnight on the 2nd till 11:59 pm on the 8th of July.

TBR Jar ReadAThon

So, this ReadAThon it is exactly as it sounds! You put the names of books in a Jar (or mug, or cup, or hat, whatever works) and pull one out, read & repeat until the ReadAThon ends. You also set your own goal. So make a goal with how many books you want to read in the week of the ReadAThon and aim for that number!
As for what books you put in the jar well that depends on you! You can put all the books on your TBR into the jar, you can put the books you are anticipating & really want to read in the jar, if you are doing another reading challenge for the month you can put the names of all of those books in the jar or you can do what I will be doing which is get 2 jars, one for physical/eBooks & one for audiobooks. I read a lot more audiobooks than physical and I don’t want to be limited waiting for an audiobook to come out of the jar. So I will have 2 separate & you can do that too if you are someone that reads audiobooks like I do.

Well, that is the main gist of how it goes. I go into some extra info in my announcement to cover any questions I may have got so feel free to check that out!

Giveaway!

There is a GIVEAWAY for this ReadAThon too! If you are participating then all you have to do is let people know on whichever platform you prefer (Instagram, Twitter, blog, Booktube, Litsy, etc.) that you are participating. Then go to my announcement post & in the comments either leave the link to your post or where I can find it (I know for Instagram & such it isn’t as easy to get a link as it is for other platforms, so just tell me where & your handle and I will check it out!) And that is how you enter! Make sure you use the Hashtag #TBRJarRAT & if it is on Twitter you can tag @TBRJarRAT too!
If you are unsure how to announce it, it could be as simple as posting a pic of your TBR jar and say you are getting ready of #TBRJarRAT or if you want a bit more then you can tell us all the books that are going in your TBR jar! Whatever works is fine, just make sure you link back to be entered!

Tome Topple ReadAThon

This one is the reason I wanted to get this up a little early as I know how popular it is and it does cross over from June into July. This is a 2 week long ReadAThon and the main challenge is to read Tomes. If you don’t know a Tome is any book over 500 pages. This ReadAThon has optional Reading Challenges, Instagram Challenges & will have reading sprints happening on Twitter.

The ReadAThon goes from midnight on the 29th of June till 11:59 pm on the 12th of July.

Some rules are you can only read Tomes, so over 500 pages or very very close. If a book is 499 then go for it. The Creator has said that 475 is an absolute minimum but over 500 pages are prefered. Also, another rule is that short story collections DO NOT count as a Tome even if they have more than 500 pages. Graphic Novel bind ups DO count as it’s very hard to find Graphic novels over 500 pages, whereas bind ups are a collection of 2 or more volumes together in 1 book. Audiobooks do count as long as the physical copy of the said book is a Tome.

Reading Challenges:

1. Read more than 1 Tome
2. Read a Graphic Novel/Bind Up (Over 500 pages)
3. Read a Tome that is part of a series
4. Buddy Read a Tome (You can head to the Goodreads group linked below to find a buddy if you wish)
5. Rean an Adult novel

Summer Alphabethon – Month Long Special

This is an extra round of Alphabethon that will be a month long instead of the usual week. This is happening during the american Summer holidays, so they decided to make a special month long ReadAThon.

The ReadAThon will go for the entire month of July.

If you have heard of Alphabethon before you will know that each round they read a single letter of the Alphabet. BUTTT for this month long edition your challenge is to read the entire Alphabet! Okay, maybe not all 26 but challenge yourself as much as possible. The next challenge is that you have to read in Alphabetical order! So you can’t just pick and choose letters, you have to read A then B then C, etc.
Another rule is this time books will only count if the first letter in the title is the specific letter. Usually Author first & last name counts too but for this month long edition only book titles count.

High Summer ReadAThon

This is a month long ReadAThon that has no reading challenges besides just to challenge yourself and read more than usual. There is also a bonus Christmas in July mini ReadAThon happening (28th – 31st July) wherein you are challenged to read Christmas books.

The ReadAThon will go for the entire month of July.
However, this one you are encouraged to all start at the exact same time rather than midnight in your time zone. So it starts on Midnight on the 1st of July in Central US Time. So you will need to convert to your time so you know when to start & finish.

Around the World ReadAthon

This is a month long ReadAThon all about reading books from different countries. This ReadAthon works on a Bingo Board but the unique thing with this Bingo Board is you have to pick a starting point somewhere on the board and then make your way around using the adjacent squares (Horizontal does count). Also, all the books you read must be by authors from a country besides your own unless the bingo card says otherwise.

The ReadAThon will go for the entire month of July.

Road Trip ReadAThon

This is a month long ReadAThon based on taking a road trip and I actually love the idea of this one!

The ReadAThon will go for the entire month of July.

Basically what you do is choose a state/country. They are basing it on the US states but if you are outside of the US you could still choose to do the US OR you could do your own states/countries/territories/provinces (whatever word you use) OR you could choose another random continent and use their States & such. You could be in the UK but choose Australia and use our states & territories.
Anyway after you choose your state you read a book set in that state, then you move to the next state, however, it has to be a connected state. Like if you were on a Road Trip, you can’t just start in Queensland jump over Northern Territory and choose Western Australia instead. You have to travel from state to adjacent state. You just keep doing this until the end of July!

They have an example on the announcement post which I will link below.

So the CramAThon finished last night as I am soo happy with how much I read! I completed all 7 challenges as well as partly listened to 2 other audiobooks & partly read another book. I’ll just tell you here what those books were as they weren’t actually for the CramAThon.
Also here is my reading vlog for the full week of CramAThon

During the week I was listening to & finished Harry Potter & the Philosopher’s Stone. I didn’t record what the starting point was for this week but it was fairly early into the book & I completed it during this week. I also read 27 more pages of King of Ashes by Raymond E. Feist which is a book I’m slowly making my way through. Lastly, I listened to 188 pages of The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken on audiobook.

Audiobook Reccomendations!

Header Image (11)

I love audiobooks & I listen to them all the time! I’ve listened to close to 100 audiobooks, so I think I have a fair selection to choose from. So here is my audiobook recommendations!!

Copy of Goodreads Synopsis

Harry-Potter-Audiobooks-Pottermore

Of course, Harry Potter had to hit the top of this list! Not only are the books themselves amazing, the narration by Stephen Fry is perfect! He is an extremely good voice actor and can do a TONNE of different voices for each of the characters in HP and somehow keep those same voices up for the entire series.

This was one of the first audiobooks that I listened to that had a full cast of voice actors. These audiobooks are amazing! They have a full cast, sound effects, music and heaps more that makes in an incredible reading experience. And also The Illuminae Files are just an amazing series to begin with.
*Just a warning here. If you only listen to the audiobook you will miss the visual aspects of maps, drawings, etc that are present in the physical book. So I highly recommend using the audiobooks as a reread or flip along with the physical/eBook while listening even if it isn’t every page, just flip through every now and then to see what visuals you missed.*

5114RuxyrSL._SL500_

THIS AUDIOBOOK!!! If you are a Harry Potter fan YOU NEED to listen to this audiobook. The beginning of the book follows exactly what is said in the physical book, but then at the end, there is exclusive content and it is amazing! Wanna hear Ginny Potter commentating at the 2014 Quidditch World Cup while Rita Skeeter tries to get the latest gossip on Harry, Ginny, Hermione, Ron, Neville, Luna & all their families?!!? Then you need to listen to this audiobook. It was amazing and I loved getting that tiny snippet into Harry’s world well after the events of the Deathly Hallows

61HxW4sQfZL._SL500_.jpg

I know these first 3 are all Harry Potter related but they really are amazing audiobooks! This one is narrated by the actor that plays Newt Scamander in the movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Eddie Redmayne. Also, it is full of sound effects and awesome facts about the fantastical creatures in the wizarding world of Harry Potter

These books are amazing & the audiobooks are really well done! It seriously felt like I was listening to this book happen through a closed door. I couldn’t see it, but it felt real. The narrator is amazing and Audrey Rose is an amazing female MC!

These are a fun action-packed middle-grade series filled with books, fun & facts. It is literally set in a library with a crazy game/video game maker! I absolutely adored this series and the audiobook definitely added to the enjoyment!

This Duology is full of badass female pirates & sirens. What more could you want? I also really liked the narrator of this series and there was actual good singing for the siren song parts. Not just some narrator attempting to sing (Do not listen to The Raven Cycle on audiobook unless you want horrible singing!)

Basically, anything Agatha Christie that is narrated by Hugh Fraser is really good! I love Agatha Christie books but there is a shit tonne of them! So when I found a lot of them on Scribd I dived straight in and haven’t looked back. The narration is really good and you know basically all of the stories are amazing (Except Endless Night, just don’t even go there unless you want 80% romance & 10% mystery & 10% physiological I don’t know what!)

My goodness, this book was so good! I don’t know why but I love mystery/Thrillers on audiobook. This is apparently a YA Thriller, at the time I just kinda thought mystery but thriller works too. I knew nothing going into this except I had heard it talked about a couple times and I was not disappointed!

If you want a heartbreaking WW2 story that was amazingly done on audiobook then this is your one! This book follows the POV of 4 MCs and has 4 voice actors to fill those positions. All 4 voice actors also have appropriate accents. I’m not 100% sure if the accents are correct to the character they are representing as I’m not good with picking accents. But it made it feel all the more real. I had to pause this audiobook multiple times because I was crying and just couldn’t pay attention. It is so well done and I HIGHLY recommend it.

So I haven’t listened to Crooked Kingdoms yet but I just got it from Audible this week and will try and get to it very soon as I am concentrating on LGBT+ books in June for a couple events and Crooked Kingdoms has LGBT apparently.
However, I have listened to Six of Crows and it was so damn good. It is another one with multiple voice actors for the multiple POV the book follows. I suggest moving up the speed on this one as it is so action-packed that it drove me insane when it was at normal speed as I just needed to know what would happen next and it wasn’t happening fast enough!

This is an adult fantasy that is very character driven. As this is less about the plot and more about the characters I think I would have found it boring if I was physically reading it, but the audiobook was great. I love the group of character we meet in this book, there are tonnes of different species found in this book and they were all soo interesting.
I haven’t finished the audiobooks for the second book, A Closed and Common Orbit, but I did start it. Each book in this series is a companion book and follows a different MC and I just couldn’t connect with the new MC, however, I do want to give it another go as book 3, Record of a Spaceborn Few, is out in the next month and I am keen for it.

These two aren’t the same series but they are both by Ernest Cline and both spectacularly narrated by Wil Wheaton. Wil is the perfect voice for these gaming/sci-fi heavy books. I also just really enjoyed both of them. I love reading books about gaming and both of these have that. Ready Player One is set in and outside a virtual reality game. The creator has died and left eggs throughout the virtual reality world for players to find. The one to find them all the first gets ownership of the game and the creator’s fortune. Armada is where video games come to life when the government use the ideas from video games and brings in the best players around to pilot real-life versions of the battle spaceships in games to save the earth. Think the movie Pixels but with no vintage games. Both of these books are hectic and action-packed. Ready Player One is also full of pop culture hints.

Well, that is all the ones I can think of right now but I am always listening to new ones so I will do an updated version in a few months time.

Goodreads Synopsis

Leah Burke—girl-band drummer, master of deadpan, and Simon Spier’s best friend from the award-winning Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda—takes center stage in this novel of first love and senior-year angst.

When it comes to drumming, Leah Burke is usually on beat—but real life isn’t always so rhythmic. An anomaly in her friend group, she’s the only child of a young, single mom, and her life is decidedly less privileged. She loves to draw but is too self-conscious to show it. And even though her mom knows she’s bisexual, she hasn’t mustered the courage to tell her friends—not even her openly gay BFF, Simon.

So Leah really doesn’t know what to do when her rock-solid friend group starts to fracture in unexpected ways. With prom and college on the horizon, tensions are running high. It’s hard for Leah to strike the right note while the people she loves are fighting—especially when she realizes she might love one of them more than she ever intended

This is mainly just where I want to elaborate on a couple things I spoke about in my Spoiler Free Review and also mention a couple other things that I had no way of discussing without spoilers.

Firstly let’s talk about a few more things I had an issue with to do with Leah and elaborate on a couple things.

Let me talk about something I mentioned in the Anger Management Issues section. As I said half the time the reason she snapped was over nothing much. One example of this, the love interest, Abby & the guy Leah is leading on, Garrett is talking and they bring up the trip that Abby and Leah will be taking soon. Abby makes a joke and says “What happens in Athens stays in Athens” & Garrett replies with a raised eyebrow and a “Say no more”. They are just messing around but Leah takes it to a whole other level. She snaps & storms off and what is going through her head is that if Garrett is interested he should have taken Abby’s comment as a threat to his relationship and that if one of the guys said it there would be competition.
So first thing, he does know you are bi or that Abby is, so why would he think that is a threat to his relationship, my mates and I say shit like this all the time, that doesn’t mean we are hitting on each other… Second Abby has a boyfriend, yeah not everyone is loyal but you would think one of your friends wouldn’t go round actually flirting with someone else just to create issues in your relationship. Third, YOU ARE LEADING HIM ON!!! What do you care if he feels threatened anyway!
THENNNNN after this happens, the next day Garrett texts and apologises and Leah makes him promise to “stop being a dick” Uhm HI. He did nothing wrong except join in a joke! You’re the one throwing tantrums and acting like an ass.

My next point is actually related to the end of that last one and it is how Leah treats Garrett. Not only does she give him false hope and leads him on but she lies to him as mentioned in my spoiler free review. She also refers to him as ‘only Garrett’ more than once, like he isn’t even worth her time at all. She calls him annoying ALL THE DAMN TIME but in the book he does nothing annoying towards her except the awkward stages where he is nervous about how Leah feels about him and he is asking her to games or complimenting her and such. Not annoying, just nervous. If you have told the truth from the beginning this wouldn’t be happening because he would know you aren’t interested. Then there was this bombshell of a comment!
“I have to admit, I like the feeling of being pursued, even if it’s only Garrett. It just feels nice. And maybe nice is kind of refreshing.”
So you are leading him on because it feels nice to have someone interested in you. Wow bitch, wow.

I just want to touch on something Leah thinks at one point. This has more to do with why the author included this than about Leah herself. So that is why this is in the writing section. I actually saw a picture of this quote on Facebook but didn’t realise it was from this book as the person didn’t say. But this is the quote
“The daily cringe, starring Garrett Laughlin. Today’s episode: Garrett missed the memo  about not calling women ladies
Overall, this is just confusing. I think I may have missed the memo on what the problem is with calling people ladies too. When I first read it I thought it may have had something to do with not assuming labels and prefixes and such. But in the sentence, she calls them women, so it obviously has nothing to do with what names/words people choose to identify with. So I have no bloody idea what the problem is with calling a group ‘ladies’… I understand some women not liking being called ‘madam’ as that has more that one meaning and the one people have an issue with is that it can refer to a female pimp of sorts in the prostitution world. However, if someone knows why ‘ladies’ is an issue please enlighten me because no one had an answer on that post I saw on facebook either. I even looked it up on Urban dictionary because I thought I might have missed something but no ‘lady’ there means pretty positive things. So I don’t know.

Okay, now next I want to talk about the biggest problem I  had and this was the one that I saw prior to reading the book and that is the “lowkey bi” situation. If you don’t know. In the book, Abby comes out to Leah as ‘Lowkey bi’. She is only just trying to come out and figure out her sexuality. She always thought she was straight, but with Leah, she is realising that may not be true. Which is great, a lot of people realise their sexuality when they meet a certain person that makes them realise.
The negative thing about this is when Abby comes out to Leah she completely shuts Abby down. She tells her that ‘lowkey bi’ isn’t a thing and tries to force her to come out as bisexual because she is just in denial. I’ll add quotes just so you get the full blow of it.

” “I don’t think I’m straight,” she says, and my heart almost stops.
“I don’t know,” she adds finally. “I guess I’m lowkey bisexual?”

“I don’t think that’s a thing.”
“What? It totally is.” She pokes my arm. “lowkey bi.”
“You’re either bi or you’re not. That’s like being a little bit pregnant.”
“That’s a thing, too. Why can’t you be a little bit pregnant?”
“I think that’s just called pregnant.”
“Well, I’m a little bit bi, and I’m sticking with that.”
I sit up. “I don’t get you.”
“What?”
I shake my head. “Lowkey bi, a little bit bi. Just be bi. Like, come on.”
“What? No.” She draws herself up. “You don’t get to decide my label.”
“It’s not a real label!”
Well, it’s real for me.”….
………….
…………
“Jesus Christ, Abby.” I press my hands over my eyes. “I want you to stop messing with my head.”
“I’m not—“
“Seriously? Lowkey bi?” I laugh flatly. “Otherwise known as what—you’re bi, but don’t want to admit it? I’m not saying you have to march in a Pride parade. You don’t have to come out. But God. At least admit it to yourself.”…. “

This entire thing is not fucking on! Leah never even apologises for this or even ever thinks that maybe she was wrong. After she walks off it is never mentioned again and then later Abby just comes out as bi.
At no point should you ever force someone into a box or force a label on someone! If someone wants to come out as bisexual, awesome and if someone wants to come out as ‘lowkey bi’ that’s amazing too. In this instance, she was just trying to figure everything out and if ‘lowkey bi’ is what suited what she felt then she has every right to use it. After reading ‘lowkey bi’ I thought, yeah that makes sense a little for me too. I’m bisexual, I not sure if I 100% love that specific label as I feel that I like males and females differently, so lowkey bi also kinda works for me, still not spot on but it doesn’t have to be. Sexuality is about expressing who you are and who you are attracted to, everyone is different and there isn’t just one word to describe every group.

The lowkey bi thing really was the downfall of this book! I love Albertalli’s other books for the diversity and how it also sends a good message, to be who you are and choose what you want. But this does not sit right with me at all. This is not the only quote from this book that actually got under my skin. In a book where you are trying to relate and help people these quotes just aren’t fair. If you want to use quotes like this then fine, but have another character call that person out and make sure the person that says it realises how wrong it is, especially when it is the main character that we are meant to enjoy! Make a lesson out of it! But how it was used in this book, I just can’t accept that and I most likely won’t support this author again when these are the types of messages she is sending to readers.

Well, I think that is all I want to talk about. There were other things that bugged me, but I have been working on this review for 4 days now and I’m sick of pulling myself down every time I have to remember the hurtful shit that was in this book. So I am ending it here.

HAVE YOU READ THIS BOOK? WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON IT?!
