December 2017 TBR

Header Image

Here is my November TBR! I have been in a bit of a slump lately so this TBR is probably a tad ambitious. I will be putting which books I will be concentrating on and then what other books I might read if I finish those. I will be participating in 1 ReadAThon and that is the last Duodecathon which is from Christmas day until the end of the month.

This is an ARC that I am currently reading!

Scholastic_HP_Azkaban_Illustrated_Cover

Due to being in a bit of a slump I decided to reread a Harry Potter book and seen as I recently got the illustrated Prisoner of Azkaban I decided to reread it via illustrated!

3e7fbf41d8b46a43d7ba45f208fa904d.jpg

This is just the Harry Potter audiobook that I am up to. It’s a bit odd reading 2 Harry Potter books at once but I’m enjoying it.

This is the BOTM for my facebook group The YA Book Nerds!

This is another ARC I have that I need to read before the 15th which is the release date.

AoA-final-cover-666x1024.png

This is the sequel to an ARC that I need to read that releases in Feb 2018 and it’s also a 2017 debut so I am using it for a Duodecathon challenge.

Ruin and Rising is for Duodecathon. The challenge is read the first book on your shelf that you haven’t read. So, I just went to the top left of my TBR shelves and it was Ruin and Rising. But as I haven’t read Siege and Storm which comes before it I am going to have to read it before the Duodecathon.

the-lost-city-of-z-9781471164910_hr

I didn’t get to read it during the November Duodecathon so I will have to read it in December.

These are all ARCs that I need to read.

That is it! Hopefully I will at least get the first books read!

What’s on your December TBR?!

November 2017 Duodecathon Wrap Up

Header Image (25)

So, this month went crap! For the last week and a half I have been in such a slump! I have been pushing myself the last couple months with crazy amounts of ReadAThons and I think I burnt myself out a bit. So I have been taking it slow for the last week and hopefully, I will be back soon. I have also decided that the only ReadAThon I will do in December is Duodecathon to try and finish all the challenges.

Blog Title (59)

I started this well before the ReadAThon began but I finished it during the ReadAThon

36389337

I did start this a couple hours before the ReadAThon began but I was feeling like reading and when you are in a slump, you don’t say no to the reading urge. But I am counting it still. I read this book for the challenge ‘A book that has to do with travelling’ as there are tonnes of travelling around and moving around in this book.

Blog Title (61)

Here is how I’m going so far with the challenges (ones in bold I have completed)

Read 1,200 pages
Start OR finish a series
A 2017 debut author
A short story
A Graphic Novel
A Non-Fiction book
A Book that has been on your TBR for 2+ years
A book with multiple authors
A book you picked up because of the cover
A book that has to do with travelling
Someone else’s favourite book
The first book on your shelf you haven’t read

And, that is all! I have 3 challenges left and hopefully I will be about to get those finished in December!

Magic is risen.

When magic returned to the world, it could have saved humanity, but greed and thirst for power caused mankind’s downfall instead. Now once-human monsters called Howls prowl abandoned streets, their hunger guided by corrupt necromancers and the all-powerful Kin. Only Hunters have the power to fight back in the unending war, using the same magic that ended civilization in the first place.

But they are losing.

Tenn is a Hunter, resigned to fight even though hope is nearly lost. When he is singled out by a seductive Kin named Tomas and the enigmatic Hunter Jarrett, Tenn realizes he’s become a pawn in a bigger game. One that could turn the tides of war. But if his mutinous magic and wayward heart get in the way, his power might not be used in favor of mankind.

If Tenn fails to play his part, it could cost him his friends, his life…and the entire world.

Blog Title (10)

Well, I don’t love it. As I have said many times before, I don’t like covers with people on them and that is still the case with this one. But it’s not horrible, at least the character is how he is described in the book! Well as much as we can see of him anyway.

Blog Title (11)

The writing took some getting used to. I prefer 1st person POV is most cases but this book was 3rd person POV and it was a little hard to follow at times. Also, there wasn’t a huge amount of explanation in this book which annoyed me and I will talk about that a bit more in the plot section of the review.

Blog Title (12)

Okay, so it wasn’t the best. It felt very tropey (I’m making that a word, okay?!) and it also felt similar to other books I have read! At the time I was also listening to the audiobook of Half Lost by Sally Green and I felt like they were similar. I don’t know if it was that they are both following the Chosen One trope to some degree, magic and both had GLBT main characters. I don’t know exactly, but it was a weird similarity.

Also, on the topic of the Choose One Trope, it was never explained as to why exactly he was chosen. Maybe this will be explained further is book 2 but after finishing this one I am none the wiser which is annoying! I would have liked even a little bit of explanation or a theory as to why like is done in most Chosen One books!

I also found the book a bit predictable! As soon as a certain thing happened I thought ‘I bet ……. will happen’ and then a hundred pages or so later it did and I guess you could call it one of the big plot twists. There were also a fair few other things I guessed too! It doesn’t make for an extremely exciting book if I’m guessing most things that happen.

Blog Title (13)

So this will be the smallest characters section I have ever written! Because of the 3rd person POV I feel like I still don’t know the characters and I definitely didn’t connect with any of them!

So this is the small opinion of I have of each of the major characters
Tenn was okay, a little annoying at times
Jarrett was okay but felt like the kinda typical charming, attractive love interest
Tomàs was just creepy and they way he spoke was infuriating
Dreya was pretty cool, she was a bit of a badass I guess
Devon was also the typical badass but shy/quiet character
Leanna was simply the typical bad guy character

Yes, I am using the word typical a lot.

Overall, there wasn’t too much that impressed me about this book. I didn’t hate anything but it was just a little ‘meh’ for me. The writing wasn’t my favourite. The plot was predictable and felt like the same thing I have already read 10 times. The characters were unimpressive and there was only one charactre that I actually really liked which was Dreya.

I was provided with an eGalley of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you very much to Harlequin (Australia) TEEN & NetGalley for this opportunity.

I am sorry for the possible errors and the design of this blog post! Also why half my post is centred and the other is on the left side. I was half way through writing my review and the internet stopped working! Ever since they started putting the NBN lines done in my area in Aus, the normal network has been playing up something shocking! Extremely slow and not even working half the time! NBN won’t be fully connected in my area till May or something next year! So there is a large possibility that I will have to put up with the shit for a few months yet! So as I was half way through writing my review and it was failing to save a draft I had to copy and paste it to a pages document and send it to my phone. Luckily that went through! I then had to finish it off on my phone. Hopefully all the links will be working and everything will be fine but I just don’t know. I also don’t know how it’s going to go uploading this review to my NetGalley account now! Thank goodness for Copy & Paste!!

**Internet is working now and I have fixed the errors**

Read-A-Thon Guide – December 2017

Header Image (23)

I’m back for another monthly ReadAThon guide! Let’s get into this!

At the moment I am planning on doing Duodecathon!

Blog Title (15)

This ReadAThon occurs every month and each month there is a different focus on what to read.

So this ReadAThon has 2 parts, first, there is the theme. So the idea is to try and read books related to that theme and then there are the challenges, they are an extra challenge. I am not sure whether you have to try and find a challenge that fits into that month theme or whether you just read two separate books for each.

HERE is a link to their Goodreads page

This ReadAThon happens every month so here are all the future challenges in case you wanted to plan!

4-10 December: 2017 Debuts
Read the last book (or books) you bought

Blog Title (16).png

This ReadAThon also is every month. This one has 12 options for challenges that you can pick from and the idea of this is that you participate every month and by the end of the year you will have done them all.

You can find info and join the Goodreads group HERE.

UPCOMING DATES:

December 25-31

CHALLENGES TO PICK FROM:

Read 1,200 pages
Start OR finish a series
A 2017 debut author
A short story
A Graphic Novel
A Non-Fiction book
A Book that has been on your TBR for 2+ years
A book with multiple authors
A book you picked up because of the cover
A book that has to do with travelling
Someone else’s favourite book
The first book on your shelf you have read

Blog Title (51)

Okay, so this looks like a new ReadAThon and there is very little info on it! All I can tell is that it goes for the first week of December, so that would be 1st-7th.

You can find their Twitter HERE!

Blog Title (52)

HarryChristmasToYou is a month long ReadAWatchALongAThon! So basically you read the books and watch the movies! You can read as many of the books as you can in the month! You do not have to read them all, just as much as you can. This might be a time to do a reread using the first 3 illustrated editions seen as Prisoner of Azkaban just came out!

Now I am assuming this will be on this year! There isn’t an announcement video up yet for this year, they still have last years pinned to the top of the page. But there are hints in the other Tweets that it is on. All my information is based on how it has worked in previous years.

For the WatchALongAThon part there will be a different youtuber for each book & movie and they will be posting on Twitter when to watch the movies if you want to watch them at the same time as everyone else.

There is also usually Video challenges, Trivia Nights and a house cup! You can win points from heaps of different things and then everyone in the winning house will go in the draw to win a prize!

You can find their Twitter HERE!

Blog Title (53)

AVeryMerryReadAThon is a christmas themed ReadAThon that is pretty laid back! There are only 3 reading challenges and the ReadAThon goes for 5 days. You can also use one  book for multiple challenges, so if you are really talented you could read 1 book and complete the ReadAThon!

HERE is the announcement post!

The ReadAThon will take place from midnight on the 4th till 11:59pm on the 8th of December.

Challenges:

Read a book that takes place during the holidays
Read a book with a Christmas colour/s on the cover
Read a book just because you want to

You can find their Twitter HERE! And if you are talking about the ReadAThon on Twitter make sure you tag them and use the hashtag #AVeryMerryReadathon on other social media.

Blog Title (54)

Okay, so as far as I can tell this week long ReadAThon is aimed at your currently reading books and trying to get that number down as we go into the new year! So this would be exculsively for people that start multiple books and don’t finish them. I would not be able to participate as I just don’t do that, I’m a one book at a time kind of person. She also said in the announcement that this is a ReadAThon to finally finish those books or DNF them completely. But I’t if it still counts as completing a challenge if you DNF.

The ReadAThon takes place from midnight on the 11th till 11:59pm on the 17th of November.

There are challenges for this ReadAThon but you don’t have to complete them. Obviously, because you are restricted to books you have already started you simply may not have a book that fits a certain challenge, so that is fine. You can also use one book for more than one challenge.

Challenges:

Finish a book that you put down over a year ago
Finish a book you put down sometime this year
Finish a book that you put down at halfway
Finish a book you are actively reading
(so not one that you put down a while ago and just haven’t finished.)
Finish 5 books

You can find their Twitter HERE!

Blog Title (55)

The Cramathon is a week long ReadAThon happening after Christmas and crosses over a little into Janurary! The Cramathon has reading challenges.

The ReadAThon takes place from midnight on the 26th of December and finished at 11:59pm on the 2nd of January.

You can find the Twitter page HERE! Also HERE is Ali’s announcement video!

Reading Challenges:

A book with under 200 pages
A book with LGBTQIAP+ rep
The shortest book on your TBR
A book with your favourite colour on the cover
A book that was gifted to you
One of the hosts’ favourite short books (If you can’t get your hands on one of these then you can choose a book that a friend recommended.)
– The Grownup by Gillian Flynn (64 pages)
– Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott (169 pages)
– George by Alex Gino (208 pages)
– And Every Morning The Way Home Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrick Backman (96 pages)
Read 7 books.

Blog Title (56)

This is a month long ReadAThon, but I would actually call it a challenge too. Basically all you have to do is try and read as many diverse books as possible in the month of December. You don’t have to read only diverse books but the challenge is just here to encourage you to read more diverse books!

HERE is the announcement post on Books & Munches Blog!

All you have to do is make a blog post saying you are participating and your possible reads! Pretty simple right?! Make sure you use the hashtag #diversedecember when posting on social media.

This ReadAThon is a 12 day ‘choose your own adventure’ ReadAThon with so much going on!! But I will get to all that!

This ReadAThon goes from midnight on the 13th to 11:59pm on the 24th of December!

Firstly there are challenges! This works in a map system similar to the map of the Scallywagathon! So you start at the bottom and when you reach the top you have finished! There are signposts all over the map which have challenges on them. Whenever you get to one, that is the challenge you complete. Some of the signposts are on intersections and you have a choice of which path (and challenge) to take. I will insert the map below. There are also 2 examples in their blog post if you wish to see them.

**All pictures are from novelthoughts.co**

Xmas_Readathon_Map

** Save the photo and zoom in if you are having trouble reading the signposts**

As you can see, there are only single words on the signposts. Each of them links to a challenge which you can find in the image below.

IMG_0328

Depending on which path you take you will land on 1 of 4 characters. These characters match 1 of the 4 ‘houses’ which you are part of for the House Cup part if you wish to take place, this is optional.

Make sure you post a TBR on your blog or social media and say if you are participating in the House Cup challenge and which ‘house’ you are in. Use the tag #holidayadventureathon when posting your TBR! There are 4 separate hashtags for each of the houses to share just with your house! They are #holidaypenguin #holidayreindeer #holidayelf & #holdaysnowman

There are heaps of ways to earn posts for your house! I will copy and past them direct from the AdventureAThon post below!

  • Posting YouTube videos about your readathon experience. (20p)
Can be: TBR videos, reading updates, daily or weekly vlogs, wrap up videos.
  • Posting blogs about your readathon experience. (20p)
Can be: TBR posts, reading updates, wrap ups.
  • Posting photos of your TBR or reading progress. (10p)

November 2017 Duodecathon TBR

Header Image (24)

Here is my TBR for this months Duodecathon. This month it goes from the 22nd until the 28th!

So if you don’t know the duodecathon is a monthly ReadAThon. There are challenges for this ReadAThon but the cool thing about this one is you have the option to pick from 12 challenges. So there are 12 challenges for the 12 months of the year and the idea is that you participate each month, selecting a new challenge so that by the end of the year you have completed all the 12 challenges!

CHALLENGES TO PICK FROM:

Read 1,200 pages
Start OR finish a series
A 2017 debut author
A short story
A Graphic Novel
A Non-Fiction book
A Book that has been on your TBR for 2+ years
A book with multiple authors
A book you picked up because of the cover
A book that has to do with travelling
Someone else’s favourite book
The first book on your shelf you haven’t read

The ones in bold above have already been completed

I am trying to do 2 or more challenges per month to get them all done by the end of the year as I only started in June. So, for this month, I’m choosing A 2017 debut author & A non-fiction book.

Blog Title (21)

36389337

This is the book that I’m currently reading and I hope to get to about half way by tonight. This doesn’t count for any of challenges.

51rYtDTTduL

This one also doesn’t count for a challenge in the Duodecathon but it does count for the eBook and Favourite emoji challenge for the Read-A-Thin.

32144770

This one is for the challenge 2017 debut as it released in July and I received an ARC of it.

the-lost-city-of-z-9781471164910_hr

This one counts for the challenge of Non-Fiction. I originally didn’t think I would get this challenge done as I don’t really read non-fiction. But then I came across this book and it sounds extremely interesting I decided to do it!

So that is my TBR! Let me know if you are participating too!

She will become a legend but first she is Diana, Princess of the Amazons. And her fight is just beginning…

Diana is desperate to prove herself to her warrior sisters. But when the opportunity comes, she throws away her chance at glory and breaks Amazon law to save a mere mortal, Alia Keralis. With this single heroic act, Diana may have just doomed the world.

Alia is a Warbringer – a descendant of the infamous Helen of Troy, fated to bring about an age of bloodshed and misery. Diana and Alia will face an army of enemies, mortal and divine, determined to destroy or possess the Warbringer.

To save the world, they must stand side by side against the tide of war.

Even though I don’t like covers with people on them I do like this one. For most books, the reason I don’t like people on the cover is mostly because I like to be able to imagine what the characters look like and half the time the person on the cover doesn’t even fit the description, which I cannot stand! But as we already know what Wonder Woman looks like it didn’t bother me in this case.

Blog Title (11)

I really enjoy Leigh Bardugo’s writing. I have only read 2 of her books, this one & Shadow and Bone and I enjoyed the writing on both. The only thing I struggled with was the all of the gods and stuff like that. I don’t know a heap about mythology so that was a tad confusing but not bad.

Blog Title (12)

Going into the book I thought this was kinda going to be a typical superhero type story but it was so much more than that. There were plenty of twists and turns in this book and I wasn’t expecting any of them.

Blog Title (13)

I really enjoyed Diana! She was such an interesting character and I loved seeing her in the modern world. It was just so funny her experiencing new things and her reactions to things that are normal to us. And of course, she was brave, selfless and badass. We knew that was going to be the case obviously!

Alia was also an enjoyable character but I didn’t love her as much as Diana. She was a little dramatic sometimes and it was slightly annoying but in the end she was a good character. She was strong and would do whatever it took to stop the war even if it meant sacrificing herself.

Jason, Alia’s brother, I did not enjoy even before we actually met him. Just from Alia describing him I didn’t like him. He was controlling, selfish and treated his sister like crap. And also the romance is bullshit. Absolutely hated it. I’m not a romance fan, to begin with, but this was horrible.

Theo was a little annoying at the start. His humour at the start is just not what I enjoy. But overall I did enjoy him!

Nim I also enjoyed. She was smartass and funny as and I loved it. I also love that she is diverse! She is lesbian and her reaction to Diana was really funny too!

Blog Title (14)

Overall I really enjoyed this book! I loved the characters, well except Jason. The plot was really well done and so unpredictable. The writing was really good too even though I had a bit of trouble with the mythology aspects as they were a bit confusing. I really wish there was going to be an actual sequel to this book. It’s obviously part of a series but the next book will be a companion more than an actual sequel I’m guessing as it’s about Batman.

Book Series I really Need to Finish & I Will Not Be Finishing

Header Image (21)

I have been meaning to do this post for a while! I decided a couple months ago to set myself a goal to finish 7 series by the end of the year. But now that there is only just over a month to go, I can see that it’s not going to happen. I had good plans but then BOTMs popped up as I started joining more groups and starting my own Facebook bookish group The YA Book Nerds. Then there was also ARCs and most of those are first books in the series. So I know I won’t be finishing 7 series this year! As I was going to wait until I did this little challenge to write this post and now I know I’m not going to get it finished I figured I may as well write it now!

First I will just list the series I need to finish and then I will list the ones that I won’t be finishing and a little explanation as to why I won’t be continuing.

**For the series I need to finish, this list will only include series that all the books have been released. I may do a separate post later on series I need to catch up on.**

What I won’t be reading: City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls & City of Heavenly Fire

I have no better reason than I was bored reading the first two books. They were okay, but I just wasn’t interested in them and I will never understand how people compare them to the Harry Potter series. I just don’t get the hype and I’m not interested in completing this seires just so I can go read the other 2 companion series which are meant to be better. If it was one more book I might think about it but I’m not pushing myself through 4 more books in the hopes that it may get better.

2. Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Have read: Me Before You
What I won’t be reading: After You

I didn’t find this book emotional at all. That’s basically it. This book is written to be ‘sad’ and if you don’t like sad books then it basically has nothing for you. The book was predictable and half of the book I was just waiting for the thing to hurry up and get over with. I did like that we had a diverse character and a lot of people said it was ‘eye-opening’ but as I explain in my review for it, that wasn’t the case for me as I have close experience with someone in a wheelchair and I completely understood all the struggles that showed when it comes to being around someone in a wheelchair. So even though I was glad they included it, I didn’t get anything out of that. Also, that diverse factor will be gone in book 2 as that certain person will no longer be present. So I don’t really know what the point of book 2 would be except to be sad.. Which I doubt I would even have that opinion if I did read it..

3. Rondo by Emily Rodda

Have read: The Key to Rondo & The Wizard of Rondo
What I won’t be reading: The Battle for Rondo

This series was just kinda going downhill. The first book was good, not a favourite. Then the second book was just okay. I only picked up The Key to Rondo because I used to own it when I was a kid, I remember I bought it at one of those Scholastic Book Fairs when I was in Primary School. I tried reading it a few times when I was younger but never finished it as I would just loose interest. I hardly ever read at this point. Then I decided to give it another go, I think, last year and made it through it and the next book but they still never fully grasped my interest. So I won’t be continuing. I also honestly don’t remember a thing about the book except that its a boy and his cousin who is really stuck up and there is a talking pig. That’s all I remember.

4. Flame in the Mist by Renée Ahdieh

Have read: Flame in the Mist
What I won’t be reading: Smoke in the Sun

I just did not like Flame in the Mist. I hated the romance and didn’t love the characters. I did not enjoy the third person POV that the book was in, I felt disconnected from the book and the characters… Also, the ‘magic’ system is basically nonexistent. If I’m going to read something labelled as an ‘amazing fantasy’, I want to see some legitimate fantasy elements!

5. The Nevernight Chronicles by Jay Kristoff

Have read: Nevernight
What I won’t be reading: Godsgrave & Book 3 (unnamed)

Another book I just didn’t love. The book was really confusing to start off with as it swaps between past and present. There is nothing at all to suggest that its past and present and I honestly thought it was two different people to start off with. The plot was okay, but didn’t blow me away and neither did the world. The characters were also okay, I liked them but they weren’t outstanding or very memorable. This book just didn’t grasp my attention enough for me to want to continue.

6. The Wolves of Mercy Falls by Maggie Stiefvater

Have read: Shiver, Linger & Forever
What I won’t be reading: Sinner

Okay, so this was one of those series that were meant to be a trilogy but then it became kinda popular and a few years later the author decides to write a companion or add on to the series. Sometimes I love when this happened and sometimes I just don’t care. I have read the full trilogy but I didn’t like any of the books. They were insta lovey, cheesy, predictable and basically everything I don’t want to read about in a Paranormal fantasy. I owned all three books so I decided to read them all, they were also really quick, so it wasn’t an issue reading all 3 as it took me under a week to read all 3.

7. Stormheart by Cora Carmack

Have read: Roar
What I won’t be reading: Rage

This is a maybe not read. I did like the world and the writing. But I didn’t like the romance at all. I also did not like basically any of the male characters. There was so much sexism and negative views of the male characters and I couldn’t stand them.

8. The School For Good and Evil by Soman Chainani

Have read: The School from Good and Evil
What I won’t be reading: A World without Princes & The Last Ever After

I am just goint to link my review of The School for Good and Evil.. I don’t even want to talk about this book. HERE is the review

So that is all! What books do you really need to get to? What series are you DNFing?!
