June 2018 TBR

Header Image (4)

Okay, so I had an AWESOME reading month in May when it comes to audiobooks. SO hopefully that will continue over into June. I haven’t put many audiobooks on my TBR, as I will be doing a separate TBR post that involves a few audiobooks. TBR & Beyond, one of the Facebook groups I am in, is hosting a Pride Event called Love is Love is Love and in that event, I will listening/reading some LGBTQIAP+ books. But I am doing a separate post for that as it won’t be a strict TBR, just possible reads if I get the time.

Now onto the TBR!

Scallywagathon Wrap Up

Header Image (3)

Okay, so it has been a few days since Scallywagathon and I’m finally doing my wrap up! Here is what I read!

Blog titles

So outside of the challenges, I also finished a book & started another before & after reading the challenge books. I also started and DNFd a book. So I will mention them first.

bsed-square-orig

I started the audiobook for Winter before the ReadAThon and finished it during.

36682619.jpg

After finishing the 4 ReadAThon challenges I started the audiobook for Daughter of the Siren Queen. I didn’t finish it during the ReadAThon though.

9781408890493

This is the book that I started and DNFd. This was originally meant to be for the first challenge. I started this book, found it utterly boring and beyond confusing and DNFd at 16%. As I had only read a small amount of the book I couldn’t count it for a completed challenge. So I choose a different book for that.

Now onto the ReadAThon challenges!

The path I followed was

5 > 8 > A > 9

5: CALM BEFORE THE STORM – THE FIRST IN A SERIES

518wO5nDXIL._SL500_.jpg

This is the first book in the Hercule Poirot series by Agatha Christie. This was the book I substituted in after DNFing A Shot in the Dark.

8: YO HO HO! – BOOK THAT STARTS WITH ‘RRRRRR’

61FNM2HnNyL._SL500_

A: MAROONED: STANDALONE

51vkX3TwXUL._SL500_

9: BLOW DOWN THE MAN – A BOOK BY A WOMAN AUTHOR

61x8KxGlBDL._SL500_

After reading/DNFing A Shot in the Dark it put me in a bit of a slump and I didn’t want to pick up anything. So I swapped out the book I was originally going to read The Theft and the Miracle for a random audiobook that I already had on Scribd. This is the one I chose.

Goodreads Synopsis (1)

I love the covers of these books. They are so colourful and fun as most Middle Grade covers are. Each cover also represents each book really well and gives you an idea of the type of creatures and things that will be dealt with in each book.

Goodreads Synopsis (2)

I really enjoyed the writing. It was so easy and fun to read. The books are really quick to read too which was good and bad. Good because they go by quickly but bad because I want more!! I love the friendships in this book so much and also the families. We have some awesome family dynamics in this book which I love! It is so rare to see awesome families in books. There is a very strong friendship/family theme to these books as well as caring for creatures and helping people/animals that can’t help themselves. These were all great messages/themes and made the book extremely enjoyable.

Goodreads Synopsis (3)

The plot is so fun! There is always something going on in these books. There are tonnes of twists and turns to keep you engaged in the story. For the most part, I didn’t find these books too predictable. There were a couple times I guessed but it was usually just before the truth was revealed anyway. It didn’t affect the enjoyability of the books at all though. As all three books involve a mystery it is fun trying to guess what is going on.

Goodreads Synopsis (4)

There is a tonne of characters in these books and I love all of them except the ‘bad guys’ obviously, but I can also see how well done those bad guys were done. For my opinions on Zoe, Logan & Blue have a look at my review for The Menagerie. As for the other characters I enjoyed most of them, as there are so many I will just do a sentence or two for each. Just be warned some of these characters kinda give away spoilers for the series as there is a tonne of mystery around some of these characters. I won’t talk about any of the bad guys though as that will completely spoil the books.

Marco was such an amusing character, I loved his humour and his obsession with Keiko.
Keiko is exactly how you would expect a proud mythical creature that can turn human to act. It still really funny watching her react to people.
Jasmin was bitchy at the start, but I get it, she was still angry and confused and reacted accordingly. But in the end, she was fun and just took everything in her stride.
Elsie we see very little of but I enjoyed her a lot. She is Aussie for one thing!
Matthew, I was suspicious of at the start but he was also an interesting character and was always there for his family and the animals.
Ruby was just a stuck up, up herself, delusional character.
Mr. & Mrs. Kahn, Zoe’s parents, are awesome, you already know I love the family in these books. Mrs. Kahn is fun, determined and very loving. Mr. Kahn was just as cool and loving.
Mr. Wilde, Logan’s Dad was a cool addition to the story. He loved his son, but his main focus was on finding his wife who disappeared. He was loving, caring and a little obsessed.
Abigal is a kinda badass mythical creature tracker, which is awesome!
Miss Sameera is funny and a little crazy at times. She is really amusing though and I enjoyed her in the end.
Melissa is always serious and proper and it’s so funny when shit doesn’t go correctly and she starts worrying and getting new paperwork ready to fix the problem.

I also LOVE all the magical creatures. So many of them have really amusing and fun personalities which just added so much to the story!

Goodreads Synopsis (5)

These books are amazing! They are so fun and adventurous. The books are so quick and easy to read. The world is amazing and the characters are superb. The friendships and family relationships are the best! I really wish there was more to this series! I want to see everyday life with all the characters looking after the menagerie creatures!

Scallywagathon Round 2 TBR

Header Image (5)

Okay, so some of you may remember me participating in round 1 back in November and guess what it is happening again! This ReadAThon was not on my May ReadAThon Guide as it was only announced 2 days ago. I am going to copy and paste the info section from my the round 1 TBR as it is all working the same, the only difference is the challenges. This ReadAThon is pretty complex and can be confusing, so I hope my explanation helps you!

Blog titles (22)

This ReadAThon starts at midnight on the 20th of May & ends at 11:59 on the 27th of May.

You can watch Ali’s video HERE for a whole in depth desrciption of the ReadAThon along with an example TBR but I am going to try and explain it!

Firstly, the map!

*This was taken from the link in Ali’s video.*

Screen Shot 2018-05-13 at 11.51.58 am

Every number and letter on the map corresponds to a challenge in the graphic below!
Okay, so how this map works is first you pick a number between 1 & 5. Once you pick your starting point you follow the corresponding coloured line to the next challenge. Most of them have more than one option you can choose from. Then when you get to your first stop you then follow that number or letter’s corresponding coloured line to the next challenge until you get to the treasure chest. All of the tracks you take will have 4 challenges but if you finish those 4 in the week you are welcome to continue onto any of the other challenges you wish.
So, here is an example of how to navigate the map. I am going to start at 1, from there I will follow the dark purple line to 6, from there I will follow the orange line to A and then from A I will follow the dark blue line to 9 and then to the treasure! Hopefully, that makes sense.

This is an Adult Mystery that I received an ARC of and need to read by the end of June. This one comes out 28th of June in Aus.

8: Yo Ho Ho! – Book that starts with ‘RRRRRR’

Rise of Fire by Sophie Jordan

61FNM2HnNyL._SL500_

This is the second book in the Reign of Shadows duology. I listened to Reign of Shadows a while ago and really enjoyed it! Reign of Shadows is a dark Rapunzel retelling and it ended on a rather large cliffhanger so I’m keen to continue.

A: Marooned: Standalone

Endless Night by Agatha Christie

51vkX3TwXUL._SL500_

There is a heap of Agatha Christie books on Scribd, so I hunted through her standalones and came up with this one!

9: Blow down the man – A book by a woman author

The Theft and the Miracle by Rebecca Wade

y450-293 (4)

This is one of the books I am reading for the Book to School challenge. It is also by a female author, so perfect!!
