This week’s prompt is: Books Without Romance
— A few (very, very few) people complained about the “shipping” topics lately, so I thought it would be good to talk about books that don’t have a romantic subplot! This is a really hard one, so if you can’t find any, you can talk about some where the romance is super super minor. Like barely mentioned… at all…
So I haven’t actually read 5 books without romance or with very little, so I’m going with books on my TBR that are meant to have no romance. I basically just googled ‘YA with no romance’ so if any of this actually have a romance in them then let me know! I haven’t read them yet obviously so I don’t actually know if the no romance part is true.
1. The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
2. Eon by Alison Goodman
3. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
4. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
5. This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab
Well that is all for this weeks Top 5 Wednesday!
Queen of the Tearling doesn’t have romance?! I may need to bump this up on the TBR list then! Lol

Apparently not and same here! Definitely soon, after my book buying ban is lifted.

See I’m the opposite. I can’t stand romance based books… so all of this is right up my alley. I don’t mind if there is a romance in a book as long as it doesn’t over shine the plot of a book. Can’t stand that.

Wow 😂 That’s really interesting. I can’t think of a book i read that doesn’t have romance. The first Harry Potter book? The maze runner series, too. That’s pretty much it 😂

I jut have never been a person that has given a single damn about other people’s love lives and I think that translates to my reading. Like it’s okay if it’s just there but I can’t stand it being a focus because I just stop caring and then the book looses interest for me.
I struggled so much reading the ACOTAR series, I was honestly continuing DNFing the series after ACOTAR because it is sooo romance based. But I just kinda ignored or skipped over those parts in the end and I enjoyed the book series but if I had taken the romance side of it into consideration it probably would have only got a 3 star rating from me. I just don’t see why basically every book has to be so romances based all the time, it really frustrates me.

Queen of the Tearling does not have romance in the first book, but it does in the second, kind of. I also think This Savage Song has it, at least in the second book (but don’t quote me on that!)
Still, great list!

Thanks for letting me know. As long as it’s not to romance driven then it doesn’t bother me. Will just have to read them and find out haha. 😊

This Savage Song is great!! The second book Our Dark duet has a tiny bit of romance but it’s contained to one paragraph and honestly I was expecting something like it to happen. However don’t let it put you off because it is a fabulous book!

Yeah I don’t mind at all if it’s only a little as long as it doesn’t over take the plot of the story. Will definitely be picking up This Savage Song soon as I won it in a giveaway! 😁😁

Oh it really doesn’t take over so no worries there.

No problem. I’m the same in wanting more books without romance as the main plot point. I find it really irritating and repetitive nowadays. I do have certain exceptions but the majority of the time I’m looking for something romance-free.

100% agree with you. It’s just so overwhelming with all the romance sometimes.

I find it worse in YA Contemporaries and I rarely pick them up now because of it. Any I do read and have read recently are romance free, and whilst they touch on hard-hitting subjects instead, it is incredibly refreshing. I just wish there were more! xx

I steer clear of most contemporaries for the same reason and the ones I read are usually diverse contemporaries in some way. The only one I have read recently that wasn’t diverse was Geekerella but the concept of it intrigued me and I did love all the references in it. I just had to kinda mentally prepare myself not to just straight up dislike it because of the romance haha.
There needs to be more! Not everything in life is about romance, can we have more friendship and family type books! That’s why I’m really love the Medoran series that I’m reading so far, only a slight hint of romance so far the rest is about friendship and fantasy 😍

Geekerella would be one of my exceptions since it is a Cinderella retelling. But I completely agree with you. I’m currently reading Rebel of the Sands (though I’ve not got very far) and I have no idea if it has any romance in it or not. I’ll have to wait and see.

I have read Rebel of the Sands and I can say that there is romance but it doesn’t overtake the plot too much, it’s just kinda there.
Rebel of the Sands was my favourite book of last year and Traitor to the Throne was my fave of this year until I read Strange The Dreamer haha. It’s a great series and it’s apparently being turned into a movie. I hope it’s done well. Apparently Will Smiths wife’s production company has got the film rights and Willow might be playing Amani.

Ah that’s fine by me! I also didn’t realise it was being made into a film. If it does happen, that could be interesting to see.

I only found out a little while ago myself as I saw a link on twitter I think.
They also released the name of the third book a few days ago ‘Hero at the Fall’ in so keen!

I also noticed that on Twitter a few days ago. I think that was one of the reasons why I decided to start reading the series.

That’s fair enough. I can’t wait for book 3! But I also don’t want the series to end! 😫
