When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something frightening enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that had killed most of America’s children, but she and the others emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they could not control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones. When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. She is on the run, desperate to find the only safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who have escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents. When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at having a life worth living.

At first I had no idea what this cover was, but now after reading the book I believe that it is the symbol of the psi. I think anyway it was only described once and I didn’t think much of it until now. So this book cover isn’t exactly pretty or nice to look at but it links directly to the book, which I like.

Blog Titles (2)

The writing is descriptive and easy to read. It draws you in very quickly and you can’t help but get hooked on the story! I don’t recall any point where I was confused at about parts of the book, everything was described easily which made the world easy to to follow.

It would have been nice to have a map in this book as there is a lot of travelling and I enjoy following journeys on the maps inside books. This book is an Urban Fantasy, so it is based in the real world, so I could have just looked up a map on google, but it would have been nice to have one in the book. They kept mentioning names of towns and cities and states and even though I have heard of some of them, I still have no idea where they are. It might have been easier if I lived in America, but being Australian I only really know where the major places are, I don’t know where certain states are. So yeah, a  map would have made it easier for me to follow the moving around.

This plot is very well done! There is so much action involved basically from the start of the book, the first chapter or so is mainly Ruby’s memories, but after that it jumps straight in!

This book is a dystopian, I haven’t read a dystopian for a while and I was really hoping going into this that it would be similar to the likes of The Hunger Games & Divergent and it wasn’t! There is still a female MC but that’s about where it ends with the similarities. So I really enjoyed the uniqueness of this book. It’s classed as a Sci-Fi, but it is also kinda fantasy as these kids have ‘powers’, I don’t really know where the line is drawn between Sci-Fi and Fantasy books but this one is somewhere in between! Which is I think what made it different from the other dystopias I have read as none of them have that fantasy type element.

I enjoyed Ruby and really liked see her learn about the world outside Thurmond and grow as a character. She is very protective and wants to help others but she isn’t completely selfless, which make her that bit more realistic. Chubs is just hilarious, he is so sarcastic and witty and funny and even though at the start he was a bit rude and defensive, he was just trying to protect Zu & Liam as he knows that Liam can be a bit to willing to see the good in people and doesn’t see the evil there straight away. So I liked that about him, that he was wary and didn’t just welcome Ruby with open arms! I really like Zu, she can be fun and energetic when she isn’t letting everything eat her up inside. I really liked Zu and Ruby’s friendship while they were travelling. Liam is also a really enjoyable character, he does have a bit of a flaw as I mentioned just before, he is too trusting at times. He is loyal though and is just trying to keep them safe and keep to his promises. Clancy I didn’t like from the start and I always had a funny feeling about. I won’t continue because of spoilers with him! But let’s just say I strongly dislike him.

Blog Titles (5)

Overall I really enjoyed this book! I’m keen to continue on with this series! I do have an eBook of book #1.5 which is called In Time, so I might read that now, depending on how I feel or I will read it before picking up the next book in the series, Never Fade.

I was considering purchasing the Novella bind up, Through the Dark, that includes the 3 Novellas, In Time (#1.5), Sparks Rise (#2.5) and a new one which is #3.5 but I don’t know if that name of it is Through the Dark or whether it is called something else, because it’s not on Goodreads. The only problem with buying the bind up is only the hardcover is available on Book Depository and I have the paperback of The Darkest Minds and I want to get all paperbacks so they match. So instead I just bought the iBook of the first novella for $1.99 and I can probably get the next for a similar price. Then if it comes out in paperback I will grab the bind up so that I can read that last one that you can only get in the bind up!

Also, check out Alexandra Bracken’s newest book! The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding is a Middle Grade Fantasy and set to release the 5th of September and sounds so interesting!

Blog Titles

“I would say it’s a pleasure to meet thee, Prosperity Oceanus Redding, but truly, I only anticipate the delights of destroying thy happiness.”

Prosper is the only unexceptional Redding in his old and storied family history — that is, until he discovers the demon living inside him. Turns out Prosper’s great-great-great-great-great-something grandfather made — and then broke — a contract with a malefactor, a demon who exchanges fortune for eternal servitude. And, weirdly enough, four-thousand-year-old Alastor isn’t exactly the forgiving type.

The fiend has reawakened with one purpose — to destroy the family whose success he ensured and who then betrayed him. With only days to break the curse and banish Alastor back to the demon realm, Prosper is playing unwilling host to the fiend, who delights in tormenting him with nasty insults and constant attempts trick him into a contract. Yeah, Prosper will take his future without a side of eternal servitude, thanks.

Little does Prosper know, the malefactor’s control over his body grows stronger with each passing night, and there’s a lot Alastor isn’t telling his dim-witted (but admittedly strong-willed) human host.

From #1 New York Times best-selling author Alexandra Bracken comes a tale of betrayal and revenge, of old hurts passed down from generation to generation. Can you ever fully right a wrong, ever truly escape your history? Or will Prosper and Alastor be doomed to repeat it?

Also how gorgeous but creepy is that book cover!!!

The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon

This book does sound interesting and it is also diverse as one of the main characters Natasha is being deported. I don’t remember what her nationality she is and it’s not in the synopsis but from memory I’m pretty sure she is from a nationality I haven’t read from the POV of before. The only thing that is putting me off this book is that it is so obviously going to be an insta love story which is something I CANNOT stand! So for that reason I will probably never read it.

Verdict: DELETE

Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

Well this book sounds really interesting! I read The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson last year as I received it in The YA Chronicles subscription box and really enjoyed it. I know this book is a romance and I really hope that it won’t involve insta love!

Verdict: KEEP

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

EverythingEverythingCover 7.11.08 pm

I have heard fairly mixed reviews about this book. There was one review I saw on Goodreads that said they don’t support the trope ‘love conquers all – including a life threatening illness’ and if that is the case of this book then I kinda don’t want to read it, I will though as I own the book and it’s only 300 pages.

Verdict: KEEP

November 9 by Colleen Hoover

So I only have this on my TBR as I have it on my iBooks app. It popped up one day as either 99c or free on iBooks so I grabbed it. This book does sound interesting, the synopsis is intriguing and I love the idea that one of the main characters is a writer. But this is also honestly sounding like those romance movies I strongly dislike, for example: The Notebook.. I don’t think I will ever read a Colleen Hoover book as I’m just not into contemporary romances.

Verdict: DELETE

Everything Leads To You by Nina LaCour

I have read You Know Me Well which was co-authored by Nina LaCour & David Levithan and I really enjoyed it! This book sounds like it will be just as good and it will be interesting to read a book only by Nina LaCour to see if I enjoy the writing of it as much as I did You Know Me Well. Also I am also all for diverse books and this also sounds interesting by the way the main character will be introduced to a new lifestyle of sorts.

Verdict: KEEP

Bright Smoke, Cold Fire by Rosamund Hodge

This book sounds very interesting. It is very obviously a Romeo and Juliet retelling, even using the same names by the sound of it. But the fantasy world around it is whats intriguing me most of all! I have read Romeo and Juliet, as I had to for school and I neither loved nor hated it, it was just kinda eh. So I’m hoping this will be a better version for me. But also there are a love of negative reviews for this book and that average rating on Goodreads is 3.3 so it sounds like a fair few people disliked it. I’m still interested though and want to try it for myself. Also the last part of the Goodreads synopsis is what really pulled me in:

“Both pairs will find friendship where they least expect it. Both will find that Viyara holds more secrets and dangers than anyone ever expected. And outside the walls, death is waiting. . .”

Verdict: KEEP

The Queen of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst

For some reason this cover just reminds me of LOTR. Anyway, first there is absolutely no mention of romance in the synopsis which I am loving! This book sounds like an action packed high fantasy adventure and I am so far all of that!

Verdict: KEEP

Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige

This sounds like an awesome take on a retelling of The Winter’s Tale! I haven’t read The Winter’s Tale I have just seen other people say that it is a retelling of it. I haven’t read Danielle Paige’s other series Dorothy Must Die, but it is on my TBR and I want to get to it soon! Basically everything in the synopsis sounds really interesting and like something I would enjoy! Lets hope I do.

Verdict: KEEP

P.S. I Like You by Kasie West

This just sounds like the typical ‘cute contemporary’ and I don’t really care for it. I don’t think I need to explain further than that.

Verdict: DELETE

Legend by Marie Lu

This sounds interesting. The world sounds very different and cool and that is what is drawing me in. Also a lot of people seem to love this series and it is one that I have wanted to read for ages! Marie Lu is just a very highly praised author and I want to jump on that bandwagon.

Verdict: KEEP

I also had another book on my TBR that I skipped over and that was The Kill Order which is the prequel to The Maze Runner. I read that series a couple years ago some time and I’m just not interested in reading a prequel to it so long after reading the series.

Top Ten Tuesday – Series That I Need To Start

Header Image (61)

Top Ten Tuesday is a monthly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and you can find all the info and upcoming prompts Here.

This week’s prompts is: Top Ten Series I’ve Been Meaning To Start But Haven’t (topic originally done March 2013) — anyone else have a mile long list of series to start like I do??

1. The Lunar Chronicles Series by Marissa Meyer

So I have been meaning to start this series for ages! I bought Cinder sometimes last year but still haven’t picked it up. I read Heartless, also by Marissa Meyer and also a retelling and didn’t enjoy it. It wasn’t horrible, but I just didn’t enjoy it, you can find my review for that review HERE. I will be reading Cinder in July as the Book of the Month for a Goodreads group YA Book Bloggers, feel free to join us if you are are YA book blogger haha!

2. Shades of Magic Series by V.E. Schwab

I honestly have no excuse as to why I haven’t started this series! I own the first book in the series but just haven’t picked it up yet! I really want to try some Victoria/V.E. Schwab as I have heard so many amazing things about basically all of her books! I will probably read the first book soon as I am on a book buying ban and I want to get my physical TBR down a tonne before buying anymore books, so I will read this soon.

3. Daughter of Smoke and Bone Series by Laini Taylor

I have read Strange the Dreamer and it is my favourite book so far this year! I wanted to read this series before reading Strange the Dreamer, but since reading it this series is a lot higher on my TBR!

4. Monsters of Verity Series by Victoria Schwab

So, another Victoria/V.E. Schwab series! Like I said before there is so many good comments about her books and that makes me want to read them! Also I have been told that The Savage Song has no romance.. If that is true, then that is awesome! I don’t know about Our Dark Duet as it only released a few days ago and I haven’t seen a tonner about it yet, but I do avoid reading reviews for books I haven’t read, so it may have been mentioned, but I just haven’t seen it!

5. Passenger Series by Alexandra Bracken

I am reading The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken right now and enjoying it so far! But even before starting The Darkest Minds this book was on my TBR! I also haven’t really read any books about time travel so that is really intriguing me!

6. Dorothy Must Die Series by Danielle Paige

So this was one of the first retellings I ever added to my TBR! And I still haven’t got to it yet!! It seems like there is a tonne of books when you look at the series page on Goodreads because there is 9 prequels to this series, 9!! I think that is what kinda throws me off because each of them are around 100-150 pages! So that is basically 2 full novels before the actual series! And I do want to read them in order as they are prequels. I do still want to read this series though!

7. Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series by Rick Riordan

So I have been meaning to read a Rick Riordan book in years! But I still haven’t and this one kinda includes Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Heroes of Olympus, The Trials of Apollo & Magnus Chase, The Kane Chronicles and the Gods of Asgard series. So basically all of Rick Riordans books haha! I definitely want to start a Rick Riordan book soon!

8. The Witchlands Series by Susan Dennard

So this is only the first 2 books as there is still 3 books to come out! Bloodwitch is the next one but it doesn’t have a cover yet. The world and magic system in this book sounds so interesting and everyone is talking about this book lately and I really want to get in on the hype!

9. The Gold Seer Trilogy by Rae Carson

For one thing these covers are gorgeous! The main reason this is on my TBR is that it is a Fantasy Historical Fiction book! That just sounds so intriguing to me as I’m pretty sure I haven’t read a fantasy historical fiction before, I might have, but I don’t think so! So this is really interesting to me and I’m keen

10. Frostblood Saga by Elly Blake

Again, these covers are gorgeous! This is actually a trilogy but Fireblood actually isn’t out until September and Nightblood isn’t out and doesn’t have a cover yet to use! This book was one of my highly anticipated from last year but I never got around to it! But I really want to get to it soon! It sounds amazing and its very highly praised!

Well that is all for today! I know I missed yesterdays Down the TBR Hole as I just literally forgot! So I will probably do it tomorrow or Thursday!

Cover Reveal – The Empress (The Diabolic #2)

Header Image (60)

So this is actually the first ‘cover reveal’ type post I have done, but I saw this cover and had to talk about it!

So last week S.J. Kincaid posted this cover reveal along with an excerpt for the sequel of The Diabolic, The Empress. HERE is the link to her post with the excerpt!

I don’t know how I feel about this cover as it doesn’t exactly match The Diabolic’s cover, but overall it’s a nice cover! The Raven (i think) breaking out of the dove is pretty cool!

Here is the cover for The Diabolic! They kinda are similar but not really.

I joined Litsy! @DuskAngelReads

Header Image (59)

So I saw a couple people on Instagram saying they joined Litsy and I was curious! So I joined and even though I have only had it for a little while and there isn’t as many accounts as there is say on Instagram I love it!

So seen as this App was completely new to me and I didn’t know it existed so I thought I would share it so you all know it exists too!

This is only an App, there isn’t a website for Litsy, besides THIS ONE that just gives access to where you can download the App and as far as I can tell this is only available for Apple and Google Play.

This app is the amazing love child of Bookstagram & Goodreads! So I’ll share some screenshots of some of the features!

So first this is what your profile will look like. At the top you can add a little bio and that can incorporate a website so that you can share your blogs! Then as I will show below you can add what book you are currently reading and it will show up under your bio!

The ‘litfluence’ everyone starts with 42 and when you get likes and comments I think it goes up? Like I said I don’t actually know and I haven’t had any interactions as yet to know what makes it go up. But when you click that number the below stats comes up! As I can tell the books you have read doesn’t make an effect on the number. But I think this stat page is pretty cool! knowing how many pages you have read is cool! I know it would be approx as it would depend on whether you read paperback or hardcover as they tend to be slightly different, but its still a cool idea!

So next you can search and add books that you want to read!

You can also add all the books you have read or just add books that you have read since starting the App. I will show below the meaning of the symbols on the left side.

So you can add 3 types of posts! A book review Which I will show below the ratings system and also this is only for short reviews. The character count is 451, I don’t know why 451 and not 450, but still. The next is a blurb which is just either if you want to say something or update about something. And then last is the quote, you can share quotes from your favourite books! Also you can add photos to any of these posts!

So when you are on a book profile you can read the synopsis and if you click the little image of the stack of books next to cover this will pop up and this is where you can mark your To Read, Reading & Have Read and also rate books! I love that they use a different type of rating system rather than just the stars! So Pick obviously means you love it, So-So well that one is self explanatory, Pan is dislike and Bail is really bad, but I think it might imply DNFing books, but not 100%, that’s just what I see. I rated them as 4-5 star ratings were Pick, 3.5 or 3 is So-so, 2.5 to 1.5 as Pan & Bail as 1 or DNF.

And here is what a Book review could look like, I used a pic that I took for Insta a while ago and wrote a mini review. It shows up what rating you used, as you can see I used the ‘Pick’ rating as I loved this book! And as you can see up the top under my name is the title of the book, when you write a review you choose the book from their system and then people can just click the name of the book up the top to see the book profile.

Btw the lightning bolt symbol is just the notification section.

So that all the info I know about the App! Please go and join and if you do or if you already have a profile then please go follow me! I will follow back all my blog followers without doubt haha!

I love that this is a App strictly for the bookish community! It’s all ours!

Tag Sunday – The College Freshman Book Tag

Header Image (58)

So I actually didn’t go to College, for one one thing Australia has more University’s than Colleges, I guess you could consider them the same thing? But just saying. Also I did my Diploma online, so I never had the actual Uni experience. I was tagged by the creators of this tag Dawlyn & Krista @Little Blind Book Finds! Be sure to go and check their blog out!

1. Give credit to the creator of the tag!
2. Answer the questions to the best of your ability! You don’t have to be in college or have gone to college to answer these!
3. Tag three people to complete the tag.

More Tag Questions (9)

Roommates can be a hit or miss experience freshman year, especially when you don’t get the opportunity to pick who you room with. Name a character you’d love to be roommates with and one you’d hate to be roommates with.

My first thought for someone I would love to be roommates with was Rose from Vampire Academy. And I don’t really know about someone I would hate to be roommates with, maybe Nesta from the ACOTAR series she is just always so serious, moody and acts like she has no emotion, which would start to piss me off after a while as i’m the chatty, laughing and sarcastic person and that just wouldn’t work out.

More Tag Questions (10)

Before your freshman year officially begins, you typically go to an orientation to familiarize yourself with the campus. Orientation can be both exciting and scary as you’re experiencing something new. Name a book that you read to experience a new genre, or to familiarize yourself with a topic you knew nothing about. Did you like the book? What did you learn from it?

Well I read Maus by Art Spiegelman and it was my first Graphic Novel. I wanted to try and read a Graphic Novel and seen as I love Historical Fiction I decided to choose a Historical Fiction Graphic Novel and really loved it! It was so interesting.

More Tag Questions (11)

It is normal to experience homesickness at some point after moving away from home for the first time. Name a book from your childhood that you love so much that you sometimes miss, and may even find yourself rereading it often.

I honestly didn’t read that much as a kid, so I have no answer for this.

More Tag Questions (12)

Choosing a major is something every college student has to do at some point, but many students choose their freshman year. Hopefully your major is something you are passionate about. Name a book that you have read about a topic you are passionate about, or a character from a book that shares a similar passion as you.

I haven’t read a book about a topic I am really passionate about. Not really anyway, I have read LGBT books, which I guess is a topic I’m ‘passionate’ about being biseuxal myself. However none of the LGBT+ books I have read have been about the discrimination side of it or about the legalisation (as in Aus same sex marriage is still not legal).

More Tag Questions (13)

Joining different clubs and groups can often be an exciting thing to jump into as a freshman for some, and nerve-wracking for others. Name a popular book or book series that you didn’t think you’d enjoy, but ended up loving.

I don’t generally read books that I don’t think I will like, so its usually the other way around.

More Tag Questions (14)

As a college freshman and a college student in general, all-nighters are pretty common. Name one book that was so good, you stayed up all night reading it.

Well not all night, but later than usual, the last one was Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

More Tag Questions (15)

Speaking of those all-nighters, they usually have something to do with that assignment you put off until the last minute. Name a popular book or book series that you put off reading for way too long.

There is still heaps of popular series I need to get to. I would have to say Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo, I haven’t finished the series but I have finally started it.

More Tag Questions (16)

You may or may not have experienced a hangover… or 10 during your freshman year in college. Name a book that left you with a book hangover after you finished it.

I am yet to have a book put me in a legitimate book hangover. I always write my book reviews straight after finishing a book, and I find that by writing my review I get everything out and then I’m ready to move on.

More Tag Questions (17)

Freshman year, you usually learn what it means to be a broke college student. Name a book that you remember buying even though you were tight on cash, because you just had to have it.

The 20th Anniversary Gryffindor editions (paperback & Hardcover) of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. I couldn’t pass on that.

More Tag Questions (18)

General ed courses are typically all you take freshman year, and English is usually one of them. (Depending on the prof that could be a good thing 😉 ) Name a required reading book that you loved. (it can be middle/high school or college)

In High School I read Tomorrow When the War Began and really enjoyed it!

More Tag Questions (19)

Part of being a broke college student is trying to find the cheapest way to buy a textbook. To make it worse, some freshman gen ed courses end up having no use for the book at all. Name a book that you spent money on and ended up not liking.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Find my review HERE if you want to know more!

More Tag Questions (20)

All professors have office hours, and often times students don’t take advantage of them. Advice for freshman: go to office hours! It is a good idea to get to know your professors. Making connections with them can lead to great tips on assignments, internship opportunities, and job connections. Name a book (autobiography or biography) that you read to get to know more about someone you are interested in.

More Tag Questions (22)

There’s always that one professor that no one likes, especially in freshman gen ed courses. Name a villain or any character you disliked, that you would hate to have as a professor.

Umbridge! I know she was a teacher in HP, but would still hate it!

More Tag Questions (23)

Sometimes It gets to the midpoint of the semester and you can’t take any more of a particular class, and decide to drop it. Name a book or author you thought you’d enjoy reading but ended up not liking.

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

More Tag Questions (24)

I learned so many life lessons my freshman year of college. The experience made me learn so much about myself that I didn’t realize. Name a book that has made you reflect on life.

Honestly none really.

Larger Heading titles

Because I’ll be doing them every Sunday, I am only going to tag 2 people in each so I’m not tagging the same people all the time! So each week I will tag my latest 2 followers! These will also be only followers that I follow back as well as there is no point in tagging someone I don’t follow.
