Whatever you’ve heard about Caraval, it doesn’t compare to the reality. It’s more than just a game or a performance. It’s the closest you’ll ever find to magic in this world . . .

Welcome, welcome to Caraval―Stephanie Garber’s sweeping tale of two sisters who escape their ruthless father when they enter the dangerous intrigue of a legendary game.

Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.

Well first off I don’t own the edition shown above, I own the UK Hardcover but I am yet to find a image of it’s cover online that isn’t a tiny image and can’t be expanded without going blurry! So I will enter a photo from my Instagram below that shows it in part of my April Haul image!

I love how there was 4 different designs on the Hardcovers that you could get, I got the circus tent, but there was also the top hat, a dress and a clock! I really wanted the clock but as I ordered online I couldn’t really pick which one I received, so I had to live with the one I got haha.

I love the design on the front cover, it’s simple but also nice. I also like that the spine is half black and half white as the front cover it black and the back is white!

I really enjoyed the writing, it was simple and easy and quick to read. The writing drew me in and made me not want to put the book down. At the end of nearly every chapter there was something there that just made you want to know what was coming next! I like how the letters were added into the book and looked like actual letters, not just part of the book. And I also like that each person’s handwriting on the letters was so different! I love that they added a map of Caraval! I don’t full understand where these balconies were, because in the book it says they were all around but on the map there is buildings on the edge of the map but not all of those buildings had balconies.

The plot was interesting, but also very different and weird! The world was just so curious and odd and I loved exploring it with the characters! The plot basically all twists and turns and alot of the time I thought I had it figured out what was going on and then the next chapter I realised I was completely wrong! I liked how it ended, it was really out there and unexpected especially the bit of info we learn at the end from a certain character I did not see coming. And also that kinda cliffhanger they left us on with that little bit of info in the last letter! That definitely made me want to know what happened next and what deal had been struck up!

Okay so there is only really 1 character that we really get to know and that is our main character Scarlett, I enjoyed her character more towards the end when she started growing and opening up to new possibilities a bit! A lot of the other characters are just such mysteries still! Even Tella is still a bit of a mystery however a little bit is revealed towards the end about what she is actually like and the things that she would do and I do like her character, but I need to know more! I can’t really talk about any others as it would either ruin the mystery of the book or the characters themselves are still a mystery to me.

Overall I thought this book was fun, inventive and interesting! The only reason it didn’t get a 5 star for me was that even though it was an amazing book it didn’t completely blow my socks off. Still a new love though!

Let me know if you have read this and what you thought?!

Also what are you reading atm?!

Please no spoilers without warning in the comments, don’t want to ruin anyone elses reading experience!!

    1. We all need a little more weird in our lives 😂
And same here! I was disappointed to see that there wasn’t even a title when I went on and checked it out before writing the review! But hopefully soon!

  1. I read Caraval just last month and I love it so so much! The world is amazing and the mystery is so well written. There are so many twists in the story that totally caught me off guard. Like I kept doubting all the characters while I was reading the novel. I didn’t know whether their feelings are genuine or they are just acting their role. So, yep, totally agree with your review on Caraval. 😀 I’m currently reading The Night Circus. Can’t get enough of the circus madness after reading Caraval. XD

    1. I agree! Never trusting any character in this book the whole time basically! And honestly if I owned a copy of The Night Circus I would be too! Unfortunately I don’t have it and will have to wait to fill my need for my circus/carnival type books! 😩

      1. I want to trust some of the characters so badly but I somehow knew that I can’t. It was a rollercoaster ride! 😦 I just went online and ordered The Night Circus straight after I finished Caraval. LOL! The need to read circus books was just so bad. XD

      2. So true about the characters!
And I would, but I’m being good. I have put myself on a book buying ban and I want to stay with it. So not buying it just yet!
Only exception for that ban was the new house editions of HP and the philosophers stone. 😍 couldn’t resist them!

      3. Lol, yep stick with the ban! I’m thinking of getting a kindle soon just to stop my book buying habits. :> Wow, i just googled the cover for the house edition of HP and it is stunning. :O

      4. I wish I could use kindle but I get bad headaches when reading on my phone/iPad for too long. 😫

And they are! And they have extra info in them about each of the houses!! Keen to actually get mine in the mail to see what the extra info is!

      5. I see… 😦 That is really cool. I love the idea of waiting for your book to arrive via mail. It is like I will get really happy when the mail is finally here. I hope that your book will arrive in your mail soon! 😀

  2. Currently reading this. I’ve heard good things but honestly, I read just the first couple of chapters and Tella has me feeling bleh about picking it up again xD I just didn’t like the first time we get to meet her she just seems… ready to trample whoever she has to in order to get what she wants. Good review though c: I’ll try to push through and hopefully it gets better (or at least less Tella lol)

    1. You will understand Tellas actions more in the end, I promise! But yeah I agree with you at the start I kinda just wanted to knock her out and move on. 😂😂 but honestly Scarlett kinda annoyed me too at the beginning haha.
