Goodreads Synopsis:

A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.

Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

Wow, another favourite! There has been so many amazing books that I read this year!

Writing:

The writing was amazing, it was very engaging and never left me confused. I can’t stand it when you have to read something 3 times over to figure out what the hell is going on, especially in action scenes, that wasn’t the case in this book. The writing was beautiful and very fast paced.

I also like maps! Which isn’t exactly writing, but it’s part of the physical book. So I love it, it has a map in the front. Maps just make it so much easier to figure out where things are placed in a fantasy world, especially when I am shit at remembering whether they said this place was North, West, South or East of wherever and trying to figure out where things would kinda be placed. I also like following where the characters are travelling to and from on a map. That might just be me though haha 😳.

Plot:

The plot was really goos and so action packed. Yes there was some non-action packed parts, but that was fine, there needs to be a happy medium in books.. Too much action just gets kinda boring, to me anyway, there is going to be times when not much is going on and it’s great to show that too. That kinda went off on a bit of a tangent, but oh well. Anyway, the plot was well done, it wasn’t predictable and had twists and turns to keep me interested right until the end.

Characters:

I loved the characters, all of them really, well except Angra… But that’s because he is a d*ck. But I still loved him as a character in this book, but not as a person.. That makes sense, right? Meira was, yes a typical feisty strong female character, but that is something I will never get sick of in books. Mather, you kinda loved him and wanted to slap him sometimes, but he is still amazing, just dude, mixed signals! Theron is an amazing character, but his dad, Noam… Hmmm kind of a, yeah I’m not saying anymore… No spoilers here! Sir (William), at the start I was like just let her go and do what she wants, but now I understand why he was protective… Again, No Spoilers!

I could sit here all day saying each one of the other characters are amazing too, but quite frankly that would take too much time and I have shit to do haha.

Overall:

I loved it. It’s another new favourite! I was planning on buying the next two books when I was away last Friday, but the Bookshop I went to (QBD) didn’t have them and there was a signing going on for some Iron Man book or some shit and there was just people everywhere because of that and it’s school holidays and everyone is Christmas shopping and I just wanted to get out of there! So I will be purchasing the other books on either iBooks or Scribd today and starting the next one tonight! I’ll buy physical copies from the Book Depository soon.

Let me know your thoughts!

* I have since changed this review from a 5 star rating to a 4 and a half. I enjoyed Frost Like Night even more than this one, so it is a 5 star, this one is a and a half and Ice Like Fire is a 4 star book.*

  1. I was hoping this book would be free on Kindle Unlimited, but of course it wasn’t (*cries*). The synopsis was extremely interesting to me and the raving reviews didn’t help me to stop thinking about it. Then I read your review….annnnnnd the urge to read this came back in full force. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Having said that, I have no choice now, it has to be purchased. Great review.
