December 2016 TBR

Well, this is my TBR for December. I am participating in a ReadAThon in December, so those books will be on here as well!

Already Started Reading and will finish in December:

Tales of the Peculiar by Ransom Riggs

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

I only have about 30 pages of Tales of the Peculiar left and I am also about half way through The Book Thief. I hope to finish it tomorrow as I am reading it as part of a ReadAThon that finishes on the 1st and I have another starting on the 2nd, so I want to get this finished!

First is the books that I will be reading for the ReadAThon, I am reading 4 books, even though I am meant to read 5 books.

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Now, for what else I plan to read after the ReadAThon, if I get those finished!

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir

I am going to leave An Ember in the Ashes until last in the ReadAThon so that I can read A Torch Against the Night straight after it if I enjoy An Ember in the Ashes.

Well, that’s it! Let me know if you have read any of these and your thoughts!

This is a Science Fiction Series that also has Dystopian vibes. This book is amazing and is one of my new favourites! Rebel of the Sands is a Fantasy novel! It is also the first book in a series, with the next book Traitor to the Throne is set to release in February next year! This is another new favourite and I can’t wait for the next book to come out!

And so she is taken in her sister’s place, and she believes death will soon follow. Lo-Melkhiin’s court is a dangerous palace filled with pretty things: intricate statues with wretched eyes, exquisite threads to weave the most beautiful garments. She sees everything as if for the last time. But the first sun rises and sets, and she is not dead. Night after night, Lo-Melkhiin comes to her and listens to the stories she tells, and day after day she is awoken by the sunrise. Exploring the palace, she begins to unlock years of fear that have tormented and silenced a kingdom. Lo-Melkhiin was not always a cruel ruler. Something went wrong.

Far away, in their village, her sister is mourning. Through her pain, she calls upon the desert winds, conjuring a subtle unseen magic, and something besides death stirs the air.

Back at the palace, the words she speaks to Lo-Melkhiin every night are given a strange life of their own. Little things, at first: a dress from home, a vision of her sister. 2017 Beat the Backlist | Reading Challenge

This is a challenge that aims at you getting rid of books that have been sitting in your TBR pile! This challenge was created by Austine @ Novel Knight. Go check out her announcement post to check out the guidelines and to sign up.

The challenge runs from the 1st of January till the 31st of December 2017. The aim is to get rid of books on your TBR pile. The only other guideline is the books can’t have been released in 2017.

Along with this challenge, she is also running a Hogwarts House Cup Mini Challenge! Again check out her post on details for that and for sign up for that is under the sign up for the Beat the Backlist challenge.

For the challenge I am setting myself a goal of 20 books.

This will probably change between now and 2017, but these are just some of the books I either have physical copies or iBooks of.

It’s possible that I may read a couple of these before the end of the year though. I have stopped buying books as I quit my job and am not currently working and also my bookcase is FULL and I can’t afford one ATM, let alone how much it would cost to either drive and pick one up or get it shipped to here.

I am also choosing to help out my Hogwarts House to win the House Cup! I’m a proud Gryffindor!

‘Win the House Cup’ banner and image above on right are both made by Novel Knight and the image above on left is a screencapture of my Pottermore profile!

Are you participating in this awesome reading challenge in 2017?! Let me know!

Gemina (The Illuminae Files #2) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – Spoiler Free Review

Title: Gemina
Author: Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
Series Name: The Illuminae Files
Genre: YA, Science Fiction, Dystopian
Publication Date: 18th October, 2016
Publishers: Allen & Unwin
Pages: 659
5 Star

Goodreads Synopsis:

The highly anticipated sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller that critics are calling “out-of-this-world awesome.”

Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna’s social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed.

The sci-fi saga that began with the breakout bestseller Illuminae continues on board the Jump Station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of the BeiTech assault.

Hanna is the station captain’s pampered daughter; Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy’s most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.

When an elite BeiTech strike team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station’s wormhole means the space-time continuum might be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren’t just fighting for their own survival; the fate of everyone on the Hypatia—and possibly the known universe—is in their hands.

But relax. They’ve totally got this. They hope.

Once again told through a compelling dossier of emails, IMs, classified files, transcripts, and schematics, Gemina raises the stakes of the Illuminae Files, hurling readers into an enthralling new story that will leave them breathless.

Have you read Gemina?! What did you think? (and as usual, no spoilers people!)

So, I was going to read this anyway obviously because I loved Illuminae, but I am going to say that I read this for the Tome Topple ReadAThon as it is over 500 pages!

I love the reading experience that book Illuminae and Gemina gives you. It’s great to take a break from reading constant passages of writing all the time. I absolutely loved the use of a “fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more” (quote taken from the Goodreads Synopsis). It’s an amazing way to read!

Again, an amazing plot! And seriously, I need the next book right now!

I loved that we got to meet new characters and also continue on with some of the characters from Illuminae too!
Some of them you want to stab and some you just want to hug.
Our two main characters Hannah & Niklas are awesome characters and I’m glad that we not only get a Badass female character, but also a badass male character.. Which I feels doesn’t happen as much as it should!

I loved this book just as much as Illuminae! It’s amazing and would recommend to anyone that likes Dystopians or Science Fiction. It’s amazing!

Shadow of War by Michael Ridpath

Genre: Historical Fiction

Goodreads Synopsis

October, 1939: War has been declared, but until the armies massed on either side of the French/German border engage, all is quiet on the Western Front.

But just because its quiet doesn’t mean that it’s not deadly.

There are those who believe the war no one wants to fight should be brought to a swift conclusion, even if it means treachery.

A year ago, Conrad de Lancey came within seconds of assassinating Hitler. Now the British Secret Service want him to go back into Europe and make contact with a group of German officers they believe are plotting a coup.

But this is the Shadow War. And the shadows are multiplying. And it’s not only disaffected Germans who are prepared to betray their country to save it…

As I Descended by Robin Talley

Genre: Retellings/GBLT/Fantasy/YA

Goodreads Synopsis

Maria Lyon and Lily Boiten are their school’s ultimate power couple—even if no one knows it but them.

Only one thing stands between them and their perfect future: campus superstar Delilah Dufrey.

Golden child Delilah is a legend at the exclusive Acheron Academy, and the presumptive winner of the distinguished Cawdor Kingsley Prize. She runs the school, and if she chose, she could blow up Maria and Lily’s whole world with a pointed look, or a carefully placed word.

But what Delilah doesn’t know is that Lily and Maria are willing to do anything—absolutely anything—to make their dreams come true. And the first step is unseating Delilah for the Kingsley Prize. The full scholarship, awarded to Maria, will lock in her attendance at Stanford―and four more years in a shared dorm room with Lily.

Maria and Lily will stop at nothing to ensure their victory—including harnessing the dark power long rumored to be present on the former plantation that houses their school.

But when feuds turn to fatalities, and madness begins to blur the distinction between what’s real and what is imagined, the girls must decide where they draw the line.

From acclaimed author Robin Talley comes a Shakespeare-inspired story of revenge and redemption, where fair is foul, and foul is fair.

Cruel Beauty by Rosamund HodgeCruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

Genre: Fantasy/YA/Retelling

Goodreads Synopsis

Graceling meets Beauty and the Beast in this sweeping fantasy about one girl’s journey to fulfill her destiny and the monster who gets in her way-by stealing her heart.

Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.

Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom-all because of a foolish bargain struck by her father. And since birth, she has been in training to kill him.

With no choice but to fulfill her duty, Nyx resents her family for never trying to save her and hates herself for wanting to escape her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, Nyx abandons everything she’s ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, destroy his enchanted castle, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.

But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle—a shifting maze of magical rooms—enthralls her.

As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex’s secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. Even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, how can she refuse her duty to kill him? With time running out, Nyx must decide what is more important: the future of her kingdom, or the man she was never supposed to love.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

Genre: Fantasy/YA/Horror

Goodreads Synopsis

Coraline’s often wondered what’s behind the locked door in the drawing room. It reveals only a brick wall when she finally opens it, but when she tries again later, a passageway mysteriously appears. Coraline is surprised to find a flat decorated exactly like her own, but strangely different. And when she finds her “other” parents in this alternate world, they are much more interesting despite their creepy black button eyes. When they make it clear, however, that they want to make her theirs forever, Coraline begins a nightmarish game to rescue her real parents and three children imprisoned in a mirror. With only a bored-through stone and an aloof cat to help, Coralineconfronts this harrowing task of escaping these monstrous creatures.

Gaiman has delivered a wonderfully chilling novel, subtle yet intense on many levels. The line between pleasant and horrible is often blurred until what’s what becomes suddenly clear, and like Coraline, we resist leaving this strange world until we’re hooked. Unnerving drawings also cast a dark shadow over the book’s eerie atmosphere, which is only heightened by simple, hair-raising text. Coraline is otherworldly storytelling at its best.

The Kendra Chronicles by Alex Finn

Genre: Fantasy/Retelling/YA

Consists of:

Goodreads Synopsis for Beastly

I am a beast.

A beast. Not quite wolf or bear, gorilla or dog but a horrible new creature who walks upright—a creature with fangs and claws and hair springing from every pore. I am a monster.

You think I’m talking fairy tales? No way. The place is New York City. The time is now. It’s no deformity, no disease. And I’ll stay this way forever—ruined—unless I can break the spell.

Yes, the spell, the one the witch in my English class cast on me. Why did she turn me into a beast who hides by day and prowls by night? I’ll tell you. I’ll tell you how I used to be Kyle Kingsbury, the guy you wished you were, with money, perfect looks, and the perfect life. And then, I’ll tell you how I became perfectly . . . beastly.

Fairytales Retellings Series by Jackson Pearce

Genre: YA/Fantasy/Retellings

I don’t know why they didn’t continue on with the style of covers they used in the first 2. They are so much nicer than the last two.

Apparently, every book is a completely different story and can be read in any order. So I will put the Synopsis for each.

Consists of:

Sister’s Red

Red Riding Hood Retelling

Goodreads Synopsis

Scarlett March lives to hunt the Fenris — the werewolves that took her eye when she was defending her sister Rosie from a brutal attack. Armed with a razor-sharp hatchet and blood-red cloak, Scarlett is an expert at luring and slaying the wolves. She’s determined to protect other young girls from a grisly death, and her raging heart will not rest until every single wolf is dead.

Rosie March once felt her bond with her sister was unbreakable. Owing Scarlett her life, Rosie hunts ferociously alongside her. But even as more girls’ bodies pile up in the city and the Fenris seem to be gaining power, Rosie dreams of a life beyond the wolves. She finds herself drawn to Silas, a young woodsman who is deadly with an ax and Scarlett’s only friend — but does loving him mean betraying her sister and all that they’ve worked for?

Hansel and Gretel Retelling

Goodreads Synopsis

As a child, Gretchen’s twin sister was taken by a witch in the woods. Ever since, Gretchen and her brother, Ansel, have felt the long branches of the witch’s forest threatening to make them disappear, too.

Years later, when their stepmother casts Gretchen and Ansel out, they find themselves in sleepy Live Oak, South Carolina. They’re invited to stay with Sophia Kelly, a beautiful candy maker who molds sugary magic: coveted treats that create confidence, bravery, and passion.

Life seems idyllic and Gretchen and Ansel gradually forget their haunted past — until Gretchen meets handsome local outcast Samuel. He tells her the witch isn’t gone — it’s lurking in the forest, preying on girls every year after Live Oak’s infamous chocolate festival, and looking to make Gretchen its next victim. Gretchen is determined to stop running and start fighting back. Yet the further she investigates the mystery of what the witch is and how it chooses its victims, the more she wonders who the real monster is.

Gretchen is certain of only one thing: a monster is coming, and it will never go away hungry.

The Little Mermaid Retelling

Goodreads Synopsis

Celia Reynolds is the youngest in a set of triplets and the one with the least valuable power. Anne can see the future, and Jane can see the present, but all Celia can see is the past. And the past seems so insignificant — until Celia meets Lo.

Lo doesn’t know who she is. Or who she was. Once a human, she is now almost entirely a creature of the sea — a nymph, an ocean girl, a mermaid — all terms too pretty for the soulless monster she knows she’s becoming. Lo clings to shreds of her former self, fighting to remember her past, even as she’s tempted to embrace her dark immortality.

When a handsome boy named Jude falls off a pier and into the ocean, Celia and Lo work together to rescue him from the waves. The two form a friendship, but soon they find themselves competing for Jude’s affection. Lo wants more than that, though. According to the ocean girls, there’s only one way for Lo to earn back her humanity. She must persuade a mortal to love her . . . and steal his soul.

Cold Spell

The Snow Queen Retelling

Anyone else see the similarity between this book and Stealing Snow? Both Snow Queen Retellings and a very similar covers? Cold Spell was published in 2013 and Stealing Snow in 2016?? “Curious, Very Curious.”

Goodreads Synopsis

Kai and Ginny grew up together–best friends since they could toddle around their building’s rooftop rose garden. Now they’re seventeen, and their relationship has developed into something sweeter, complete with stolen kisses and plans to someday run away together.

But one night, Kai disappears with a mysterious stranger named Mora–a beautiful girl with a dark past and a heart of ice. Refusing to be cast aside, Ginny goes after them and is thrust into a world she never imagined, one filled with monsters and thieves and the idea that love is not enough.

If Ginny and Kai survive the journey, will she still be the girl he loved–and moreover, will she still be the girl who loved him?

Well, that’s it for this week! Let me know if you have read any of these books and your thoughts?! Please, no spoilers!

HELP ME + #HPWeekendAThon TBR

Would you look at that another ReadAThon! This ReadAThon was created by 2 BookTubers! Chelsea @ Chelseadollingreads and April @ Aprilius Maximus. I discovered this ReadAThon through Bex @ BexnBookx go and check out her TBR! 😀

This ReadAThon runs for 4 days: 12:00am on Friday the 2nd of December to 11:59pm on Monday the 5th of December in your time zone! There are 5 challenges that reach relate to a Harry Potter character!

Because I have recently quit my job and I don’t want to be spending extra money I am going to try and fit books that I already own into each of these categories!

The Challenges and my TBR

Challenge 1

Harry:  read a book that BookTube has deemed the ‘Chosen One’ (a hyped book)

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

I’m pretty sure ou can consider this book to have a lot of hype, if not the book for Challenge 2 would also go in this category, but I am going to attempt to read 5 books.. But if that doesn’t happen I will just try and fit the books I do read into the categories! We will see how many I get through!

I am also going to try and read this book last as I have a copy of A Torch Against the Night as well. So, if I read this last I will read A Torch Against the Night straight afterward because I really do hate reading one book in the series and leaving it a couple months to read the next!

Challenge 2

Hermione: Read a book that has a badass female character

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Well, I googled ‘books with badass female characters’ and this was the first book on the list I saw and I happen to already have a copy of this! So that is why I chose it!

This is also the book that could fit in challenge 1. I discovered this book when I started watching BookTube as so many people were talking about it because the next book in the series had come out!

I have never read a fairytale retelling so this will be an interesting read!

Challenge 3

Ron: Read a red or orange book

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

I recently received this book in The YA Chronicles subscription box and even though the main colour on the cover is black, I’m still going to use this! Considering I have never read a fairytale retelling, like I said before I am going to be read 2 in this ReadAThon. I have also never read anything by Marissa Meyer and I am reading 2 in this ReadAThon.. So I hope I like her writing! This book could also go under the Hyped book challenge seen as people have been talking about this for months coming up to its release!

Challenge 4

Dumbledore: Read a book that features LGBTQIA+ Characters

Okay, so here is where I need help! As I said above I don’t want to purchase any books for this ReadAThon. I don’t have any books that are well known for their LGBTQIA Characters. So I need help..

I will put a list of all the physical books on my TBR and also the iBooks that I have and if you know that any of these have LGBTQIA characters please let me know!

A lot of the iBooks I have, I’ve got no idea what they are because a mate gave me copies or they were free downloads and sounded interesting at the time! And checking them on Goodreads most of the time doesn’t help as most people just label books as Diverse and Diverse means more than just LGBTQIA.

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them by J.K. Rowling

So, obviously, I am going with the book by a favourite author part! I love the Harry Potter series and J.K. Rowling! So, I am so keen to get to this book and dive back into the Wizarding World! And guess what guys?! Finally, a book and movie that are exactly the same! HAHA. Anyway. I will hopefully be going to see the movie during the weekend that this ReadAThon is on! It comes out in the cinema in the next town on the 1st, so I will be straight there that weekend haha.

Well, that’s my TBR! Please help me find a book that I can read for challenge 4. If I can’t find something I’m just going to skip that Challenge and if I get time I will just read a random book, so I have 5.
