For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

I really like the cover of this book! I love the colours and the design is interesting. I also love the colour of the naked hardback! The edition I have has the blue solid coloured hardback and I love the colour! I do also love the other edition with the colourful hardback too! But I won this book in a giveaway so I am definitely not complaining about which edition I got.

I really enjoyed the writing of this book! I have never read anything by Marie Lu, so I didn’t know what to expect but I know a lot of people enjoy her writing and book. The writing was beautiful but easy to understand. The writing flowed well too and was never dull. I liked the writing from the POV of Emika too including the addition of info from the past.

The plot was fast-paced and engaging. I did find it a bit predictable at times but for the most part, it was good.

I really liked the diversity of this book. There are all different races present in the book. There was a character in a wheelchair. There were also two male characters that were hinted at having a previous relationship, but their actual sexuality was never said. I enjoyed that they didn’t make a big deal about any of these diversities, they were just seen as normal.

I enjoyed Emika, she is a badass hacker and bounty hunter. She was interesting and as I said I liked reading from her POV. I didn’t like the romance in this book though, and it was isnta lovey.

I did enjoy the other characters on the Pheonix Riders but I feel like I need to get to know them more. There wasn’t a lot of downtime spent with the team, so the only time was during comps that we got to know them and it wasn’t enough for me to connect with them. Hopefully, I will be able to form better opinions of them in the next book.

I enjoyed the world and the idea of this book! The world of Warcross is really cool and reminded me a lot of the game in Ready Player One, I can’t remember what it’s called. The book was a little predictable and I guessed the identity of Zero fairly early in the book. The writing was really well done and easy to understand. I enjoyed the MC but need more on the other characters. I am really looking forward to the next book to see what happen’s next!

  1. I love the cover of this book too, I’ve seen it in bookstores a few times and it always stands out! I don’t usually read sci-fi (?) but this actually sounds pretty good! I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂

  2. This was such a ridiculously fast read, haha! I read it in a day and am craving more of Lu’s writing ever since. Still haven’t ordered more of her work – book buying ban, whooo – but definitely planning on it.
Also can’t wait for the sequel so we find out what’s going to happen next!
